Jobs arent forever anymore. HD was in the steelmills , Inspector and layed off many times.. We never remodeled or bought new furniture till the mortgage was over. Never ever missed a payment........
It is scarey to Owe and owe.
Now only one sure advice, if one ever get in a bind and cant make a mortgage, tell the bank before it is due.. The will go an extra mile if you do that.
Trust me Carol, I had my stupid time with plastic. When I was 19. Got myself into trouble and Dad had to bail me out. But it did a lot to teach me a lesson. I was so relieved to have it paid off that I never got another card ever again. And dad is EXTREMELY good with money and money conscious. Like if we were cold as a kid we had to put another sweater on before he'd even think of turning up the heat. And usually that worked.
The only bill I wish we didn't have is the mortgage.....almost all of it goes to interest. Makes me ill.
Use to make me mad too, my father in laws favorite saying . Something like first 10 years is all intrest only. He loved saying that , for one reason , his mom gave him a home for free, he didnt pay a cent.......I think secretly wishing us bad luck, cause the older son wasnt married and had no hours. His favorite son..
We owned the 'farm' when we sold it. WE bought this house before it sold, BUT we didn't spend one more dime on this house than we had asked for the farm. We thought people our age had no business taking out a mortgage. The bad part was paying the bank for the 6 months we had the farm up for sale. So glad when that was over.

Our farm sold 3 times with a back up offer as well in those 6 months. no one but the last people could get a loan. One must remember there is that to contend with as well. Our property was frontage also, and much sought after. The reason we left was because DH was worried that if he passed before me, what would I do, so he moved me to a new, one level house, with 1/2 acre instead of a 90 yr old 2 story farm house with 5 acres.
(you see his good friend died of cancer leaving his wife out in the middle of nowhere on a 160 acre farm with an old farm house that needed work done to it. he did not want to do that to me< so we agreed to move)

Neighbors across from me man died 2 years ago.....Leaving her a large farm and house modern brick and all the trimmings. She collects rent from a 2nd house, gas rites payment monthly, pension schoolteacher, social security, and new vehicles , own 4 wheeler . Hey she isnt hurting.. Collected all his wealth and has all his kids to help.
Depends what a person loves...... 5 acres was not all that bad.. widow on the other side of me, man died week after ther first one. She is living good........Herself.. GOes to the kids house, she had about 7 and stays at each now an then ....She is doing well.
My widow sis lives in town, life isnt that great there.. Only one neighbor speaks to her......SHe is alone, our families arent real close, 7 miles an we have to cater to her.. The ones in town wont do it all.
I think like you Carol. If anything happened to Johnny I would not want to stay here. Our house will be paid off in 18 months but the upkeep of the grounds would be more than I'd want to handle by myself. We've thought about selling many times but now that the road has gotten everything torn up I don't know if anyone would want it. When the roads completed we may think about it again.
[color:#6600CC] "Sheri thank you for your kind words." It was not an easy thing for us to do. But it is something we felt needed to be done so we did it.
I brought some of my good soil from 'the farm' and dug out the flower beds in the back of the house, and put in "MY" soil there instead. Then I brought my wild violets, my dafodils, Valarie's conflowers, and a start of her lilac bush, that she bought while in school in Nebraska here and planted them as well...and oh some of the large decorative rocks I had in the landscaping at the farm house as well.
So in essence I brought a lot of my old home with me.
after that I was able to sleep at night and this felt more like home.
PS a year later I called the people that had bought our home and asked them if I could come and dig up some of the surprise lillies that were planted there. (I had gotten from a friend of mine). they said yes and dig them up for me. Later I learn I could of dug them up at any time of year, but oh well I have them now at least.

Well they aren't all HUGE presents, but most are nice presents. I'm a little crazy because I love shopping and giving and Christmas....And we don't make THAT much money, that's why I start so early.
Don't tell, but I'm now up to 49 presents for Athena, my niece....some are smaller things like jigsaws, and coloring books....I did get her a kids digital camera though. That's sort of her big present I guess. Lots of dolls and doll clothing, and Webkinz and an outfit....clothes, books, all kinds of stuff.
I start abbreviating on the presents, from L&M because writing Laura and Mark takes too long on so many things....Dad always jokes how L&M is a pretty good company.
Anyone remember this from last year? TOOOOOO CUTE! She's growing up too fast.
Loz, first, I have NO idea how I missed this before. I just finished looking st it again. Athena is soooo cute.--a true sweet heart. You are one lucky Auntie for sure.
second, have you thought of getting on the computer and making address labels into address labels?? there are decorative ones they put out special for Christmas time. THAT would save you as well.

She's so cute I could just eat her up! It won't be long until she loses that total childish innocence and crosses into preteen know it all. The years are going SOOOOOOOOOOOOO fast! I'd totally forgot about that video....just came across it in my picture search. I could watch it a zillion times! Probably watched it at least 3 times yesterday.
I SHOULD make labels! That would be the smart think, for some reason I just never do.......Christmas Eve when we put out the presents in their morning spots we have a hard time reading the pen writing on the paper sometimes.
Athena is only 7 this Birthday, right>??? There are a few years left then---and besides, since you are NOT the MOM, so you may very well remain "cool" for all of time-----yea, thats the ticket !!!!
about the labels, I think if I get my printer fixed, I may very well print out MY labels, I get tired of writing down names as well.
Just think, we could count the gifts we havwe for each person, & presto, write their names & ours once & be done !!! Sure sounds good to me !!!
I have no idea why I have not thought of this before????--But hey, at least I thought of it now.

I wrap each persons gifts in different paper. That way I don't need labels. My daughter collects angels so I get angel paper. My other daughter, Ginger, gets gingerbread paper. Colby likes cars, so he gets car paper and so on.
I was thinking of hanging my Christmas lights outside today...and I'll tell you why....first of all it's warmer today than it's going to be for a while, maybe the warmest for the rest of the year.
We hung them up really early a few years ago on a warm day too.
I don't want to be outside freezing my fingers off putting them up, that's no fun. And a few houses do already have lights up....so I wouldn't be the first "crazy" one out putting them up.
