I found a knife block at the thrift store so now I'm sanding it down and applying poly to it so it will have a nice shine when I am all done. While I wait for the poly to dry I'm also sharpening my cheapo knives. That's not going all that well but I'll keep at it until they will at least cut paper. Anything is an improvement over what I have now.

I hate a dull knife, I have several but I do all my cooking with one old hickory

I got (way back 8 years ago) a new set of cooking pots and pans and a set of cooking tools came with it for free, but I had no where to hang them and I did want them hung somewhere, I I found this tie rack at a yard sell, painted it black and hung it up for my tools

and as you can tell I do not use that can opener, but the rack turned out good and I have lots of hanging room now

...and something old becomes new again. Great

I use a thick coat or heavy cloth wrapped around my arm as a shield, to block knives, whenever I am in a knife fight.

I have a galley kitchen and would love to hang my utensils but I have skylights with the light fixture between them so there is no room.

I'm considering taking down the breakfast bar and connecting wall and putting one up where the hallway wall is. I would have a nice sized kitchen with room for a small island. I could have a hanging rake supported by poles at the corners of the island that way. There would be plenty of storage then.

Just make sure any wall you take down isn't a supporting wall TK.

I have an island, it's the best thing ever. It's the best for rolling and kneading doughs. If you get one(Or make one like we did), you'll love it.

I haven't read through the trailers product book yet but I'm thinking it has a metal I beam running the length of the house. Where the kitchen wall is would not be a good place for a load baring wall. But of course you never know. The wall is less than 5 feet long so it wouldn't be a great deal to take out. The breakfast nook will be the harder part. I'd want to save the double wide counter to use between the kitchen and livingroom the cabinets top and bottom too. Almost like moving half of the "wall" to the side between the kitchen and dinningroom.

I forgot to mention that the poly didn't dry on the knife block. So I've brought it inside. Hopefully that will help. Although it is very humid in here too. Cross your fingers for me.

I'm wondering if the block was oiled with mineral oil instead of varnish? I know butchers blocks are done that way. The varnish will stay tacky if it was.

I think you've nailed it. Is there anyway to get the poly off of there now?
