I've seen Black Krim in seed catalogs, but have never tried them. Has anyone?

Some people love them. I have only had Black from Tula, and the blacks have a taste some describe as "smoky." There is a tomato called Creme Noir, I think, that is actually just a French spelling for Black Krim, but it may be just slightly different as some say they like it better. I'd just like to try them both!

That would be Noire de Crimee which some people claim to be an independent variety apart from Black Krim. I've only grown the latter, so I can't speak to that, but they do both mean the same thing. Black Krim is somewhat smaller than Black From Tula, but they have similar compact growth habits, not becoming monster 7' plants, more like 4-5' tall. Neither are hugely prolific, but the flavour of the fruits for both of these varieties is outstanding. Most of the so-called 'black' varieties that we've come to enjoy have their origins in Russia and the former Soviet Union. One of the many blessings of the end of the Cold War is that we all get to enjoy these lovely tomatoes!

Cheers,
Julianna
