My friend has a Scheffelera plant--it looks simply beautiful but she needs to know if she can prune it,& if there is a certain time to do this. Also their seems to be some kind of bug or fungus on the underside of the "leaves" Whatever this is, it is not there all the time--and is white & soft dot like in shape.
Any help you could give her would be appreciated.

sounds like MEALY BUGS eeew!!! (tiny white puffs and sticky leaves)i hate them any type of soapy water or soapy insecticide works well to get rid of them... scheffeleras can be pruned when they form more than one branch, its hard for the average person to tell whats a new branch and just whats just the stalk of a compound leaf... try to post a pic i'll see what i can help you with...

I prune mine. I also take the top cutting and apply rooting hormone and replant in the bottom of the pot. My Schleffera is very full to say the least.
