A few weeks ago, Barb sent me some Christmas cactus cuttings---and then as a surprise bonus she sent me an Oxalis bulb--"Charmed Wine" I believe the variety is.--well obviously it took off and blooomed well didn't it???

Thank you so much, barb---This was so nice of you---- kissie

Below is the Christmas cactus!!!--There are cuttings of Red, Peach and White !!
I think 1 or 2 may not make it, but as a whole they are doing well. clap---Barb, I dipped them in root hormone before sticking them into the dirt.

Wonderful
You did it correct.. That is what the Oxalis looks like .It will multiply and always on one stem like that .. Different ..Blooms purple later.

It looks fine.

cactus takes a little while to root .. Dont keep them in the sun to root .
More like shade.

Theres always more.

Your successful.

tThanks Dodge---

what Imeant about the cactus----several of them seem sturdy when you gently 'wiggle' them--but a few, seem limp, so that is why I thought perhaps a few did not root--and then perhap[s they will yet--thay all are still green.

I am so glad the Oxalis looks good---I figured it was supposed to look that way, but I was thinking it was too spindly & I should of planted it deeper so it would of been stronger----I have it in the dining area now, because I was forgetting to keep it moist with it in the bedroom. The light it is getting in there is a muted indirect light--and that is only if & when I open the vertical blinds, so I think it is doing ok------I will watch it closely. Thanks again.

=========================

You dont have to transplant.....I keep mine in the same container for a long time.. One is about 2 or 3 years .. They grow and die off and grow more leaves and blooms all the time.. Dont transplant ..Let them do their own thing.

so tell me, Dodge, is it ok if my Oxalis is not multiplying right now?/ I still have 3 stems--and they are doing very well, but I have not had any more come up from the bulb in say a week or 2. Am I doing something wrong, or expecting too much too fast??? why

If it isnt broke dont fix it ..

LOL

You are expecting too much too fast.....it sound normal and in time will go bananas.......Just leave it alone. It looses leaves and flowers and replaces them .....Just give it time..

Happy gardening.

I know they do the "dormant thing"--well now I do----but thanks for the information.

many years ago I threw away a small green oxalis with delicate pink flowers---because I thought it had died. boohoo--my DH's great aunt who had previously owned the plant was not there to tell me all I needed to know about it-
I promise to be much more patient this go around, dodge--thanks. rose

Finally the 4th stem is beginning to come up from the charmed wine oxalis bulb. clap--and it can be as slow, and as dormant as it pleases. just as long as it does not die---

Dodge--thank you very much for the Oxalis bulb and for the kind words---

I think of you and your kindness every day when I look at the Oxalis to see how it is coming along. thumbup

Diane--thank you so much----the "Charmed wine" does look nice, I agree but it has nothing on the one you got from Dodge--but I will get where you are one day I think/hope. why

The pot I bought from Wal-Mart--I have several that match--
I also have several gnome pot hangers--and then some frog pot hangers---some gifts & some I bought-

PS: The 2 christmas pot hangers you gave me in a fall swap one year are out year round--- shots

The light green object you see is a frog plant steak decoration.
I think sometimes I have taken potting plants to a whole new "level" LOL

Barb, almost a year later--here is the Oxalis and the Christmas cactus.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Barb:

I have read that I should let the Charmed wine go dormant buy stopping to water it, say for a month or so. Then after it has had a rest I should begin re-watering it again. What say you ??
and about the cactus. can you see the new little "leaves" ? it is doing well indeed, it is growing slow but sure. thumbup
When, if at all, do I need to fertilize either of these plants ??

Hi

The cactus is doing great. It actually likes being crowded , so keep it going.
I water them seldom . Your looks like your treating it right. Fertilize? Maybe once or twice a year.LOL

Now YOur charmed wine. I dont do what you read. They will go dormant on their own an come back.
Yours is suffering from lack of light. I have the greatest one in the kitchen window east side of the house. Couple upstairs on east side. Gorgous now.

I water oxy but not to a great deal. Not much on the fertilizer either.

Hope this helps.

barb

On both counts thanks. My kitchen window is west facing, and not wide enough for the Oxalis. I might have a place in an east facing window in the computer room here.
I would have to raise the curtain though. How much sun would it need--in terms of hours???
about the cactus. they are on my dining room table and next to it. BUT I have that UV film on the windows. I hope that is ok.

Thanks for the help---I appreciate it much.
