I have this plant that popped up in my flower bed this spring, and I am unsure what it is. I thought at first it might be a blackberry bush, but I'm not too sure. It has thorns, and the leaves are rather rough in texture. There aren't any blooms of any kind on it, and I've left it in my bed just in case it is something that I want to keep, but at the same time it is killing off some of my calla lilies. The area it is in is boggy, and stays wet most of the time (S Louisiana). It's in an area of partial sunlight. I hope all of this info helps. If anyone can help, please let me know if it is a weed or another kind of plant.

Many thanks,
CajunMama

I hope someone from your area of the country can help you with this one. I haven't a clue. The birds sure can leave up some nice gifts sometimes. And other times not-so-nice ones.

I have had birds kindly leave unwanted plants in this same exact area, but this time I was hoping this is a much wanted plant. But I would sure like to know what it is before it gets too big.

Is the stem hairy?

Well, it depends on what "hairy" is. It has thorns, though they are not hard like those of a rose bush. The thorns are fairly soft. They are not too dense on the stem, but they are not sparse enough that you could put you fingers on the stem without touching any....I guess you could say that it was hairy.

Tomorrow I will go outside and take another pic of the stem and get a better look.

we have something that grows wild here (zone 9). It looks very similar to your picture. The thorns are like you described, but it is also kinda 'hairy'. Like if you grab it to pull it up, if a thorn doesn't get you the hairy prickles will get you. What I'm describing doesn't bloom any berries or flowers. It's just a weed, and pretty agressive. Gosh, I'd hate to tell you the wrong thing though. I'll go out later, find one, and count the leaves.

cajunmama, I think it's a dew berry vine...or like jiffymouse said black berry vine...people call them both. They are fine in a wooded area or along a fence, but I pull them up when they come up in my beds. too agressive and choke out other things. they're great for making jelly, pies, juice.
here's some pics of my dew berries.

here's the bush

Wow, thanks! That is exactly what it looks like. thumbup clap shots

I'd love to keep it, but not in my flower bed. Does anyone know if it likes sun? I would like to put it along a fence on the west side of my place. Also, does it transplant well? why I've transplanted black berry vines in years past, and they didn't do too well. tears

I don't know about transplanting a vine, their roots are so dang deep. what about taking a cutting?
