This spring we seem to have a woodpecker in the neighborhood. I have no idea where the nest is...it may actually be in the tree right behind our backyard. I tried to get a picture of this little woodpecker while he was on the utility pole pecking away. My camera is not so good though. I'll try again and if I get a good one I'll post it. I like birds but this woodpecker is sorta annoying. In the morning and evening he's pecking away. It's so funny how such a little bird can make such a big noise.

Not only am I The Bird Man here, Woodpeckers are my specialty. I am in Tennessee so am not certain what kind of woodpecker you might have. We do not have the same type of woodpeckers as you, but I know most of them in the US, although I haven't seen ALL of them in the wild. If you can post even a poor picture I can often tell what it is.

I think there's only about 20 species woodpeckers.I've had one live in my yard before.some of them have regular areas/ranges they live in permenately.I've seen a pileated woodpecker.(awesome.huge bird.ya can't miss him)hey wanna hear something funny? They have a tounge like Gene Simmons..for eating tasty bugs. They work at making a nest cavity. They use wood chips they make when doing the hole& use the chips for nesting material. Both parents sit on the eggs& care for the young.2 clutches a season.I've had a red headed woodpecker live twice in my yard, but he feeds regularly here. And he eats bugs out of my metal sheds roof...which is metal too.sometimes I put in Twisted Sister for him.(bang your head!)somewhere I have pictures of him at feeder.I have a wire feeder thing that he eats from but he'll hang upside down from feeder as well as upsidedown on tree eating away. mine like acorns.beechnuts cherries chokecherries grains corn peanuts peanutbutter(natural by skippy or smuckers)
I agree it is sorta annoying when he nails that shed...I hollar out its metal all the time.it's in the mornings mostly too.

We have Mucho Pileateds here in Tennessee. I see them almost every day, just not in my yard. ALL Woodpeckers have INCREDIBLY long barbed tongues. In my yard I get Downys, an occasional Red-Bellied, and in Winter Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers.
