The idea of having a bit of Asparagus in the garden has been growing but since this is all new to me I want to make sure I do it right the first time. I was hopping for some good tips like..a good place to buy them, should I do from seeds or roots and what is a good place to plant them.

It takes three years to get a harvest from asparagus grown from seeds. It takes a year or two to get a harvest from roots. Asparagus seeds are cheaper than roots.

Even planted from roots, it is usually a good 3 years before you get a crop worth eating. seeds take much longer. They like loose, rich soil and to be undisturbed.
I had mine in part shade here in s.Cal. and they needed a lot of regular water. They were just getting to their third year and my husband decided to build a porch over them. I was not thrilled.

Asparagus is grown in the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta about two counties north of mine.No wonder asparagus is so expensive.It's cheaper to grow your own rather than buying it from the supermarket.

I wanted to plant some asparagus in our 2009 garden (will be brand new) but my husband says it's a waste of space. Maybe I'll just sneak some in without him knowing.

Asparagus is ferny and a good looking plant. It looks good as a foundation planting along with the rest of them around your house. It makes a decent 'front yard' plant during its growing season then disappears out of sight for winters. I had them all along my front porch (until my husband decided he needed to add concrete to that area )

I would go with the plants.--
