Hi everyone ~ wavey

Blooming and I were talking the other night and she mentioned she picked "Mountain Laurel" as part of her name because it is PA's State Flower.

Which got me thinking, would y'all mind telling which are your State Flowers?

Maine is Lupine, which I think is so lovely.

Anyone else?

Tennesseans love Texans. I was born and raised in Tennessee, but my mother was born and raised in Texas, a little place called Hackberry, TX that doesn't exist anymore. It was near Farmer's Branch and Carrollton, TX. I lived near Austin for two years and my daughter now lives in Hilltop Lakes, TX.

72? You guys would NEVER survive out here! Plus in Tucson we have evaporative coolers, which don't function when it's over 100, or when it's humid. Right now it's hot and rainy, and we're suffering.
Posted By: Merme Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 20th, 2005 at 04:56 PM
Amber honey, in conditions like that, I would be in a little puddle on the floor!

I've heard of Coolers but didn't know what they are. I think Nana's11 in Colorado has one for her house there but I recall her saying something about it not working right for AZ.

Just WHEN can you look forward to a real break in the weather?

Merme
Posted By: Nana's11 Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 20th, 2005 at 10:14 PM
Hi Amber ,

I once lived in Tucson - many moons ago- have lots of family in Az- hubby is one of 11 kids- so lots of family there....LOL
I remember the monsoon season and feeling like you are always dripping - even taking a shower didn't help much - coolers are wonderful till the humidity goes up... we have one here and it works well cause we don't have the humidity here-- and our house in 3 levels + the basment- 1 level is half underground too so that helps a lot- so we just have a window cooler and it cools the whole house really well... we lived in Glendale outside Phoenix for about 18 years and had AC there-- this house doesn't have ductwork so can't put on an AC- newer houses here have it but it isn't really a necessity here - coolers work fine for the most part- we are over 100 again today they say again - so it will be on again in a little while- we lived in Yuma too and coolers did not work there at all- to much humidity with the monsoon storms---
Merme a cooler is a big box like thing- has a pump inside that brings water up and over the pads on the side of the box part- motor brings in air thru the wet pads and then blows it into the house-- kind of like the old idea of a block of ice behind a fan-- since it blows wet water it only works well when the humidity isnt' high... but can freeze you out when it isnt'.
Posted By: Fernie Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 20th, 2005 at 10:24 PM
Do they still call them swamp coolers? I remember living in Phoenix and Tempe (a suburb) and the first year there was so shocked when we got the monsoons. Even AC didn't work wonderfully during that time. The only thing that really worked was getting into a pool with a long straw and staying underwater. Absolutely miserable heat and humidity.

I also found out that the lovely desert spring bloom, lasts about 5 minutes and is very easy to miss. That was so disappointing. I have some relatives in southern AZ and my dad lived in Jerome for time when he was a kid. Now that is a cool place. AZ is one beautiful state but I was so homesick for Idaho and family that I came back home.
Posted By: Nana's11 Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 20th, 2005 at 10:48 PM
Yes in Az they call them that- cause you feel like you are in a swamp when running it and th humidity is high-- we moved from Alaska in July to Phoenix- we spent the next yr in the pool- even thru the winter-- it was in the 70's most of them time and that was summer weather to us .. so know what you mean about the pool and straw--
and yes you have to be in the desert right after a rain to see the flowers- though I read in the Yuma paper on line they had a beautiful one this spring from the extra rain they had - all one inch of it extra--- Jerome is a neat place- been there a couple of times ---
Posted By: Amber J Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 21st, 2005 at 02:21 PM
My husband is in Phoenix right now and he has a nice frosty AC in his hotel room. I come home today to my "swamp cooler", and I think the back half of my body has actually melted off.

Living in AZ, I am convinced Mother Nature definitely has a bipolar disorder, and could use some heavy mood stabilizers.
Posted By: Nana's11 Re: Your State Have A Flower? - July 21st, 2005 at 07:23 PM
I think every place has its pros and cons-- when we moved here from Az I was sure I would freeze- but not so bad now and when we go back down I think - now why did I stay in Az for so long?
Now in the middle of winter - expecially after a blizzard and 4 ft of snow I want to go back...LOL!
