We just came from Florence, most of the businesses there are still closed. Traffic is better than it was earlier. There is still a ton of mess to clean up.

I'm not in a coastal county (one or two up). we had no real flooding here. just lots and lots of trees down. I wish yall could see where 98% of these trees landed! It is simply amazing. trees laid down in between houses and barns like toothpicks laid neatly between a burger and fries on a plate. not a lot of fuel around here just yet - unless you want to sit in your car and wait 2-3 hours for some, so we haven't gone very far but I gotta say this immediate area did really well. the two houses around here that had a tree through the house the people were not home. I'm glad it is all over. it got a bit loud for a couple of hours on saturday morning.

Glad to hear that you faired as well as you did.--Also glad to hear how the trees chose to fall.--A true blessing to all of you.---The rest of all of this one can deal with.

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
someone asked in an earlier post why a lot of people don't evacuate. I can answer that. obviously some don't have the financial means to fill up the tank and (if they have no fam or friends) pay for a hotel. then you gotta buy food, charcoal, water, whatever, in case the place they are going looses power. those with the money to evacuate faces the fact that until power, water ect is restored in their area the are NOT allowed back in. police block off roads. I can definitely see both sides. if only utility trucks are on the road they can get power up more quickly than if they have to navigate through and sit in traffic with those that need bread, water, fuel. BUT...people wanna come back to make sure they have a house to live in. and make sure their neighbors aren't stealing the cooper wiring out of their houses while they are gone.

I am so glad all of our GH friends seem to have faired this well. I know there are so many who weren't so fortunate. Here in our area there are still over a half million with no electric and thousands have extensive damage to their homes. I can only imagine how bad things are for those on the coast. My prayers go to everyone who has been affected by big bad Ike.

Glad to hear that you are your family are well Cricket! We were worried about you but I did remember you saying that you could be without power for a week so was hoping that was the only reason we didn't hear from you!!
I can totally see where you are coming from there. I would not leave...I wouldn't be able to afford it (unless Bill paid for it)...and I would NOT leave without all my pets, which is a side show on a GOOD day, let alone on a BAD day.
I am going to try to find njoynit's (Hope's) cell number in the morning and see how she is faring.
most shelters do not accept pets. I'm with you, I wouldn't leave my pets behind. I'm not sure where njoynits is, but if she is farther south than me it is very likely she has no cell service or land line.
hubby just ran down to the little store to try and get a bit of gas for the chain saw. they said they were getting a gas truck in at 10. I think he's crazy. he'll be in line for hours. to me the downed trees could wait a day or so. but to each his own.

glad you're ok. I guess he just wants to get out for a while and check things out. Wonder what people do with their pets. You can't let them run loose but you can't leave them penned up either.
good point. I don't really know what some do about their pets. a lady I work with has these big expensive parrots. she evacuated them, then came back home to ride out the storm. ha. hubby's back, the little store got conformation that they were NOT going to get gas in today after all. So, he went to the hardware store and bought some tubing to syphen some gas out of the truck for the chain saw. it seems nothing is going to get in between him and his tree cutting today! ha ha. we have about 8-10 humming birds now. before the storm we had only 2. the day of the storm (before things got bad) we had 6 that feed ALL day long. and as soon as the winds died down enough for them to fly again they were back at the feeder along with a couple more hummers. there's not many blooms left around anywhere for them to eat off of.

root ball of oak. the dogs were having a hay day 'climbing' this tree.
I feel we were VERY fortunate! and my prayers go out to others that weren't as lucky.

Hi everyone!! I just got my cable back, so you know the first place I came to!!!!
Thank you all for your prayers and your concern! This forum is so full of friends, and goodness, and kindness....and I was going CRAZY without being able to get on here!!!
Traffic lights have been out for miles around, stores and restaurants closed without power....streets blocked completely with huge trees down across them. And lots of big trees in peoples yards and along streets either down or split in two and three pieces!! The clean up is going to take quite awhile. But, nothing compared to what it is like on the gulf!!!! I'm grateful!! Our winds here was placed as a catagory 1 hurricane, so I hate to think of what it would be like to be down there!!! I was so afraid that Diane would be affected by the same kinds of wind we had here. And so happy that it wasn't like this where she is at!!
A man at church (the one who took me for a ride on his big red harley) told us about a couple of friends who were on a ride with him and others, who lost their life!! He heard the cracking of a big tree and speeded up on his bike to clear it, then looked back to see if his friends were clear. The couple on their bike directly behind him were hit by the tree and killed. I will not tell you the gruesome details he told us, but it was horrible!! He is a big MAN man, and he stood there and cried telling us about it. It was on the news. They were on a ride called The Heroes Ride, I think. I believe it was to raise money and to honor fallen firefighters.
The Salvation Army sent a disaster relief truck to us here and brought food, AND HOT COFFEE!!! The office personel and maintenance staff got out grills and cooked for us!!!! The council on aging has, and will be sending, boxed lunches. They all have my blessings!!! One of the ladies from church took me to find a store outside of the neighborhood that might be open and I picked up a few things to tide me over. The one thing that I was grateful for is that we had water....no hot water....but who cares?!! Right!!!
I am so happy to be back on here!!!!!!!!! I'm sure you all know what I mean. We've all posted about our addiction to this place, in the Game Room!!!
I'm so glad to see you back Shirls!! We missed you and were very worried about you!!
How nice of all of those people to come to your aid!! I bet the hot coffee made your day! Do you have everything you need now? Hopefully you were able to get enough food to get by for a while! I can't believe you had that bad of winds there!! That is scary!!
I'm sorry to hear about the motorcyclists who lost their lives! That is very sad!!!
A lot of people don't realize how hard hit your area and part of Kentucky were hit.....I was looking at a lot of the damage yesterday online....from Galveston up thru Ohio.....it's incredible that a storm could have such a punch so far inland.
I'm sorry about the loss of life too. That is very sad indeed.
Thank God for the Salvation Army. So glad you are back and are well and stayed safe.
Thank you Jessica....the coffee was the best, best thing!!!
Yes, I am fine now, as far as having food and stuff. And of course, NOW I'm happy to have the internet back!!!!!!!
I dread checking my email!!! (How many jokes will I have from you??!!)
Yes, it was sad about that couple, but I'm grateful it wasn't my friend!! That couple left behind a 9mo. old baby! That's sad!
You might have a few e-mails from me!
Glad to hear you have everything you need and yes, I know getting the internet back is very important! I get so frustrated when I am without! At least you can spend some time here since you probably can't go a lot of places right now!!
I talked to Diane yesterday and Glenda was out and about, so at least she can get to places for food and so on, so I think she is OK. I don't know if they have any power yet today, though.
geez, I didn't know Ike made it all the way to Ohio! I only caught a bit of news here and there after the storm. we had a generator but not a lot of gas, so we just watched 5-10 minutes worth 1-2 times a day. I just found out the other day where the actual eye made landfall. good to see people, although slowly, getting their power ect back on. we still have no fuel around here but everything else is up and running. I guess when we run out of food we'll have to walk to the store. but, like everyone else, we're taking it one day at a time.
