I have to share this story about my hubby and a hummer....I think you will all think it's cute!
My hubby is a firefighter. He and his partner were at the station one day, when they went out into the station bay to do some cleanup. Well, somehow a humming bird had gotten caught inside the last time the bay doors were up and it was frantically trying to find a way out. About the time they noticed it fluttering around, it ran out of steam and just dropped! Hubby decides that he's got to try to save this poor little thing, so he mixes up some sugar water, takes an ink pen apart and uses the outer shell like a straw (sticking it down into the mixture, holding his thumb over the top and holding the mix in that way). He picks up the little bird and it starts drinking from the make-shift feeder. After a couple of minutes, it starts to perk up, so hubby takes it outside and gives it more sugar. A few minutes after that, the bird had regained his strength and flew off.
It's funny, of all the medical calls hubby has worked, of all the people that are still among us because of his help, he is the most proud of saving that little hummer!

25????? That's not right!!!! It's hot here today! Pushing 80!
You got it! It was 75 here the other day. Today's high is 41! Some places in MN are getting 6-12" of snow today. We are supposed to get a little but thankfully not that much! Highs in the 40s all weekend and then in the 50s next week! It is supposed to be spring and our average temps right now should be in the 60s. Hope they get here soon! We got teased with a couple of 70 degree days!
BTW...I currently have only one feeder out for the hummers, but have a couple more I would like to put out. I think I remember reading somewhere that you have to keep them a certain distance apart. Is this true? And how far apart do the feeders need to be from each other? I would like to put the other 2 out on my front porch with the other one, but need to know aout the spacing first.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR SNOW.. WE ARE DUE SOME NEXT WEEKEND.
annette, he should be proud of his skill with the bird. i mean, he has all that training for humans but had to rely on instinct and skill and ingenuity for the bird he gets a gold star from me for that one!
Still NO hummers here......but mine usually don't come until the first of July, after the young have fledged and left the nest. By then, my red Cannas will be fully up and in bloom' and THEY bring the hummers in by droves.

EARTH FIRST! (we'll strip-mine the OTHER planets later.)
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...........Saw my first hummer today about 2pm......I only put up the feeder about 12 and presto. SUCCESS..HA HA HA HA HA. JUST SUGAR WATER DID IT .. CHEAP 3 DOLLAR FEEDER. Now I regained my citizenship.. :ding:
NEVER buy an expensive feeder. For some reason birds like the cheap ones best. Three of my hummer feeders cost 97 cents. The other two were $3.00 each.

I finally put out my feeders last week---around the 16th---and the next day my DH saw a hummer---wanted to know if it was my "pete" from last year---and then wanted to know if I had put up my tomato cage next to my feeder for t hem to rest on--(usually only pete did so)
last year they were here by May 1
So Thorn--I have a question--- How long do Hummingbirds live and if they live more than 1 season---do they return to old haunts???
waiting for my orioles now----they are usually 1 or 2 days behind the hummers--

I have read where the Hummers live for many years---and tonight I am almost positive that I saw the Hummer I named "Pete" last year---it was just about dark out---so I will have to wait unil I see him during the day.----at least for now I am hopeful it was him.
