Okay after my Willys had their last fall gathering here I planted in a variety of sedum. This is located in the hottest dryest sunniest side of the yard..
I also want some type of cascading flower incorporated here that is heat drought tolerant,, will Aubieta whitewell gem flowers work here?? If soo when should I plant the seeds?? any other suggestions??
I'm curious to know if some periwinkle might work in there.
Sedum, however, should take you there - I started growing the stuff way back in the mid nineties - just from pickings - all you need is a little pinch and it gets going.
I like the red stuff.
Thanks Carly I like the red dragons blood too I thought it would really stand out againt the white rock,! I don't know about periwinkle
Does any one know??
Ohhhh Carly I looked up periwinkle!!
I know it as Vinca ,
I'd forgotten it's also know as periwinkle
I rellly think it would be great there! I had some last year in the front yard around a tree and it really took off and got thick and lush but then again there was part shade in the front and it looked great.. I will give it a try this spring to see if it can tolerate no shade at all. Thanks for the suggestion!!!
I agree - vinca/periwinkle would look great there!
How about some ice plant? I've not had luck with it here, but the leaves are succulent and it has some very pretty, bright flowers!
Hi ya Lynne
First time for them so I don't know I thought I might do them in a container in afternoon dappled shade, and see what happens.
what about rock cress
snow in the summer
rock soapwort
theres a ice plant thats a sedum, the varietie is called s spectabile, is that the one lynnes talking about? i have the autumn joy sedum and its done well in both full sun and shade except in shade it will strech for the sunlight,
the vinca will do very well in that sunny spot!!! it'll trail nicely too so, it'll look terrific draping down over the rocks!
What a great idea....i love it!!!
i just googled vinca, those are realy pretty!
it IS really pretty!! i put some in this one spot next to my driveway...it's a small slope that i'm going to modify by putting in a retaining wall and then even out the grade. the vinca is just a temporary measure to avoid further erosion. it took over the area really nicely! it gets full sun for most of the day...
it's supposed to be for sun or shade. i see this all over the place - any area where it's shady the stuff grows, just doesn't spread too well.
so, the key with the vinca is to put it in a nice sunny spot!
Sybil Oh Ohhh I have snow in the summer seeds!!!
is rock cress the same as aubrieta ?? Hmmm going to have to look up rock cress!<<-- Just looked it up~ Nope not the same, But according to the picture I realllly Love the purple rock cress!
no, not iceplant. they are pink sundials aka portulaca. they'd look nice on those rocks too!!
and they also do extremely well in that kind of bright, all-day sunlight...some of mine got to be over a foot long! (i planted them in a different spot than previously)
Diane, I have some Dragons Blood and Blue Spruce Sedum if you would like, I can send you some starts. They do great in shippig as I got mine from Sarah and Tina and they love the full sun!
diane i think you should add lots more rocks for lots more plants!
i so love how you have that set up!
i cant wait to see what it looks like this summer!
i can send you some vinca if you want it...will have to wait tho as it's covered with snow at the moment!
Oh Joclyn that would be great!!!
WOW I didn't know Vinca came back?????? The vinca around the tree in the front yard was frozen during our unexpected ice storm and then it wilted
I just figured it was gone for ever and I would have to replant this spring???
there are two types of vinca. the vining type (aka periwinkle) is perennial. the other type is an annual flower.
even tho it's WAY below freezing, my vinca is still green...you can see it poking up through the snow. don't know why the mailman didn't see it when he walked right through the bed today
altho it would probably be okay now (and would root okay), i'd like to wait until it's warmer so that i can send you some that already has roots.
Joclyn I must have had the annual
Hey Sybil! I stacked more rock on the pile today I had to lift off two of the larger existing ones . Dannnng they were heavy
. I didn't build it up to high maybe another 6-8" 'just added more spaces for More plants
woo hoo! cant wait to see it!
Me too....cant wait to see more!!

I going thru my seeds this week end and Organize to see what I can plant now! Hope fully There will be some!!!
Oh Joclyn I found the seeds you sent!!!
That looks so pretty Diane!!! I love it and well done!!!!!!
Portulaca is heat and drought tolerant and comes in all sorts of pretty colors
right, wrennie!! it stays in flower virtually all summer and it will look really nice as it drapes over the rocks, too!!
that sounds so pretty! cant wait to see it this summer!
Jocylyn I'm planting your seeds today!!!!

wow those are cool lookin!
Sibyl~~~~~~~~From what I've read they are easy to start,, Let me know if you want some starts
That will look so pretty Diane!!!!
Thanks Penny!
That donkey tail spurge is a really cool plant. Another one I had last year planted into a pile of rocks is creeping wire vine. I LOVE it. It isn't invasive, but grows like crazy and is a little different than the sedums. Another idea would be some hens and chicks. I had some that hung over a foot off the edge of a big pot, it was really cool. There is a picture of the wire vine on my post "my pictures from last summer", if you want to check it out.
diane i would love starts!!!!
Those sound like some great suggestions too, some of them i havent heard of, like the donkey tail...gonna have to check that one out!!
Any new pictures Diane>???
i think all our gardens look like that at one point or another! last spring i had newspaper all over my yard to protcet the seedlings from a late frost,
and g-bags over some in fall to protect em so i could get seeds
gotta do whatcha gotta do!
i second that penny! i love to see more pics! just wait till she gets her willys out! more room to party!
Teacher 37 ~~ I looked at your pictures I'm not sure which is the vine your talking about is it the one climbing the gate????
Ohhh Yeah Penny and Sybil the willys are getting upset cuz I did take teeny tiny willy out side and put him on the bridge already the other teeny tiny willy is hiding and I can't find him I don't think he wants to deal with the cold nights yet
I uncovered everything today because it's near 60 today BUT tonight back to covering up-again Geeezzzz I wish this weather would make up my mind!!
I still Can't find Teeny tiny Willy's brother He must be really mad!!
Oh well he'll get over it!!! I'm taking some more out today!!
Oh Goody I have little seedling starting in the pockets of the rocks Joclyns are sprouting!!!
That all looks great Diane!!! I cannot wait to see it as it all grows and fills out.
Hey Thanks Triss !! Just a few more weeks and it should be filling out nicely!!
WOW! HLC that looks awsome!
thanks Sybil!! I'll be sending the dony tail spurge along with the datura moon flower seeds!!
Both pictures look amazing Diane!!!!!
Hens n' Chicks - it won't take long for that to grow out.
That's perfect for your strawberry pot - I started using one this year too - I have potato vine in mine.
Carly I do have a few chicken and hens in the rock pile AND in a pocket of the strawberry pot!! The large one on top is the Black sav' varitety
Someone mentioned whether Ice Plant grows well in extreme heat; I had Ice Plant in a border in the desert in CA, and it grew all over the place there in landscaping.
Diane, I sent you a PM; since you have this topic gong here, now, it may not still be applicable.
I already put willys out there yesterday~
Eventually when spring comes in for everyone and we
all can get our willys outside I probably (
or someone will ) start a thread about "willys in our garden" and we'll go from there .. Talk about a fun topic!!!
Your Probably Right!! Ohh Seee I found wee willys brother I put him to work on the bridge!! Also added another rosemoss in the Rock pile,, can you spot it??
I love that lizard back there!
I saw one almost exactly like it in a picture.
It was on a building in Germany, of all places!!
That is such a beautiful place you have created!!
he finally came out of hiding!
they look so cute on the bridge!
Diane, that looks soooo awesome. I am going to be on the hunt for flat rocks this summer when we are out and about. I wanna rock tower like that!!!
dianne, that looks FANTASTIC!!!!
Thanks You guys!!! IT was worth the back ache,, Here's the Funny thing about it Dwight didn't even know I was doing it!!! He rarely comes outside in the back yard!! I finally showed Him Sunday He response was...,
"What Is IT??"
OMG I wanted to Choke him!!!!
instead I told him to go back in the house and do what you do best~ Sitting in the recliner watching Basketball!!
Shirley I have four willy's out there can you see them all??
Yes! I could only see three; the big one and the two on the bridge, but now I see the one up there in front of the lizard! He's almost the same color as the lizard, and while I was admiring the him I didn't even notice Willy!!
The whole thing is such a pretty place.
they have no clue!
I love that rock pile, Diane!
Cuz if Mama 's not happy ~~Ain't nobody Happy..
Ya got that right!
Thanks Dianna!!
