There's a place I've been wanting to go for about 15 years; the name itself first turned up in a novel I read where the author had used the name of Balls Falls as being his home town.

It is actually a conservation area located near St. Catharines, Ontario.

We set out early - around 8:30 Sunday morning.

By 9:30 we were having breakfast at Stop 50 in Hamilton.

Then we set out for Balls! We were there in about 3/4 of an hour.

There are more pictures, of course, but I'll be setting them up during the week on our web pages.

It took a wee bit of walking around which wasn't difficult for Jeff, but it was for me - I'm still trying to get my winter bones warmed up. But I did manage to hobble around and it was worth it.

.............

Seeing as how we were only 1/2 hour away, and it was only around 1 in the afternoon, it would have been a shame not to drop into Niagara . . . the place I mean - not the Falls themselves - ha ha!

The falls are as lovely as ever, but I must tell you, driving into town there? Why was it necessary to make a Las Vegas out of such a lovely place as Niagara Falls?

The sight of all those hotels and casinos going up there made me want to scream! The vulgar materialism on display there stinks to high sin, in my opinion.

And they're still building! I have this horrible image of seeing buildings so close to the falls that the average person wouldn't be able to see them from the Canadian side unless they could afford a couple of hundred bucks to get a room there.

We chose a spot a couple of levels up from the falls. It only cost us 2 bucks to park on a side street beside one of the hotels, and we set up our folding chairs beside the fence and enjoyed the view.

We couldn't find any quaint little coffee shop on its own, of course, so we went into one of the big hotels and got coffees from the Starbucks canteen. We sat in the lobby's lounge to drink the coffee. It was rather nice, but I'd like to see more small places outdoors with patios.

We got back home to Toronto around 4:00, had dinner and a good long nap.

It was a day well spent.
