Hello everyone :) I am sending out a request for help. We have a three year old elm tree that has been doing great. Just recently I noticed that from the ground and about 10" to 12" up the trunk the bark is "splitting" and exposing the core. There is still new growth at the top of the canopy, but I don't know how to fix this. Any ideas on how to save this tree?? Please help. Thank you!

Welcome, kacyb.
You sent me on a search and this is what I found
http://www.treesforyou.org/Planting/TreeCare/Healthy/trunk.htm
It confirmed what I thought that there is little that you can do about it except hope the tree survives it.

Thank you very much for finding the info. I will do my best to keep the wound clean and see what happens. We did have a much colder winter than normal. Several severe negative cold snaps. It also had a fast growth spurt here just recently. Will be sad if we loose it, but hopefully it will be ok. Thanks again for the help!
