I was browsing through my cookbook and saw pictures of B.L.A.T's and I've been craving them ever since. Why can't someone grow good toms and ship them to me year round? Anyone else beginning to get the craving?

Do you know fresh home grown tomatoes come in the FALLL TIME,
like just before WINTERRRRRRRR???

heeehehehehe,
I swear us gardener's are masochistic...

Planting seeds in the spring and dreamin' of fall
harvest just to get that red, ripe, delicious, tangy, acidy, sweet, juicy tomato.. fresh from the garden..
*ahhhhhh man, you two have got me wantin' one now..*

I don't think it was very polite to remind me that my seeds won't be bearing anything delicious and mouthwatering until the fall. Now that makes me want my toms even MORE which makes my craving now Agony Infinitely worse. cry  cry lol

I hear you on that..
I just amaze myself sooooo much,
when I am finnnnnally out of winter here
and starting my seeds,
waiting for the over night temps to be
warm enough not to freeze my seeds over night
out in the greenhouse...

And I think when I plant those tomato seeds,
I am thinkin' of harvest time,
wishing it would be here NOW.......
And then I realize, if it were now,
I'd be headin' back into winter again...

I have been getting some vine ripened tomatoes
from the grocery store here, and if I let them sit
for a good bit, they finally ripen red and aren't so
hard.. and they are reasonably close
*I did say reasonably not totally*
And I can still have my summer!!! YAY!!!!

We had just had really good weather here the last couple of months. Been in the 70's most days the last 2 weeks, it has almost hit 80. The night time temps have been in the 60's.

But wait until we start having those 100+ days this summer!!!!

Brain~Drain here, but someone, new, just posted a picture for me
of a raised bed he did..*and I'm short on time, put will find his picture* but you could incorporate something like that,
and shade those tomatoes in the scalding heat/sun... (just and idea to think about)

It got so hot and dry last year everything shut down, after the heat was over some things started producing again.

I dread to see those days again, sometimes they last for weeks. When you wake up and it's already 85* you know it's going to be another hot one!!!! (But it does make the peppers and Orka grow good.)

I opened a new jar of homemade salsa. So it's like eating last years tomatoes now. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the recipe doesn't age well--it's pretty salty now. This year I'll be trying some new recipes.

Plus the way my yard slopes,
I get all the melting from the road ways too...

Nothing I can do about it...

*I have a picture (somewhere's lost in my menagerie`)
of my oldest son when he was about
3 or 4 and he's got his favorite push behind tractor...
And he's runnnnnnnnnnnnnning thru the "new stream" in
our back yard, doing rooster tails in the water...
it was sooo high up, cause there was sooooooooooo much water...

But I am still dyin' for a ripe tomato now... *rollseyes and cries*

Yes, me too! My seedlings (28 varities, 3 of each) are on their 2nd transplant and I can't wait. May 1 is my date for planting outside. I can't wait. Those tomatoe's at the grocery store are just horrible. Nothing like the first ripe one right off the vine! I don't share that one, I just pick it and pop it right into my big fat mouth! LOL

Oh my goodness...all this talk of Tomatoes!!!! This is going to be my first garden in the new place. I'm setting up 4 raised beds in the coming weeks, and the excitement is almost unmaintainable. Last year I had a volunteer tomato plant that, all things considered (terrible soil, crazy location), did pretty well. They were little tomatoes, and I harvested some of them and let them turn red in the kitchen. Some I left on the vine to ripen, and a few of them I threw to the critters of my backyard. Anyway..I am ever so excited...
As far as puddles, I don't have any children yet, but I DO have a dog who absolutely LOVES splashing in puddles. Right now, my poor backyard is VERY wet. But the snow is all gone. I think it's all in my basement now.

Luckily, nothing was lost. Our basement is pretty empty, minus the water..lol. And all things considered, it could be a lot worse. It's several inches. I'll be buying a utility pump soon.

I've just started the 2nd repot on my biggest ones and the last are just popping through. The biggest should be ready by May. If I can wait that long. Have been buying a few Campari's for the salads and BLT's. Just couldn't wait for mine. Jay

You cheated? I'm still jealous. You're in a zone where you can cheat? I've actually got a few tomatoes out in the garden now, been putting out a few more every few days. I'm between the downpours. I can't believe all this rain! It has POURED everyday since 20th. Ten days of rain. It was bright and sunny this morning and I was cautiously helpful and literally, I grabbed some nasturtiums in jiffy pots to put out, stepped onto the front steps, and it started sprinkling then the heavens just opened. Maybe this is an omen not to plant too early. lol My frost day is April 10th.

I do not call buying potted plants of any kind "cheating" I call it a wise move.--But when I can, I get plants from my dad who grows his own---he starts all his plants in his greenhouse every February--and if I can be patient enough I get all I can use. But since we moved I have less garden space--(oh well) But if it does not stop raining none of this will matter--a person cannot plant in mud---can they?? we have been getting just enough dry days to make me think I can get into my garden (& it is even raised) and then it rains again-----:(

Thanks, JunieGirl.
The only problem with buying tomato plants is that the choice is terribly limited.
It's always beefsteaks, cherries and Celebrities.
I for one would freak out and/or faint if I saw a Cherokee Purple plant or any other heirloom, for sale in a garden center.

One time buying a store tomato turned out to be a VERY good thing-it was my first Cherokee Purple, and I thought wow, if a store one is that good, the home grown must be outta this world !
