Jayhawks thread on Quilts and more has some of us inspired to do either a Round Robin/Tag or a crafty swap. We were talking fabrics at first, but decided all different kinds of crafts would include more people and be more fun. So If you sew, paint, knit, crochet, weave, scrapbook, stamping, do dried flowers... any kind of make it yourself craft youre invited to play. We'll have a short questionnaire so you can let everyone know your likes, dislikes, what you may be looking for, or have to get rid of, and what sort of craft you do. Sound fun? Wanna play? Please leave input and ideas here.
P.S. If you know other Members who do crafts please tell them to come down and look!
I think I'd prefer a swap, especially if different crafts particiapte. That way we can all be sure to get something we can use no matter who sends it to us.
I think it will go faster also.
How does everyone else feel? I'll be happy to go with whatever kind of exchange is chosen.
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, it's inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." by Winston Churchill
I think any sort of exchange would be fun but my preference would be for a swap. That way, everyone's package can be made "especially" for them and if only one person paints, then that person will definitely get painting items. It would be sad to paint and find stuff for every other craft but that.

The more I thought about it as I typed in here and in your quilts thread, I think a swap is better too.
Another question. I did a swap like this elsewhere, where we gave things we made as well as supplies for the gift recipients craft of choice. (with the intention of you could keep what your gifter made you or save it to give as a gift yourself) Do we want the option of adding something we made or just go for supplies, patterns etc??
I WANNA! a craft swap is great....i think just a craft handmade for whoever we got, that way it is really special! sign me up! i can help you and jayhawk if you need it, but i don't know what i could do....LMK
I think about that size box is good. Just remember to weigh it first and be sure a flat rate is actually saving you money. I dont think it should be a rule those. But a suggestion for about what size it is we're thinking of. If someone wants to send something breakable the bubble wrap or whatever packing might need a bigger box than the flat rate ones.
If anyone isnt sure the Flat rate box measures 11" x 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". Theres also a flat rate one thats flatter, like a shirt gift box shape. I dont have one here to measure. Again, depending on size & shape etc of what youre sending.
And you now can use priority boxes to mail out of country. I just dont know the cost difference or if flat rate applies.
ladies, count me in!!! But I will need rules & such.
I vote for a swap also. but I like to give as well.
Flat rate boxes are ok with me, but I would like the option to see if a regular rate box would cost less to ship. or did I misunderstand you Triss? were you referring to the size of the box, more than the cost??
I only ask because I ship a lot of things. my postmaster has me bring in 2 boxes. One flat rate & one not. She weighs and I ship the cheapest way.
Wrennie: I think perhaps Triss meant that the 'extra" gift should be just that-an extra item-- and the main focus should be on the swap items. Am I right Triss??

Its more for size suggestion I think Carol. The box that is. We were seeing if there was enough interest before making the rules. Any thoughts on them? pretty much just like the gift exchanges I would think.
I think the rules would be pretty similiar to the gift exchanges, also. I am really happy to see this idea taking off. It's so great that others are wanting to participate, how exciting!
I like the idea that we can send supplies and finished products.
It would really be special if we got something we can use and something the giver made!
This is going to be a lot of fun!!!

Aww man!! I wish I could take part in this, but I have too much going on right now to commit to it. Hopefully you guys will have this again next yr and I will have made a few things by then.
Great Idea!

I think a craft swap is a great idea and I would love to participate, however, seeing as I'll be on crutches and won't be able to drive my car for a while I will not be able to join you on this. I will expect lots of pictures though.
k, here is a question....what if i get someone's name whose likes are totally opposite from stuff i know how to make....then what......just a goodie box of supplies for their craft?? i can't sew worth *#@*, but give me a hot glue gun and i will make anything...
i know alot of you are into quilting, that scares me

Wendy, I may be into quilting, but I am far from proud of my stitches.
K, so is this how it would work??, we get a list from our 'swap" person----we get together a box of suppiles for them, that will come from said list. Then if we so choose, we can send them something that WE made as an extra gift. But the something we made will be on a smaller scale than what we are sending as the main swap item/s???
Help--I am new to this also & I will be needing guidance.

Not sure here, it takes me forever to get to town to get the supplies then forever to get to the post office to mail it. Reason I've never joined a swap before.
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
Please when we get to the wish list part be as detailed as possible. Ie if you do stamping dont just say I like new stamps. cats? Expressions? bugs? Hard rubber ones, foamys?? No sense getting something you wont use.
Everyone who is saying no, keep an eye down here. We aren't even set on a date for it to start yet.
Anyone have a date to start prefrence? I think a difference between this and the gift game is we will need a little more time from when we get our name to when we have to ship by. So we can make something (if we are making something) specifically for our giftee instead of a sort of generic thing. (make sense?) ie If I want to make my giftee potholders but dont know her kitchen colors or if she likes modern or antique looks I have to wait till the day I get her name to start them. See?
Gift swap rules tweaked to fit a crafty swap: Please note what I added in red is not written in stone. Also the me in the rules is not ME, its the administrator moderator. In this case Jiffy said shed do it. Dont pm her anything yet till the dates are a 'done deal'. Gift Swap Rules
If you would like to participate, please read the rules, then send me a pm with Craft Swap for the subject line, and your address (if I don’t already have it) along with your email address. Phone numbers are nice, but not required. Also the words "i agree to follow the rules" in the body. here are the rules:
1 - all members must be signed up by August 5 is this an agreeable date everyone? 2 – post your answers to the questionnaire in the next post. to follow 3 - names will go out by pm on or before to be determined 4 - all gifts must be mailed out by to be determined, approximately 2 weeks after you get your giftees name. Or is 1 week better? failure to do so will make you ineligible to participate in future gift swaps and could result in other penalties 5 - in the event of disaster striking you before you can mail out your box, notifying me as soon as possible will preserve your ability to play in the future. don't laugh, it could happen. we had 2 in another swap. please include the reason, even if it is just "i got snowed under and couldn't do it" 6 - gifts should be mailed with a tracking number when possible (even the post office offers that for only about 50 cents more) BUT... 7 - if you order your gift to be "direct shipped" please pm me when the order is placed, with the company name so i can post "so-and-so's gift has been ordered direct ship". 8 - finally - just like last time, that there is no specific amount, but please be mindful of other's budgets, and please make sure that you would be happy if you got what you sent out. if in doubt, $10-$30 VALUE is always a safe bet. and value is much more important than cost. 9 - post that you received your gift as soon as you get it, but at least within 3 days. pictures are great if you can! 10 - the administration of this board reserves the right to amend the rules as necessary.
This is just a preliminary. Anyone else have any questionsthey'd want to know??

~ What types of crafts do you enjoy? ~ What is (are) your favorite color(s)? ~ Are you allergic to anything? ~ What is the decor in your home like? {{style, colors, remember my potholder example}} ~ Colors in the rooms (main rooms like kitchen, potty room, living room &dining room)? ~ Do you like knick-knacks? {{i.e. angels, bears, owls..things like that, indoors out in the garden?}} ~ Do you like T-shirts? what size? ~ please make a wishlist of 10 items you wish you had to do your craft;
in the wish list please be specific as possible without writing a novel. Ie I collect cat fabrics I want to make a quilt out of someday. They are all 100% cotton so if I got more I'd want 100% again. If you use craft paints are they oil or acrylic? Beads, glass, plastic, metal?
Please add your input dont answer the ???'s yet in case we add more.
Here are a few questions that Glenda and I had thought up. I think most of them are Glenda's, actually, I just reworded them. Good questions, I thought, though!
What are your fabric pattern preferences, ie dots, stripes, animals, whimsical, solid, etc? Are their any patterns, brands, or related items that you do not like? (i.e. I don't like red heart yarn or czech beads, or anything yellow with owls and green dots) Are you working on anything specific that you would like extra materials for? Is your crafting random or do you always follow a pre-set pattern?
Wrennie, I think we need longer than August 5th. That is only 5 days away and we do not know yet what Jiffy's schedule is and if she can run things so soon. Also gives us time to make sure everyone sees it. Maybe the 15th?
How about a question on if you are wishing you could start a new craft and would like items to get you going?
Also one about what were your last 10 craft projects you completed so we can all get a good idea about what each other really does.
good idea triss! i could let ya know if i could join by the 15th, that would also give us who have a hard time getting to the post office time to get to the post office, for the boxes alls i have are bubble envolopes im savin for the seed tag n tammys seed swap. i dont want to join unless i have the flat rate boxes already at hand, getting to the store is no poublem, i work right by wallmart, getting to the post office is another story,

added ~If you are wishing you could start a new craft and would like items to get you going, what would they be? ~ What were your last 10 craft projects you completed? {so we can get a good idea about what each other really does.} ~Do you want a completed project from your secret gift pal?{{Also a space where we can let whoever gets our name know we would like something they've made?! The last question was more like, are you a perfectionist and prefer everything coordinated and matching or are you more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person anything, matching or otherwise, will work for your projects. Does that make sense?
so, like, if someone wants quilt fabric do they want any mish mosh of colors & patterns or do they want only colors & patterns that match or coordinate.
Wrennie, did NL change her mind and I just didn't see it?

Yup. That's what I was going for. Although I do like Triss's take on it too.
Instead of me searching thru I was wondering what the monetary limit was???? I think it would be a good idea to have some kind of limitations on how much each person should spend.

In the rules I copied {and tweaked} It says a limit of $10 - $30 is that good with everyone?
And is Aug. 15 a better 'sign up by' date?
And remember to send your info to Jiffy not me. I think I should have just changed that in the tweakings.

Carol I added your idea in with the wish list part.
Remember dont answer yet. almost. soon. but not yet.
Question: Is anyone against including 'used', leftovers, opened, partially used, leftover, supplies? ie I have some colored hot glue sticks I'll never use, leftover spools partly used of ribbon & lace. plastic canvas shapes & scraps, pattern leaflets, patterns pulled out of magazines, etc. etc. etc. Anyone hate the idea of 'good shape' leftovers?
I think that is a great idea, Wrennie. After all, in quilting fat quarters are the "leftovers" from fabric. At least, they used to be, now they're just a good way to move product.
August 15th is a good sign up date. My daughters birthday is the 20th, school starts that week too, and things are going to get hectic real fast, so anything that places the gift purchasing after that 20th is fantastic. And I'm going to need something to distract me from the fact that she's going to be away from me from 7:30-3:30 every day.

I even have some things that were hand me downs/ pass alongs, not opened but close to (or beyond)vintage now. Anybody like zodiac stuff? I have cross stitch patterns(I think thats still here) and bias tape with zodiac on it.
I think it is okay Wrennie if it is something that person might want/use. I would hate for somebody to send me their junk (not that you would Wrennie) but I wouldn't want others to think that they can just unload all of their junk that they won't use onto somebody else. Do you know what I am saying?
oh yeah i do! I got into a craft round robin somewhere else. You should have seen some of the JUNK in there. Throw it away quality. I have some perfectly good things that were project ideas that just never flew. And like you said if it's something the giftee can use.
Wrennie, you can send me any of your good left-overs!! Yes, I think someone could throw in a couple of things left over, not make the whole box left-overs though!! I love left over lace or seam binding or scraps of fabric!! No patterns because I've got HUNDREDS!!!
I like that idea, Triss. I have a few yards of some cool cat fabric that I'm never gonna use. Golly, who might want those?

How small of a scrap is usable? I once sent a quilter pieces as small as 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches?? Any type of fabric? Cotton? Blends?brocade? felt? I have 4 6 totes just of fabrics.
The list thing is a great idea Triss. I better start now. I just sent a big box of stuff to Crochetville for their auction and you cant tell anything is gone. I've had a bunch on the 2 online yardsales this year and the 2 I did in front of my store last sumer, still have more.....
once again, i'm not "in" but will be the admin in charge. mostly because i don't want in this time, too much with the wedding right now. don't feel bad for me though, i LOVE administering these
the "to jiffy with your "i'm in" date" is going to be by midnight August 17. There is a good reason for that date. it is a friday, so i'll have the weekend to tweak the list, it is the first weekend i DON'T have something going on, and, it is exactly 2 weeks before the labor day holiday here in the states. mail date will be that saturday before labor day (september 1).
wrennie has a good tweak on the rules.
i think the word we are looking for is "excess" supplies. like the colored glue sticks. or the "just a pattern" for cross stitch that i bought and then didn't use. and the file box full of half skeins of yarn i have.
please define "fat quarters" for those of us who do not quilt (i'm thinking they are a specific size square).
wrennie, if you will post the questionaire topic, i'll sticky it and edit it (or loz can) as new questions get thought of. please keep this topic (parts 1 to infinium) for the discussion, the questionaire topic is only for questionaire answers. next week, i'll finish the rules and post them with a sticky post too. that topic will have the players list and each person can post the "i'll follow the rules" in there too.
PLEASE send me your phone number and/or email address if you are participating. the last 2 swaps AND one of the tags were saved because i could call people to get things squared away. i can start collecting the names/info now, if you want. but i won't be posting the "approved" list just yet. i'm a little dingy right now.
ok, i'm closing this book. i'll copy this post into each part of this topic as they appear.
i guess i should have said that if you are in a specific type of crafting (quilting, crochet, etc) please explain specific terms so that your pal can understand them. (i know what bedspread cotton is, but not what fat quarters are)
Sounds good to me Jiffy! I don't know what fat quarters are either!
I don't know fabric/quilting supply prices, but can we really send a decent amount for $10-$30?
I think that price range is a bit too broad.....I think it should be either $10-$20, or $20 to $30.......I'm not worried about what I receive, but I'd feel bad if I sent out $10 worth and got $30 worth from my pal. Not that I would do that, everyone knows I like to shop. Just using that as an example.
loz, i think $20-$30 is the right amount. remember, this is also to pass along stuff we have that we won't/can't use, but is either new, or practically new, or totally usable, like leftover yarn.
I think, on all the gift exchanges I've been in here, some got more spent on them than they spent of the things they sent and no none had a problem with that.
The whole idea is to get something "new" and to have lots of fun!! How do you put a price on something you've made and sent on to someone?
As for the fat quarters mentioned above, in my area they cost $1.00 (on sale) to $2.50. Four or five of those would make me very happy and only cost around $5-$10. To me the cost doesn't matter as much as the thought going into the gift.
So don't worry about spending a lot just because you may get a lot spent on you!!!
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, it's inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." by Winston Churchill
OOOOH! OOOOH! I remember what I forgot to remember before when I was in here forgetting what I forgot to remember!
Another idea is gift cards Or is that too complex with 'what stores are near you, what co's can only be used in stores not online (like Hancock Fabrics) etc.?'
Yeh, I'm not worried about the amount spent on me---I just want to make sure I get my person enough...I always worry about that. That's why I shop in excess for people.
I don't think I have leftover craft stuff. I use most of mine up. And nope you can't put a price on a handmade craft at all ....I know the work that goes into that stuff, I just wanted a good price set for how much I should spend on crafting supplies for my person. Like the fabric things seem like a good price....I had no idea what they were so that's good to know. Seems like we have quite a few people into fabric and quilting and I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to that stuff.

1 1/2" squares of fabric are very usable! Cotton and blends are great! some brocade would be wonderful because I have designed a Medieval quilt in which I would love some brocade!! Felt would be good to cut to shape and glue to the bottoms of my ceramic pieces! So you see ALL things are good! Never fear about how much 'stuff' you send me!! But not patterns!!!! I design most of my own stuff.
apparently I do NOT know what quilters quarters are--thought i did.
so what are the small bundles of co-ordianteing fabric that are tied together .--these bundles can & do come in different sizes but there is all the same sizes in each tied bundle.
FYI: I have a quilting store here in the next town. 5 minutes away!!!
I have a whole drawer full of lace (s) material & all kinds of such things. ya got to buy it when you see it---

Fat quarters are often folded to about a 4 inch square. Looks can be deceiving.
You probably did see a bundle of fat quarters!

Kinda sorta like that Wrennie. I was saying if I needed to craft something I would have to sit this one out due to just simply being too busy right now. I would love to be able to send my pal something I have created, but this time around it just isn't possible. So if that were a requirement, I woudl have to pass.
