Well, everyone--I need to go and fix supper--I'll be back later tonight--

I went grocery shopping today, and the kids have been munching on everything in site. I will skip cooking supper. they won't be hungry enough for me to go to the trouble.
I got a new set of dishes for Christmas. I haven't even opened them yet. I guess I could do that this evening and get them all washed up. it will be nice to have plates and bowls and glasses that actually match again!
how was everyones day?

Just came in from work and was reading back on the coffee house,,

Going back to babysitting fee just for a sec,,
I was paying my baby sitter 20$ a day for a 9 hour day back in the early 80's it took 1/3 of my check a week back then,, and the kids were 1 and 3,, a lot of responsibility for just 20 $ a day,, diapers, meals, cleaning them,, entertaining them etc,
Most people in my area now pay minimum wage for this area,, If the kids are above the age of 6.
Kids under five require more attention so they pay more,,
Kids 6 - 12 watching TV for most of the time period,, would probably just require supervision , not to argue and fuss over channels to watch and a snack possibly,, so no biggy,, I probably would have paid the girl 15 bucks too,, and sent a snack along with the kids so it wouldn't have come out the sitter's kitchen,

I never ever paid my kids to behave or bribed them to be responsible.
I've seen too many parents do that ,, and it sets the stage for ugliness to rear it's head and their kids took advantage of it well into the teens,I'm sure it doesn't happen like that in all situations,, but I've seen it happen,, and the kids ruled the roost because of it,, they always had a hand out waiting to get paid for something they should be doing anyway with out pay.
With mine,, the reward for good behaviors was self accomplishments and self awareness, giving them good self esteem,, with verbal rewards and hugs from me with bonus surprises for doing things around the house,, or in the yard with out having to ask that it be done,, No reports of fussing and fighting no tattling,, got extra trips going to the movies,, batting cages or something like that.
Not being consistent, about bonuses keep them on their toes cuz they never knew when and IF I'd throw them a bonus day or activity they'd love to have or do,, but never ever cash right out for following rules and being responsible.
Each to their own and what ever works for your families,, But I think praise and being proud of one's behavior and being responsible is priceless, and I just can't wrap my head around putting a price tag on it.

wow, a third of your paycheck going to sitters. yep! I've been there when the kids were younger and I was driving back and forth to the big city. there were a few years there with the price of gas and such that I ONLY worked for the insurance for me and the fam. basically everything I made went to gas, day care, ect. that really stunk! and take a wild guess how ofen we used that insurance during those years?

Looks like the snow has pretty much melted. If there's ice on the roads in the morning and the buses can't roll I'll have another snow day. We'll have to make them up but we have 2 weeks off in April so I hope we make them up then. I like having a day here and there rather than 2 weeks straight.

It's sad that child care is a source of frustration. I wish they could be paid more because I think you get what you pay for, but then like Cricket says you're working to pay the babysitter.

we have a cold night here tonight - upper 20's, then we'll be having highs in the 70's for about a week. wha-hoo!
we have about 2 more months of this mess before the weather levels out for us and things start blooming again. I can hardly wait!

anyone grow garlic? I've had some in the ground for a couple of months. I dug around one of them yesterday afternoon expecting to see how big the cloves were. the one wee clove I planted looks exactly the same. it has not divided at all.
last year they didn't do well for me but I read up and realized I planted them too early. it was still too hot. this year I waited, but no results yet?

getting colder here by the day,, suppose to be really cold by the weekend and they say our winter is here now,, Feb right around the corner,, worse month of the year,, so only 4 weeks and a few days then blooms for us too!!

never grew garlic can't help ya with that

gosh angel! your not that much farther north than me, but our worst winter weather is january. that's interesting.

I guess I need to go back and read more on garlic.
I need to find out about carrots too. this is only my 2nd year at WINTER veggies. lettuce is the only thing so far that I seem to be able to grow well?

Hi everyone ~

Maxi just left. I won't see him again until Friday. I have much to do before then, too.

My porch is a solid block of ice, so we treated it with melty stuff & sand... hopefully it will be in good shape by the time I have to leave for dialysis tomorrow.

I'm tuned in at the moment to stations showing the Inaugeral Balls.... I want to see what she is wearing. I liked her outfit today.

I liked her outfit today too. But she was freezing. She was freezing when they were walking on the street. And she was freezing when standing, watching the parade. I wanted Barack to take his jacket off and toss it over her shoulders.

holy cow! it's only 8! it feels like 10.
this cold weather just makes me want to curl under a blanket and stay there till spring time. I swear I could easily be a bear. all I want to do lately is eat and sleep. If I lived any farther north I'd weigh 400 lbs.

That is a normal response to cold weather, Cricket. It takes a bunch of fuel to keep the body warm & rested. So keep on eating and sleeping... you are doing yourself good.


My girl didn't come again today but her boss showed up and did several needful things for me. It is really hard for us to go so many days without help. I was very glad Maxi was at least here because he can reach things and is very capable. Still, I have trained helpers for a reason.

10 days in a row over 80 degrees. It is a long warm spell for us in January. We will be dropping to low 70's tomorrow with rain on Thursday.

I opened a new CH because this is post 98.
