It was pretty nasty, power went off and ruined firefox, lost all my favourites. I'm still rebuilding, but it was raining today and I was soaked walking to school, so I guess my plants got a good soaking. Not going to do much today, because I have band tonight and it's going to take up all evening.

storm's broken and its full sunshine! and the hot spell is gone too! Back to a night low of 15*c and high of 25*c tomorrow. we have our last concert of the year in the courtyard of our school and were afraid we would've had to bring it into the caf.

Finally the rain fell with it - the gardens got a good watering there.

The storms seem to be over now - how about you, down the east coast, Tamara?

Well, the rain is never ending and we are under a thunderstorm watch for this evening. It has warmed up though to a big 18*C(65*F). The sun has been peeking out between the rain today..

We lost power earlier for a bit. It has calmed down again though.

It's back to normal temps now, and a bit cooler. The heat wave made many things blooms...this is the earliest I've seen roses and daylilies bloom! A week or two ago I was thinking 'shouldn't my arums be blooming...the site said in spring' and monday, I noticed two huge buds, yesterday I fully opened and one half opened. I haven't checked yet but I think today both should be fully opened. I'll have to grab pictures....they're Arum italicum aka lords and ladies, or large cuckoo pint

There used to be a weeping siberian pea there, but it suckered from the base with upright siberian pea shoots and they took it down. I have to say not bad fro people who hate flowers, but the mistake they made: coleus and geraniums in full sun, and transplanted blooming celosia (celosia resent transplanting and stop growing once they roots reach a blockage...that's why you're supposed to direct seed celosia)

Great pics Kenny. Glad to see your parents have joined you in the 'planting' as well.

Now I know why my celosia never did well...I stopped buying them years ago.

I have a white bleeding heart division that I got as a housewarming present. If your not in a hurry for that plant maybe I could get you a cutting this fall? I'm not sure how they propogate yet.

And great information on the Celosia. I plant them in biodegradeable pots and then really water the pot well when I transplant so it will fall apart. It's worked well so far. direct sowing doesn't work for me. I'm not sure why.

Oh, I was thinking that I'd let it grow and then try and take a division with the root already there. Does it work like that? That appears to be what I have from my friend.

I have no luck trying to root plants in water. That is unless they are purple passion plants.

Thanks Tammy, I really appreciate it! I've heard of people doing cuttings (leaf and petiole) and I've heard of root cuttings, though I must admit I've never had luck with either method. I can't seem to get anything to root except brugs.

So for the past while, I've notice on of the brugs I planted has these really yellow leaves, but the new growth is a lush green. One day before school, I put a handful of epsom salts around the base of each plant, and by the time I got back from school, everything had greened up. Now, the leaves are still green, but not as green and lush as possible, so I'm going to go out later and buy a box of epsom salts. Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate: magnesium sulfate with seven molecules of water attached to each molecule. Magnesium is an essential element (though not as important as N-P-K) it is essential for chlorophyll, and therefore photosynthesis.

I also have some tomato fertilizer spikes (8-24-8) which is supposed to feed for up to 8 weeks, so if I put them in now (I've been procrasting for two weeks now) I'll just need to refertilize after I come back from the exchange.

my brugs have yellow leaves too. I figured it's from the dry, hot weather. Watering with a hose just isn't the same as rain.

I have a 'white' on the grow right now - the amaryllis - there's about 5 inches of leaf up on it - won't be long.

I bought them late fall so I'd have them for Christmas . . . didn't do much.

But I thought well, why not have them for summer?

I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Great attitude Carly, it doesn't matter when they bloom as long as they bloom lol

The garden center across the street has plants on sale now and I might pull a few buck from the moeny I saved for the exchange to pick up some plants. They have standard fuchsias and abutilons for just $13 when places like walmart have them for $23. These standards here are also so much healthier. The named gallon hostas are now just $3 and gallon perennials have gone from $10 to $7. Smaller pots of English Daisies (bellis perennis) just $2 from $3 and annual transplants are $1 instead of $1.29. They have some beautiful begonias marked from $4 to $2 to now $1. I bought one put it on the pation fence post and it blew over. I picked it up and tugged a bit too hard and the whole plant snapped off from the pot. Turns out there's a bulb underneath, so I might go back and buy some to try and see if I can keep the bulbs over winter and sell them next year lol

I haven't been back to the garden centre in a while but I've heard that this year they are taking a loss. The high price of living affects the extra's. I've only spent $20 myself this year on flowers and plants.

About gas prices . . . we're paying too much too, but I know it's worse state-side . . . guess a lot of Americans are looking at electric bicycles, scooters and stuff.

I'm thinking about buying an electric bike - my knees don't like going up an incline, no matter how slight.

The one I have in mind also works manually - so you can ride it the normal way, then go 'putt-putt-putt' when the goin' gets tough.

I bought a 10" hanging basket of fuchsia, and a spike plant. They're really slashing their prices, too bad I don't have any more money to spend just $10 left (well I did save $130 for my exchange but I'm not going to use any of it). The cashier told me she really liked the fuchsia and I asked her when the garden center was closing. She said it closes this Sunday until next year. If only h=I had a few more dollars...don't we all wish lol The standard fuchsias and abutilons are $10 now from $12 so I might get one with the $10 I have left. I want the fuchsia but think an abutilon will be better. The fuchsia standards have lots of ripe berries on them, and when I first picked one up to look at it, it looked like grapes...but I remembered that fuchsias set seeds in berries instead of dry seedpods. The hanging baskets are now about $10 down from $20-25 and the roses are now $13 instead of $17. Ornamental grasses are $3 (even the bigger ones) instead of $6. Not very many hostas left but they're $3 each, the gallon perennials haven't gone down and are still $7. Annual transplant from $1 to $0.8....oh I'm going crazy with these low prices, nice flowers and limited budget lol $3 potted 4" annuals are now $2, all trailers are $1 including the tricolour sweet potato, trailing verbena/bone flower (torenia)/petunia/creeping jenny/etc. Cedars (for hedging I guess for $5, and lots lots more....I'm going to burst with all these low prices. better yet, I think these prices are going to go down a bit lower tomorrow (saturday) and maybe a final clearence on sunday (the last day)

I handed out flyers for an hour just now and got $6.50. I bought a pink abutilon (flowering maple) standard. I asked if their last day is tomorrow and the cashier said monday (figured since Canada day (Canadian version of 4th of july) is a tuesday this year). Won't get much done for a while because I'll be packing this week. I'll go there tomorrow to see if they're slashing prices lower, and again monday to pick up whatever else I can.

Helping the world one seed at a time

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
