Hi there, I need help, my mother in law lost her cherry tomato seeds that she has been planting for years. However, it wasn't the tiny little cherry tomato, but a slightly larger one? Can anyone give me the name of common original larger cherry tomatos that have been around for years before the tiny little ones came in? Thanks

I googled large cherry tomato seeds and got a bunch of them. Heirloom ones, just called large cherry tomatoes. For instance, Patriot Supply has them for $1.50 a packet. I just put in a large order with them. http://www.mypatriotsupply.com/Large_Red_Cherry_Tomato_Survival_Heirloom_Seeds_p/lrct.htm

Just as information: I have a plant file, to keep my records in, I find it is helpful at such times. Tina is right, and the link should help you find which cherry tomato plant you want. Just as information, the tiny ones are often called grape tomatoes. or sweet 100's. BUT, I want to ask, do you mean an actual cherry tomato or the smaller, regular tomato called a Jolly tomato. Google that one to look at it as well. AND if you go to a nicer (larger) nursery they have photos in front, and in the pots, of the plants that they have on sale, so just by looking you could see which plant it is that you wanted. Then, if you find the plant that way, I would buy a plant with the pictured plant steak inside of the pot (not all do) And then I would keep the pictured steak in my file so I could refer to it if needed. I find that cherry tomatoes often come back as volunteers. Perhaps your mom could NOT cultivate the area where she planted her cherry tomatoes last year until she saw what was coming back up this year. Then all she would have to do is carefully remove the seedings, prepare the area & replant the seedlings (several more than what she wants, to ensure she gets a few good starts). PS: sometimes I just let the seedlings grow where they came up instead of trying to move them to where I want. Sorry your Mom lost her seeds, I hope we were able to help you.

I must have mis-read something. As far as I know, Plum tomatoes are a smaller type tomato, oblong in shape, meaty tomatoes with less seeds & liquid in them. Grape tomatoes, are like cherry tomatoes only much much smaller....am I wrong???

No, you are not wrong, Carol. Plum tomatoes as I know them are about the size of a roma with the same basic qualities. Grape tomatoes are the size of grapes.

Tina..and there is the reason why I have not been able to find my "Jolly" tomatoes for several years. The year I bought them, they were called "jolly" as in the variety. Apparently they were actually a larger cherry tomato variety. Thanks for the link.

Interesting....here cherry tomatoes are over an inch in size, 'tiny tims' are the ones that are even smaller for patio pots. Grape tomatoes are the mini version of a plum tomato. Either way...they are all delicious. Heirloom seeds are the best way to go...true seeds.

I will be more careful in future with my garden plants & seeds. But see, when it comes to tomatoes, for one, I want until may & buy small plants...But then my back yard is a swamp.

I always buy tomato plants...even then the only ones that have time to ripen are the cherry variety.

Thank you guys, your awesome but by the sounds of it, is probably a plum cherry tomato, we always simply called them a cherry tomato. They are definitely not the size of sweet 100's or Tiny Tims, or grape, they are slightly bigger, but yes, they are probably the size of the mini Roma's except round in nature. Good news, mother in law found her seed, so were all okay for now, but good to know what she has, incase it happens again. She is going to give me a plant, so when it gets tomatoes, I will take a picture so you guys can all identify the size of it. Will save some seed as well to keep them going. I have never heard of Jolly cherry tomatoes around here. Thanks again, and wish you guys lots of sunshine.
