I was browsing through my cookbook and saw pictures of B.L.A.T's and I've been craving them ever since. Why can't someone grow good toms and ship them to me year round? Anyone else beginning to get the craving?

Do you know fresh home grown tomatoes come in the FALLL TIME, like just before WINTERRRRRRRR??? heeehehehehe, I swear us gardener's are masochistic... Planting seeds in the spring and dreamin' of fall harvest just to get that red, ripe, delicious, tangy, acidy, sweet, juicy tomato.. fresh from the garden.. *ahhhhhh man, you two have got me wantin' one now..*

I don't think it was very polite to remind me that my seeds won't be bearing anything delicious and mouthwatering until the fall. Now that makes me want my toms even MORE which makes my craving now Agony Infinitely worse. lol

I hear you on that.. I just amaze myself sooooo much, when I am finnnnnally out of winter here and starting my seeds, waiting for the over night temps to be warm enough not to freeze my seeds over night out in the greenhouse... And I think when I plant those tomato seeds, I am thinkin' of harvest time, wishing it would be here NOW....... And then I realize, if it were now, I'd be headin' back into winter again... I have been getting some vine ripened tomatoes from the grocery store here, and if I let them sit for a good bit, they finally ripen red and aren't so hard.. and they are reasonably close *I did say reasonably not totally* And I can still have my summer!!! YAY!!!!

We had just had really good weather here the last couple of months. Been in the 70's most days the last 2 weeks, it has almost hit 80. The night time temps have been in the 60's.
But wait until we start having those 100+ days this summer!!!!

You'll have to figure yourself out some shade cloth contraption Pat.. Brain~Drain here, but someone, new, just posted a picture for me of a raised bed he did..*and I'm short on time, put will find his picture* but you could incorporate something like that, and shade those tomatoes in the scalding heat/sun... (just and idea to think about)

(just and idea to think about) It got so hot and dry last year everything shut down, after the heat was over some things started producing again. I dread to see those days again, sometimes they last for weeks. When you wake up and it's already 85* you know it's going to be another hot one!!!! (But it does make the peppers and Orka grow good.)

I opened a new jar of homemade salsa. So it's like eating last years tomatoes now. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the recipe doesn't age well--it's pretty salty now. This year I'll be trying some new recipes.

Rain and mud here Weezie... and frost a couple of nights ago. Way to soon for tomatoes. :( I ventured back to my garden yesterday... And good thing they are in raised beds' The water is up past my ankles... And it's still draining from the snowbanks into my property here.. I won't dry out 'til end of April/May...

Plus the way my yard slopes, I get all the melting from the road ways too...
Nothing I can do about it...
*I have a picture (somewhere's lost in my menagerie`) of my oldest son when he was about 3 or 4 and he's got his favorite push behind tractor... And he's runnnnnnnnnnnnnning thru the "new stream" in our back yard, doing rooster tails in the water... it was sooo high up, cause there was sooooooooooo much water...
But I am still dyin' for a ripe tomato now... *rollseyes and cries*

Yes, me too! My seedlings (28 varities, 3 of each) are on their 2nd transplant and I can't wait. May 1 is my date for planting outside. I can't wait. Those tomatoe's at the grocery store are just horrible. Nothing like the first ripe one right off the vine! I don't share that one, I just pick it and pop it right into my big fat mouth! LOL joyce

Oh my goodness...all this talk of Tomatoes!!!! This is going to be my first garden in the new place. I'm setting up 4 raised beds in the coming weeks, and the excitement is almost unmaintainable. Last year I had a volunteer tomato plant that, all things considered (terrible soil, crazy location), did pretty well. They were little tomatoes, and I harvested some of them and let them turn red in the kitchen. Some I left on the vine to ripen, and a few of them I threw to the critters of my backyard. Anyway..I am ever so excited... As far as puddles, I don't have any children yet, but I DO have a dog who absolutely LOVES splashing in puddles. Right now, my poor backyard is VERY wet. But the snow is all gone. I think it's all in my basement now.

Hi there Nick. Raised beds will be awesome. Flooding in the basement? ICK! Hope nothing got lost. Luckily, nothing was lost. Our basement is pretty empty, minus the water..lol. And all things considered, it could be a lot worse. It's several inches. I'll be buying a utility pump soon.

I bet. Amazing what you find out about a house in the first year or two you own it. Somehow it seems that you learn a LOT more negative about your house in that time. Funny how that works.

I've just started the 2nd repot on my biggest ones and the last are just popping through. The biggest should be ready by May. If I can wait that long. Have been buying a few Campari's for the salads and BLT's. Just couldn't wait for mine. Jay

You cheated? I'm still jealous. You're in a zone where you can cheat? I've actually got a few tomatoes out in the garden now, been putting out a few more every few days. I'm between the downpours. I can't believe all this rain! It has POURED everyday since 20th. Ten days of rain. It was bright and sunny this morning and I was cautiously helpful and literally, I grabbed some nasturtiums in jiffy pots to put out, stepped onto the front steps, and it started sprinkling then the heavens just opened. Maybe this is an omen not to plant too early. lol My frost day is April 10th.

I do not call buying potted plants of any kind "cheating" I call it a wise move.--But when I can, I get plants from my dad who grows his own---he starts all his plants in his greenhouse every February--and if I can be patient enough I get all I can use. But since we moved I have less garden space--(oh well) But if it does not stop raining none of this will matter--a person cannot plant in mud---can they?? we have been getting just enough dry days to make me think I can get into my garden (& it is even raised) and then it rains again-----:(

Thanks, JunieGirl. The only problem with buying tomato plants is that the choice is terribly limited. It's always beefsteaks, cherries and Celebrities. I for one would freak out and/or faint if I saw a Cherokee Purple plant or any other heirloom, for sale in a garden center.

One time buying a store tomato turned out to be a VERY good thing-it was my first Cherokee Purple, and I thought wow, if a store one is that good, the home grown must be outta this world !

Juniegirl, Well, I just planted in mud. We got about 2 inches of rain last night and it POURED all morning. Then, just at the time of my daughter's birthday party, it cleared up and warmed up. After the party, I snuck out and planted some of my leggier tomatoes. They have soda bottle top on them to help fight wind, rain, and chills. Although it hasn't been lower than mid-40's since the very beginning of March. I hope they will be okay, because they just weren't getting enough sunlight inside.

Well this year I'm growing Sweet William Tomatoes. I think they are one of the sweeter varieties. At least I think they are suppose to be. I've never grown them before. The 4 I started for myself are already 2 feet tall. Transplanting them is going to be a pain by the time it warms up enough to do it. I haven't had any rain to speak of and the back garden has to be hand watered. The ones I just started for a friend already have their true leaves. I'm looking forward to seeing how they taste.

Tammy, Do you know what we used to do up on the hill for water? *We didn't have a hose either* but we got long tall bins and let rain fall into them and we watered by hand from the bins..
*just an idea.. but can you leave some tubs or something of the like around some of the area's you would water?
Or would someone steal it?????*

Started my seeds last Thursday so the obsession over germination rates has now begun. God willing, the weather will improve and I'll be able to plant them in the ground before the end of May. My earlies should give me ripe tomatoes by the beginning of August. If we don't get a freak snow storm in October like we did last year, I'll still be harvesting until just after Halloween. Weezie, I've started 80 varieties, you should really find a reason to come visit and grab a few plants in May. I most definitely WILL have extras. Cheers, Julianna

You know, someday, that would be a fun day to that... I KNOW IT WOULD!!! But right now, my plate is sooooooooooo filled *and it ain't with tomatoes right now* that I am almost thinkin' of not doing a garden this year.. ***ALMOST mind you, I know that when the springdays actually get here, I"ll be out there doing something..*** but it's never ending right now... I always get warm fuzzy's when you still ask me.. and hope you never stop asking.. One of these days'...*maybe the rate I am going I should say years* (wink~wink) Is Carly, Christina, or Penny in your neck of the woods??

Carly for sure is in my neck of the woods then. I'm in North York, one of several distinct Toronto neighbourhoods. Ontario's a huge province, the other 2 could be close, then again, they could be as far from me as Atlanta is from Bangor.
Cheers, Julianna
