I was photographing this pigeon this morning, just as it was taking off from the sidewalk of the downtown bus shelter here in Nashville. It reminded me of the artwork on the album cover, "Abraxas", by Santana

Question here ..... Yesterday as I drove down the lane in my car.....I spied this turquoise bird. All one color from what I could see.. Is that a type of a finch?
I dislike pigeons immensely, BUT---today a guy was shooting them in the long driveway next to me from his porch. Made me VERY angry, he hit one and killed it.....I was so sad. Poor bird, I don't like them but I would never hurt one ever......Then a big black bird was eating it---would that be a crow? I didn't know that they'd eat other birds......
BTW, I would've confronted him or called the cops but these people are scary and not the best of character....I think some unsavory stuff goes on from that apartment. He didn't see me when he did it because I was at the side of his view, but I made sure he saw me---and I picked the phone up like I was calling someone and he quickly went inside.....
Surprisingly, I am not against hunters ai all, if they do it for the right reasons. Many birders become bird hunters during hunting seaon. From the age of 8 years old until the age of 20 I was a fanatical hunter. When my guns were destroyed in a fire, I never bothered to replace them and never really hunted after that. Once I became a birder, I found it gave me the same enjoyment that hunting did and NOBODY got hurt. I used to hunt with a gun: Now, I hunt with a Canon.

Ohhhhhhh man talk about taking me waaaaaaaaay back,, I have that album!! yesss album!! not cassette,, got that song in my head now,,
Great picture Birdman!!!! Loz Pigeons don't bother me,, Just my car,, droppings everywhere especially parking in a shopping center and even in parking garages,,, that guy would have gotten arrested here for doing that,, it's against the law to kill any kind of bird here,, When there is a mass count of birds.. especially pigeons like in an open ware houses,, officials have some kind of Loud Horn they use to make them leave ,, it works for a while but eventually they come back.

Any one know? Or perhaps a swallow ?
Sounds like a male Indigo Bunting to me. A very common bird in the Summer, they like to sing from a CONSPICUOUS perch and have a rather complex and beautiful song. In the Winter they migrate South. Here is the ONLY picture I've ever gotten of one.

I'm not against hunting, Mark hunts deer for food....but BB guns are illegal to fire in town....and so is killing birds. I live in a pretty densely populated area. I mean it's pretty redneck central around here, so a guy shooting off his porch with a BB gun isn't that rare I guess out in the country a bit more. It just ticked me off---I love birds, that bird wasn't hurting anyone. I guess it was worse for me because I actually watched him shoot it and watched the bird flop around for a while. And it's not like the guy who shot it ate it. If you hunt for deer and you eat it and it's done legally then I don't mind.

I LOVE Santana. He is a national hero in El Salvador, my Hispanic friends tell me. I LOVE the whole Abraxas album. I also love El Farol, and Smooth by him. I am crazy over Salsa and other Hispanic music.

Pigions destroyed our Window to our concrete silo and Hubby had to go up there and build it in .. They actually pull the metal away and go inside for food.
dove wrapped in bacon with a slice of jalapeno. mmmm...mmmm personally I can't see 'hunting' pigeons. it'd be like hunting cow. but if they are destroying your property I guess I can see disposing of them. and if you gotta kill them you should eat them.

To me it is Sheri. Taking any animals of fishes life is taking a life.
I'm not against hunting at all--afterall I eat meat, although I'd never do it myself. If someone is legally hunting whatever is in season then that's okay with me.....but just to shoot a pigeon that wasn't hurting a soul is absolutely not. I'd think the same way if someone went deer hunting and shot the deer and left it in the woods. Mark eats all the animals he gets. And he only takes clean shots. Lots of hunters around here...hunters and miners.
I doubt I could ever eat a dove or pigeon because I've grown up seeing them and I have doves that are like old friends that come and nest year after year at my house, and I've never thought of them as food--and pigeons always seem so dirty to me. I guess if I were hungry enough I'd eat anything. I know many people that eat squirrel. Someone brought Mark squirrel dumplings before and I smiled and said thanks, but I was inwardly cringing......some things might taste good but just seem gross to me to eat. Especially when squirrels are in the rodent family.
squirrel is pretty good eating. back when we had our deer lease we'd have a big squirrel fry each year. only thing, they left the little feet on them. grossed me out! i'd grab a chunck and fold my fingers around the feet so I wouldn't have to see them. ha ha. guess you could say these were some back woods country folk.

LOz Your no farmer.........Do you happen to eat chicken or hamburger or ham ? That is chicken(dead) Cow -beef and Ham is the pig you kill......Bet not many dont want that meat on the tables............My daddy raise 10 kids on all those 3 animals.....Duck too. Go figure.
No Barb you got what I'm saying wrong....My husband hunts, I'm not against it. I eat chicken, beef, and ham....you must've misread what I said. I think if an animal is killed or hunted for food then that's fine. I just don't like when hunters kill a deer and leave it in the woods...if you aren't gonna eat it, don't kill it.
I just wouldn't personally want to eat squirrel or pigeons...but if someone kills them for food then I'm all good with that.
