But you gotta think that the prices are all subjective....I can go to Save a lot and get the grocery items for way less if I wanted. Their bread there is 2 for 1.09 or something. Plus some stores charge a lot more for cigs than other...if I bought a pack in Martins grocery store chain or Walmart they'd be four something a pack....

Thanks guys and gals, just wanted to prove a point of how our minimum wage is about the same but everything costs double here.
Another thing around here is that they no longer hire for a 40 hour week, they hire two part timers instead so they don't have to pay benefits.
If DH can't find another job by the end of the summer I am seriously thinking of selling my house and moving out west to Alberta. Every place that he works ends up down sizing and he ends up being in the last bunch hired.
Minimum wage in Cal is 7.75 I think. Sounds good but housing is over the top. It's hard to find an apartment for under a thousand. And they keep saying that we have the highest gas prices in the US.
Tamara,
I work at what you call the DMV. It has been privatized out here so it is privatley owned but run under the government policies etc.
We are getting more and more people from the east moving here for work. Seems we have too much work and not enough workers..
So come on down. You'll be more than welcome
I just looked over this topic again and it makes me wonder why the gas is so high where I live, and everyone else is paying from $2.29 to around $2.59 a gallon all over the country.
Rachel called on her way to work this morning and said the Speedway where she usually gets gas was $3.64 this morning.

I can't get over the price of cigs in Canada....I think I'd make a trip across to the US every now and then and buy some if I live close enough to the border.....
They keep raising the taxes on cigarettes hoping to keep the youth from being able to afford them and to get more people to quit. They are supposed to use the extra tax $$ for our health care system...
A few years back they cut the price in half when they found that there was a big cigarette smuggling rings and they weren't getting their tax money!! But the prices go up alot without warning and they are probably heading for the same problems.

The national minimum wage is $5.15, some states make it higher and here at least very few places pay the minimum.
The southeast states were hit hard by the closure of the pipe line following the hurricanes and suddenly had to start paying exorbitant gas prices. I used to feel very smug at sometimes paying half what my mother in the northeast was paying. Those days are gone, sometimes she pays less than I do.
BTW gas prices are set by level of demand which is why gas is usually cheaper on Wednesdays. During peak travel seasons it's higher on Friday and Monday.
