This is the 8th straight day with temps in the 90's and we haven't had any rain in over 2 weeks. My poor plants are melting...I can't seem to water them enough in this heat. I can just imagine what my water bill is going to be. Do you think a rain dance would work? I'd even dance naked in the front yard if I thought it would help...but it might scare the neighbors...and maybe a few squirrels and stray cats.
it's so very dry here too, so I know what your going through. some plants I watered last night are already wilted today and still dry. I just try and water every morning and every night with very low water pressure. once the ground gets rock hard it is so difficult to get the water to soak in. it just runs off like as if you were watering concrete. Oh, and I haven't had any luck with the rain dance. but, I've noticed if I get every single thing watered really good at one time. then it will rain!

You poor DEARS.....NO Rain.....Do you by any chance have rain barrels when it does? I have a huge drum plastic from a soda manufact. I collect rain off the roof for plants.......
yes I have a rain trough thing I catch rain water in. and also I bring pictures out and put on the steps to catch rain water off the porch. last time it rained I got about 1/4 of 2 quart picture filled! ha ha.

The suggestions about collecting rain, when it does rain, are good. A stunning amount of water goes from your roof to the sewer-- why not capture it? There are lots of sites about how to construct a rain barrel to your downspouts.
One other suggestion is to consider just how much water is 'wasted' inside your house and then dream up ways of re-using it. For example, you could put a plastic wash tub (dish tub) in your sink. Collect the water as you wash your hands or rinse out a cup before you load the dish washer. I bet you'll be surprised how much water just runs down the drain that could be re-used.
One other option, if your municipality will do this, is to install a second water main at the street to which you connect your hoses or sprinkler system. A small town in eastern NC did this for a price. The idea is that most places calculate the sewer portion of your water bill based on water consumption and since water you use outside doesn't go into the sewer, you shouldn't have to pay sewer charges for it. Something to look into.
Good luck!

it is so dry here too. we had thunder storms last week but not much rain. the lightning started a fire in a swamp and it is still burning. the fire department can't get to it. we are supposed to get more storms the next 3 nights, we are hoping it is more rain and less lightning this time.
i'm very, very lucky. So far none of the plants that have survived being transplanted are complaining about the heat. Of course, I have mostly drought tolerant plants and that helps a great deal too.
We've had lightnening storms here too the last couple of nights. No rain at my place but there are flood warnings in the area and penny sized hail forecast for the area. That's very scary with vinyl siding. Hope it doesn't materialize. I'd hate to have to take out a second mortgage to reside the house before I've even made a payment.

That's what happened here last year. The hail went right through the siding on one side of my house as well as the eavestroughs. Praying it passes you by Tammy.
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
That baffles me, if the swamp is dry , it isnt a swamp????????
barb, it is so dry that the swamp has evaporated. a lot of folks who are new to here think it is "dry land" but as soon as it rains, it will be under 2 feet of water. if it rains. we are coming out (maybe?) of a 4 year drought. wish us luck. and yes, it is still burning.
Well, I wasn't gonna say anything...but you kinda sounded like a bragger. he he. just kidding. last spring here, it rained for basically 2 months straight. couldn't mow, the ground was too wet! therefore, could barely see any of the flowerbeds to do any weeding. too much rain can be just as bad as not enough. hopefully, the weather will level off for all of us soon!
