Those look so healthy Diane! You should be proud!
They are nice and full and green and and and...

Mine are coming along. Still in smallish pots as I don't have any more room for larger pots indoors. They mostly have 1 healthy branch growing each, but I'll take that! I have 3 that made it, and 1 that lost all its leaves but is still hanging on.

Here is a pink one that I just repotted. It was a cutting I took last spring and kept inside overwinter.

mine are all doing well, happy to say I haven't lost a single one that i rooted last winter, though some of them are still in 4" pots and haven't grown much. I've read that people who bought brugs in 3.5" pots had them out and they grew feets during the summer (some got up to 6') so I'm hoping mine will do that!

Hi Diane,
You can count me in as a Brug lover and grower. I experimented last fall with potted brugs. We have a few freezing nights that I covered the potted brugs with sheets. Also had some small ones in small pots that I could take inside. All my potted brugs made it and are doing fine. Having a slug problem though and have been experimenting with natural deterrants.(ph?) rolz I've been in the garden lately at midnight with flashlight in hand and learning quite a bit as to what's going on out there late at night. lol shock

I have three brugs in ground in front garden. Two came back, the other bit the dust. I had been having troubles with that one so I'm not too surprised.

Love those Brugs! flwr

They are huge with trumpet like flowers.. Should grow easy in calif.
I had a rough time with mine, someone sent cutttings and they went ape.. Then the white flys attacked and I had to take it to the basement.

They are nice.

No not walmart.
Most folks on here have gotten cuttings from some one else.

THat is how I got mine.. But I think I have one growing from seeds . Takes really long .

I have a friend in california , i will ask her if she raises them. Let you know if she does.

I got 2 pick up truck loads of plants from her last year and 4 car loads of stuff.

Is the banana tree same as the banana plant?

I would do it if I was you. I always tell folks, I run a hospital for sick plants, and they give me theirs.. Ha ha

Can't beat the price...........

I stopped there and ask her could I get a start off her banana tree and she said sure and told me she'd thin her plants and give me more too. So ever since then I see her about every other month and she loads my car up. the day I got the truck loaded she took me to meet her mom and I got plants out of her mom's yard

emde, I saw Brugs on sale at the Home Depot last week for $29.95. Aren't you in California? What, zone 9? Sounds like you can grow them. Anyway, I was surprised to see Brugs for sale at the Home Depot. They were a substantial size too. They better be for $29.95 huh? lol

Enrique, I'll send you some cutting if you can wait a while, maybe fall? mine are still very small even after being inside all winter, I don't have much light for them or space for bigger pots. I had a packet of brug seeds you can try but they're from last year or year before. I never got around to sowing them.

Diane, and other bruggies lol I was wondering, I have my brugs out now (it's 21*C around 70*F and the nights can dip down to 5*C, can I keep them outside all night or should I bring them in?

Enrique, the seeds you've found are daturas, not brugmansias. To tell the difference, brug flowers hang down, and datura flowers bloom upwards. I sent you some white daturas with your package of seeds...are the ones you're looking at doubles? Daturas can reseed readily, especially D. stramonium can get invasive (aka jimson weed). Do be careful, both plants are dangerous...deadly but so cool!

I'm confused 99% of the time lol you would die laughing if you heard about all the mistakes I made when I first started in the garden lol I sent you seeds of both species: white datura, datura la fleur lilac, and brugmansia (white x white and pink) Did you get them yet, or is Canada post slower than ever?

No problemo! I haven't moved them out yet, but we've had 45F nights for the past week. My mom's always saying the time to move everything out is after Victoria Day long weekend (third week of May) si I guess they'll go out then, thanks!

Beth, I'm certainly no expert on brugs, but from what I know, they should be trimmed in the fall and that's when cuttings are available

I have all of mine outside except four which will be going out tonight. It dipped to 4*C (~40*F?) and I covered two and moved the rest in a 'gravel' bed between our house and the neighbour's (the space is about 5' wide) and they did fine. I haven't planted any in the ground yet but will later tonight. Anyone have any suggesstions as to what looks good with brugs? I know I shouldn't grow tomatoes, or datura because they can host some devastating diseases. I'm assuming I shouldn't grow any other nightshade family plants around them...anyone know? I plan on maybe putting elephant's ears between them or castor beans.

Good advice about not planting daturas next to tomatoes.I'm going to seperate my brugs from my daturas from my tomatoes.

anyone have any updates? I'll post some pics later. I put one brug in the leaf mould pile in mostly shade to see how it's going to grow, and the rest in full sun. I've noticed that the ones in shade have been bitten badly by bugs and there are little holes all over the leaves, and the ones in full sun have little to no damage. The charles grimaldi is look pretty yellow but the new growth is all nice lush green. I threw a handful of epsom salts before school one day and when I came home, the plants all looked much greener, so I guess I need more. I also bought some fertilizer sticks (10-30-10) that were meant for tomatoes, but I figured as long as the middle number is high, it will promote flowering. I had a total of 13/14 plants growing inside throughout winter, all from cuttings. I didn't have enough space in the garden and I was only able to plant six. I gave them away, and my parents were telling me to sell them to make a few extra bucks to use during the summer. I would've but it didn't seem right to be selling something that I was given as a gift, so I figured I was spreading the brug bug to other people lol

Diane - thought I'd show you one of your brugs today - Charles Grimaldi planted in the pond garden next to the adirondack chair.

I haven't used any epsom salt, Barb. I probably should!

The spots you see on the last one is splattered dirt from all the rain we've been having...

remember when you plant in ground they love having the soil admended with compost and rich soil,, lots of feeds and lots of water, they do seem to like full sun,, I have the same problem as Kenny Shaded ones give bugs meals,, full sun look better grow taller and produce more blooms, and Watch for spider mites,!,,

Lynne your look like mine did when I first planted my starts, IF you have fish emulsion water it in they love that too!!! I did and by September they were tall and blooming,,

Here is my Unnamed pink it hasn't set buds yet,, last year it was end of Sept before it bloomed and continued untill I had to cut it back in the fall,, My starter of Dr, suess is struggling very hard to stay alive,, He doen't seem to want to grow,, and I want him to soooooooo badly! the rest of the ones that were in ground last year are just as big as the unnamed pink with the exception of Charles Grimaldi,, he is getting bushier but not so tall approx 1/3 the height of the rest of them,, again I think it all has to do with a very dry spring and summer,, and about 4 weeks ago they were all a bugs buffet too Kenny,, I took lemonjoy(1TBLsp and a few shakes of Hotsause put it in a water mister filled with warm water and sprayed the leaves under and over,, you can see in this picture all the new healthy growth at the top,, I removed a lot of the leaves and it seemed to have shot straight up after that,( a hint I got from Cindy) Yep I just removed a damaged large leaf here and there and UP it grew,,

Thought I'd update with pictures of the 2 of mine that are doing the best.
They are getting nice and tall with large leaves, but no signs of flower buds yet.

Here's the one by the pond that's in front of Jimmy's cannas
[Linked Image]

And the one by the corner of the front of the house - gets morning sun til mid-day. Something has been eating the leaves - don't know what?
[Linked Image]

I just noticed that they really have different leaf edges - not sure which one is which type - didn't look at the tags in that awful heat we had today!

I'm going to continue in this thread it hasn't reached it's max' yet , and I started this to keep record of this first year after over wintering in ground last fall,, thumbup
as a refresher This spring mine were growing really well,, until last month shock ,, I had to cut them back due to a major infestation of spider mites it was aweful, boohoo , I destroyed all I cut off and treated the remaining stocks, and everything around them , cleaned up the soil & replenished with compost and nutrients and the leaves have come back,, In this picture you can see where I had cut the branches way back and the new leaves came back very nicely! grin clap

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

and finally I have buds. clap ... this is on the snowcone brug

They look fantastic Diane! Once again, your gardening talent shines through with the plants wanting to grow for you. I'm thinking that you might still have time to see them all bloom since your growing season is longer there?

I'll have to look up the snowcone flower - I'm not familiar with that one?

Buds are starting to open open on a brug,, I had believed it was the snowcone well I thought it was but the bloom is yellow,, it may be the pale yellow brug ,, it didn't bloom last year at all, but then again,, it takes a couple of days for the bloom to achieve it's true color after blooming.

mine never really die back all the way I cut them within 6 inches from the ground right after the first hard frost then cover with a bucket of leaves, until late feb,,,,

For you ....... You can dig them up * if in ground* and pot up for the winter,, remember IF they are in ground in the spring and summer they will bloom better for you,,*
IF in a pot they will be fine to bring on in,,,,, good light on them they will soak the sun up happily,,,,,, and will probably loss a few leaves,,

Hummers are still here I put a new window feeder on my bedroom window and one has discovered it,,, I will leave it there all winter for the HB's south window, under an eve,,, so it will be protected from the cold or freezing!,,
