I was just guessing......One time I was 37, then something happened.. blush

Peach trees, see if you can find the freestone type.. That means when you bite it, will come off the stone easily.. Others dont.. No harm in trying.
I eat blueberrys almost daily......strawberris .. all frozen.
Peaches are so expensive to buy ......Maryland is where we get ours.. Someone goes down there ..Better tasting.

YOu wont regret trying to raise fruits and veggies.

back at "the farm", when the kids were home, I used to do a lot of the growing & freezing of fruits----and some of my veggies too, but now with it just the 2 of us home, I dont't so much---But I did start blackberries here last fall--they may not have survived though--if not I will replace them with plants from local nurseries. I am not fond of the little critters that I got from the catelog.

nothing better than Blackberry seedless jam.--
*I press the berries up against the mesh drain bag I have. It forces some of the skin thru the bag along with the juices, which in turn makes my jelly spread like a jam---wonderful.

Yeah, I have a freezer.. and that is what I want to do.. freeze some.. lots. Can you can them too.. or mostly freeze? I have never done either.. so this should be interesting.

I am not so sure about raspberries.. though I LOVE Red Raspberry preserves I get from the store.. I guess I am just going on raspberry flavored candy.. I don't know as I have ever had a fresh raspberry.

Junie, why don't you like the stuff you got from catalogs? I am just afraid I won't be able to find much around here.. at nurserys.. though I might I guess.. I need to start checking huh? When are you supposed to plant all these fruit bushes and trees? Soon?

I've just started canning and so far I love it. It isn't much work for me because I'm only one person. But, where I get together with others and do it and we do bushels then it gets to be work. But, it is also fun.

Once I get settled and hook up my little freezer I'm going to try freezing mixed veggies for stews and hardy soups. It's so convinent.

I love canning as well, the smells of the spices and vinegars are strong but wonderful. We always post a few canning threads when it's time to share recipes and show off our work grin

In my previous life I canned and froze vegetables and made frozen strawberry jam.

Blackberries, I love them, but in a cobbler sometimes they are very tart and many people think that ruins the cobbler. I don't like strawberry cobbler. Warming the strawberries changes the taste for me.

I've never made pickles dodge but I'd like to try your recipe

Dodge: I just used the Blackberry JELLY recipe in a box of Sure*Jell.--3 cups of juice.--I have frozen juice so I can make fresh in the winter as well.

But when I put the berries in the bag and set it to drain like they say to, I take a wooden spoon & press down on them after awhile. This forces the skins out of the bag as well as all the juice.--I also then take a spatula and scrape all the 'goodness' from the bottom of the bag and add that to my juice measurement.--Then I proceed with the regular jelly recipe. In the end it will spread like jam because of the skins pushed thru the bag when you are force extracting the juice. (was I clear?)

Pinkhourse of course: The reason I was not happy with the catalogs was the plants were so small. You can order from a catalog, just make sure you order from a 'good' mail order establishment.--I have a few I would not order from----If you like I can PM you

I think cobblers are for old people since I see them go to Marie Calender's for apple cobbler. Somebody convince me that anyone can eat a cobbler.

my son (he's 20) LOVES cobbler. peach cobbler is the current favorite, but he'll eat apple or any kind of berry too. i grew up eating cobbler, it was my favorite childhood dessert. i wouldn't call it an "old folks" food.
