Last night I stayed up late watching "Shall We Dance?" (2004) with Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez and Susuan Sheredan. Although I hadn't heard of it before, I thought it was a very nice film with many rich moments. I also like the way the characters were written.

Now I'm wondering what movies you have thought were good even if they weren't particularly blockbusters? And my second question is, what to you makes a "good" movie?

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

Merme, I can't sit still long enough to watch a movie...well there are two exceptions. "Shawshank Redemption" and "Steel Magnolias", I could watch those two forever....

I love old movies that are set in the country, sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 sittings to watch the whole movie lol I think I'm a 'happy ever after' girl at heart.

Interesting question, Merme, as Amy and I just finished watching what I must consider one of the MOST DEPRESSING movies I have ever seen in my whole life! Don borrowed a HUGE box of DVDs from a friend so he'd have something to do while he recuperates from his throat surgery. Amy and I went through it today and watched...

Pieces of April starring Katie Holmes.

While it was definitely a downer, I do have to say that in light of the "stuff" that has been going on here at home, it did have a pretty powerful message to me. I don't think Amy got the same message, but it certainly was food for thought.

Now... if I could only find an uplifting movie in that box of 100 DVDS!!!!!!!
Most of what is in there doesn't really interest Don nor I - can you believe that?!?

lynne, i can believe that. i think the best movies i have watched in the last few years have been oldies by todays standards. my all time favorites are "on golden pond" with henry fonda, katherine hepburn, and jane fonda, i love the line where katherine hepburn calls henry fonda an old fool. and the movie ghost. pearl harbor was good, it was probably the most recent movie i've watched and liked.

JIffy ~ I also enjoyed On Golden Pond as well as Ghost. I haven't seen Pearl Harbor though I've heard the soundtrack many times.

Lynne ~ I've never heard of Pieces of April but from your desription it doesn't sound like what I'd be interested in watching.

Tamara ~ I can never just sit still and watch a movie. I always do something else while viewing it. That's one reason I never go to the movies because then I'm forced to just sit there and watch.

On Golden Pond is a great movie. We have it taped and rewatched it this spring as we went to Squam Lake and took the tour around the lake in a platoon boat. The guide pointed out all the places where they filmed the movie. A very nice place to vacation. One island is owned by a Christian group and they hold their services on it all summer. They have a big cross they built on the island. It was very interesting. When I got home I had to watch the movie again lol

the older movies are the best thumbup

Me too Tamara, me too!!!! I can't do the crowds, and when the lights go down I get a little panicky for a second.....

We just rent DVD's here....

I'm not a huge movie person though to be honest. I tend to stick to romantic comedies, and comedies....nice light hearted stuff.

I must tell you all though.....one movie I really shockingly liked when I first watched it was Aliens VS Predator....

I watched it with Mark when it came out on DVD a long time ago and I was really into it. Surprised me. lol

Last movie I went to see in the theater was the first of the new Star Wars movies....that's been a LONG time ago now. I just like being able to go to the bathroom and not miss anything, and not having to pay $8 to get in and then shell out another $10 for popcorn and a drink. $3.50 rents me a new release downtown!

In keeping with the season, I LOVE: "It's a Wonderful life".
I like a movie that is just a good movie that will keep my interst & NOT have a bunch of blood , killing or violence. having said that--I like to watch a good mystery--just as long as I do not have to actually SEE the victum die nor see him/her at all--I just like to stretch my brain & see if I can figure out the "who done it" part.

Man on Fire with Denzel Washington is a great movie as is American Gangster with Denzel. American Gangster is based on a true story - very interesting.

We like going to the movie.

Little Miss Sunshine and Death at a Funeral are great if you come from a disfunctional family. I laughed myself silly.

Another old movie I watch everytime it comes on TV is Moon Struck with Nicholas Cage and Cher (again disfunctional family), and oh yeah, Raising Arizona with Nicholas Cage.

Oh man! We hardly EVER watch movies!! I can't even tell you how long it has been since we rented a movie!! I don't even remember what that would have been. We watch a lot of Tristen's movies which are all kids movies. lol The only movies that I ever really watch are on Lifetime. lol I like to watch that on Sunday afternoons. They have good movies. But...it is not that I don't like to watch movies because there are plenty that I would like to see but when we are home Tristen is around so we can't watch them and by the time he goes to bed both of us would fall asleep watching any movie that we would rent so we just don't do it. I am thinking that this weekend might be a good time to rent some though. It is a long weekend and Tristen will be at grandma and grandpa's. We have dish so we usually just rent off of there. That way we don't have to worry about returning the movies because I am always late to return them. lol I will have to check to see what is on the dish!!

I LOVED, "The Illusionist" and "National Treasure". I also liked an animated movie from the 1970's, "Watership Down", about a group of rabbits in England searching for a new home after one of the mystics in their group sees the destruction of their old one.

National treasure 2 is a sequel to the first one.
Jonni really wants to go out and watch Sweeney Todd. She called it Tweeney Sodd.

We thought we wanted to see Tweeney Sodd too, love Johnny Depp, until we realized it's a musical.

Jonni, 16, loves Johnny Depp. That amuses me a lot because my oldest daughter, 35, used to love Johnny Depp also when she was a teen. Back then he was on 21 Jump Street.

Johnny Depp was in a band as a teen. I don't think he has a trained voice but I don't think the musical gives you a headache either.

My all time favorite movie is Pretty Woman. Typical Cinderella story, ya know? I also loved the first National Treasure and we will probably go to see the second one in a few weeks.....we have coupons for free movies and they can be used after a movie has been out for 2 weeks.

We just went to see I Am Legend. Will Smith did really really well in that movie. Sheri, the movie is based on the book "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson.....which is a pretty short read. I thought the movie was good, but I thought the last 5-10 minutes of the movie felt rushed. I'm going to have to read the book to see how it ends there....if it ends just as quickly, then I'll probably be happy with the movie. LOL The book is basically a vampire novel which I didn't realize until I did some research on it.

I cannot believe that they are making another Indian Jones movie....another Batman movie.....AND another Rambo movie! My goodness.....Indiana Jones and Rambo??? These actors must have blown through all of their money because they are really too old for these roles now!

I love that movie too. I also have a book that was written after the movie. It was so cool because it was from ET's point of view and how he had to lower his intellect so much to communicate with humans.

I've liked most of the Cohen brother's movies. I'm kind of picky about movies, most of them just bore us. I don't much like sappy movies, I like action/thriller movies, and movies that have a message. I was even on the news once for going to see a movie that was considered very controversial, but I won't talk about that movie here. My favorites are the Matrix movies, V for Vendetta was awesome, and Gangs of New York was great too. We just watched Flight Plan last night and that was better than I expected it to be. And I'm a HUGE Jonny Depp fan. He's the main reason I enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The only musical I've seen him in was Cry Baby and I thought he did all right.

My sister is a huge Johnny Depp fan, me--not so much. But she has all his movies.

I LOVE the Matrix movies....they are one of my all time favorites. I know some people just don't get them, but I thought the entire concept was absolutely fantastic. I think if I ever ran into Keanu Reeves I'd have a hard time not bowing down and saying, You're the One!!!! haha

And you're right Cheryl, Gangs of New York was good too!
