I saw a beautiful tree today. Driving by... It was every bit as big as an oak. And it had stunning grape-like clusters of purple streaming off the branches. Oh! I would love to have one! Got any ideas what I may have seen? I don't have a picture and probably won't be out that way again soon to get one. Sorry. But I tried to google large purple flowering trees and I can't find it. cry

Yep. Looked like that. Can Wisteria climb a huge tree???? It would have been all over this gigantic tree I saw. But that may be what it was...I think I need a wisteria to climb all over my house!!!! LOL

Gawlee, that one is pretty. I think what I saw had flowers hanging downwards. That looks like they're standing upwards, but also very nice. Also the tree was as tall as about a 3rd story window!

I have a huge back yard and I am looking for a great shade tree that is different than all the trees in my neighborhood. EVERYONE has a Bradford Pear. I am sick of looking at them! Some redbuds are around too, I want to be original and envied!

Oh, also wondering.. Would a wisteria harm a tree if it were growing on it? I wouldn't want to endanger a tree's health especially with Oklahoma's strong winds! We have to care for our trees or we will be fixin' our roofs!

afaik, wisteria need something to support them. especially when they are younger.

there's a house by my work that has two by the front porch. omg! it looked fantabulous last year with the blooms surrounding the whole outline of the porch roof!!!

they are VERY well-established tho...they're actually so old that they've become trees. you can really see that now since they just trimmed them back...i thought it was just odd-looking leafless trees in the yard until i realized that it was the yard that has the wisteria!

you'd have to research them to see if they'll be appropriate for your area.

the paulownia actually gets much much larger than is shown in that pic...and they grow really quickly too...check out the website for paulownia supply

I love a Jacaranda. Don't think I am ever going to live where I can grow one, but if I could, I think I'd have about 70.

Actually I had never seen of heard of one. Maybe that is it. I may need to make a point to go out there and pass by that tree again to see what it looked like again and get closer up to it. I love this forum. I get all kinds of help!!

I knew that, but she didn't really mention where she was driving, and could have been an area where it could have been grown..

They can be grown in pots/containers..
and can take some cold temps,
And a established tree can take temps in to the 20*'s
*not for overly long periods though*

And with the micro climates', one never knows these days...

***Do you know I am a zone 5 here, but I can over winter a dahlia outside.. in the ground...In my mirco climate here by the side of my house...***

So, hence, it's not totally impossible..

It was probably the wisteria though. But now I have learned a lot more about different sorts of georgeous trees.
Did anyone get their 10 free trees from Arbor Day foundation? I did. (Donated $10.00) I got the flowering trees. But you could choose between those and other kinds. I got 2 redbuds, 2 washington hawthorns, 2dogwood, 2cherry and 2 others, but I can't remember what they were. I am excited. I have one tree in my yard that I got for mother's day last year. It's a Dwarf Japanese Maple. So I needed some more! We have a big yard and the house gets hot in the summer. i want a Southern Magnolia in the back yard.

Just remember, when you get your trees,
don't be disappointed right away about the
size of the trees..
They are only probably 1 or 2 years old saplings'..
and are small.. but that's a good thing for the
trees' to come, they'll be more easily transplantable..
and you can watch them grow as the years go...

FWIW, A gardening friend of mine in zone 5 had a purple pea tree, but no one ever seemed to know the name of it. He said he grew it from a chance seedling that just showed up and it was 2 stories high, maybe. It had clusters of lavender colored Sweet Pea-like flowers hanging down from it. The leaves were also pea-like (as in from the same family as Sweet Peas with the same glaucous foliage) As I recall, it also had a nice fragrance when you got close enough to it.

He has since moved, but before he moved, he sawed it down. Every single flower must have produced seeds and he was overrun with them coming up everywhere.

Sorry I couldn't have a name for you, but I was thinking there might be seedlings near theone you saw. Perhaps you could sort of scout around near it and find a germinated seedling?

Yeah, I read online thta they are pretty small. That's fine, I figured such. After all, they were pretty cheap, shipping and all for just 10$ donation.

Well, some had the notion they might
be getting bigger trees, and when they got them
they were like, well, can't repeat it..
but I told them the same thing,
they'll little, just started trees and they're shipped
thru the mail, so it's not like they can be giganitic or anything.

I truly hope you keep us posted on how they're doing and
take many pictures to documentate their growth..
Would be fun to watch...

given the time of year, it is almost definitely a Wisteria supported by an old tree.

Jacaranda are not flowering yet. Paulownia do not have hanging clusters.

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!

Hi. I know I'm from Mars here, but I'm a new member and all I want is some info on planting tuberous begonias that are still in the package. I figure it's too late for this year (I live in Victoria BC Canada), but how do I post this question to everyone? I've been trying for 45 minutes and am told that there's a problem only admin knows about...it's always "try again please" Very frustrating! Maggie
