I was kind of suprised to see two of my clumps of chives are developing buds. Is it normal for them to do that this time of year?

Yep, mine do every year..

Once they flower though,
I think the chives toughen up a bit..
*there's still edible though*

And if you watch the flower,
when it starts to decline and make seeds..
It'll finally open up and you'll have a bunch
of tiny, shiney black seeds in there..

And if you just let that flower stalk fall
over to the ground where ever it lays,
next spring you'll have a new chive clump started..
I have about 8 clumps from doing that..

Thanks Weezie, I'd like to harvest some of the seeds. Just so I have some when ever this silly move takes place.

I just wanted to say---somewhere I saw that you were asking about chive seeds & the reason you were wondering was you were going to move---WELL find a big pot & dig up your chive plant & just take it with you.---( disturb the roots as little as possible.) I even kept mine in said container for about 18 to 24 months, as I had to dig it up in the fall but we did not move until late December---then I did not have a garden the first season. But my chive plant is alive & well and living in my new garden-- :clps: Good Luck!!

I have two clumps in pots/containers..
and they've done fine..
*maybe not quite as prolific as the one's
in the ground.. but still survive well!!!*

My clump that overwintered outside is looking much nicer than the one inside. The one outside the individual blades are much thicker. And it has more buds on it than the one inside.

Chives definately need a cool/cold period...

I am sorry for not making myself clear---I was not suggesting tkhooper bring in his chives---I was giving him another way to take his chives with him when he moved---and yes the plant does not do so well indoors but it survives and then can be transplanted to one's new garden.

Chives do well all year in my zone 9, without a lot of chilling. (Although they chilled this year). They bloom in Feb- Mar, heavily. and then intermittently throughout the year.

Chives hardiness zones are: 4-9.

I understood you june. It's just that I have many house plants and would prefer to move as many of my plants as possible as seeds lol. I'm not all that coordinated. And I have a picture of arriving at the new place and having plants and dirt strewn all over the place.

I am zone 6---& I put my potted chive plant in the basement(it was cool there) under a west window & basically forgot about it unless I was occasionally watering it---it looked pretty bad--alot of yellow--but I planted it anyway & it is alive & well now, & living in my new homes garden-------

I am thinking about planting some chives in my garden. I have lavendar and I have rosemary, sweet basil and spearmint potted.

I also have 3 chive plants outside. They get a big trim after they go to seed and I place the flower tops wherever I want the plant to grow. And actually, I rarely ever eat them. Just ornimental flowers to me.

I just moved mine a month or so ago. root/dirt clump and all. it did fine.not even any shock cause I didn't take dirt from its roots.mine is for looking at too. I wouldn't dare eat it since we got the dog.:) :) :)LOL

I eat my chives--luckily I have them planted in my raised veggie garden, & "Dante`" leaves it alone.
