In the heat of the summer they will stop blooming and begin again when it gets cooler in the fall.
Sooooooo I will dead head every other one, and start collecting seeds,, and let seeds fall on their own,, Hopefully I will have them again and again . I planted them with a mixture of home compost, rich potting soil, and humus/ manure mixture, all well mixed within natural ground soil,, and watered in with super thrive. In a week I will give them a feeding of bloom burst.

hi--I am looking for the white soprano--found a white one at wal-mart but didn't buy it as it was fairly tall. I think the white soprano is more 'compact' is that right??/
I have the crescendo orange & the compact purple

My friend, Myrna, went to visit her sister on Saturday after we went to the perennial nursery in the morning. She has found a terrific nursery down there in NJ, and this was her second trip. I had asked her to get some purple osteos for me - she got 12 small pots for $15 - not bad!!! The small ones I bought here were $3 each. She gave them to me today, but the boss was there this last time and charged her $20 for the same 12 plants, so that's what I paid - not bad really - still much cheaper than what I paid. They are going to be taller than the ones I have already - I might plant them over at my mom's - I always plant her rock garden and others for Mother's Day.
That's white seprano isn't it?? I can't tel real well,, is the Center a rich blue color???
I'm Hooked,, I think I saw another one at the same nursery,, discovering it after I got home and looked them up on the net,, At the nursery, It wasn't with the other ostreo's I think it was called Palmo?? something like that,, I'm going back to the nursery to see!!!!!

did you get them planted? Pictures?
Diane, do you think mine is the white sorprano? If so I'll save seeds.
Yes Sheri I do believe yours are the white soprano. Nope I haven't found it yet,, well on the internet yes,, but I don't want to order them on the net,
I caught birds eating the seeds from mine today,, I was letting them dry up,, I guess early bird gets the seeds,, I need to be a little faster getting out there and harvesting the seeds,,

the lilac spoon is not flowering yet--but the other 2 are--so hopefully I will have pictures soon ----

Carol I started to let mine dry up completely on the stem,, just today I opened one up (<-it was brown and very dry),, inside was 4 seeds ,, dark , semi flat, kinda cone shaped, definitely seeds ,, on the same plant I had missed collecting and seeds were on the ground, so YEP self seeds,, I have dead headed and saved those , <-I've opened a few of them BUT the seeds are not as developed as the seeds that I open that were still on the stem,. SOOOOOOO What I'm going to do is wait on the stem heads to dry and turn brown then I'll collect!

thanks-- the lilac spoon I found at the nursery over by valarie's house.
---the other was at a nursery in a larger neighboring town--it is between my home & hers---they also had big containers of these for a lot more of money--i decided that i could wait for mine to grow---

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
[size:17pt]Loooooooooooooookie Diane!!! The first bloom on the spoon osteospermum that you sent to me!!! It's pretty small - about the size of a silver dollar right now. More blooms to follow!
It definitely looks like it reverted back to one of the parents, Carol. I'm sorry you don't have the spoon shape any more, but I still think it's a very pretty plant.
I was at my DD's house today and she was saying how she planted the sppon osteospermum I bought her in with her wild flowers and now she could not find it.--so I found it for her amd guess what?/ it looked exactly like mine did when I took the last picture.--NO spoon petals to be found.---I do not think heres ever bloomed witha spoon flower---this is frustrating for sure.

That is so odd, Carol!!! I will keep close tabs on the one Diane sent me - so far I've only had the 1 bloom that is still there, but there are more buds to open soon.
Very odd indeed For both yours and Your daughters to have done that, I hope you saved the seeds from the spoon flower that was there!
Lynne The plant I divided with you still blooms the Purple spoon*I have that one in all shade,, that is one of the first ones I planted. The rest of all I had planted after that are no longer blooming as they were planted in 1/2 shade,, Big mistake probably ,, it just too hot here right now
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Diane - mine gets morning to mid-day sun and then afternoon shade - the plant looks very healthy (knock on wood!) but the flowers take a long time to open.
had to bring this back to the front,, because mine are coming back after a hot dry summer,,,, the purple silver and pink eye have died all the way no trace of them left,, but the large white spoon osteospernum has recovered and growing and spreading out,, I had read that in cooler weather it will rebloom No signs of bud yet but definitely coming back*refer to 1st post in thread*
as well as the purple spoon
the white soprano never died back all the way and is on the recovery as well,, I Hope(*keeping fingers crossed*) that I will have blooms ~ at least a few of them before too long,,
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
I forgot to Post the name,, Cream Grande' Yellow eye spoon in the second post at the beginning of this thread is how they looked in full bloom in the spring(May 6 months ago,, But they stayed green ,,, again,, the tag said they will not bloom in the heat of the summer but most likely bloom again in the cool of the Fall!!!! and they are,, I promise I won't post another picture until a lot of them are in bloom
Btw I took this picture when I got home from work at 6:40 pm I hate that it gets dark sooooo early
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
all bloomed now,,,,,, I've read that these can be rooted from cutting,, so I'm going to try it as well as try to gets seeds,, I want this again next spring
gonna try cuttings from this one too,,
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
My craze for Osterspermum continues into this spring of 09! this is the orange symphony Osterpermum
Heyyyyyyy Carol!!
WOW !!!! Diane----simply beautiful!!!! I so hope my melon Osteospurmum re-seeded itself---I wish I had of made myself a map---I would just drop a few seeds that I saved in the correct places.
