just transferring the info from the thread on the old site to here.

canned/pouched wet food for cats and dogs was recalled due to illness and deaths. turned out that it was caused by rat poison that was in one of the ingredients.

a complete list of the brands affected can be found on the

menu foods recall info site

someone on my ferret forum just posted the following:

Topic Title - Email from Purina re: Recall

I'm on their mailing list and got this email:

An Update from Nestle Purina PetCare Company About the Menu
Foods Recall - March 23, 2007

We at Nestle Purina PetCare Company know the reports of pet food
recalls and withdrawals over the past week have been very
concerning and at times confusing for pet owners, who want to
ensure the safety of the food they are feeding their beloved pets.

We want to take this opportunity to reassure you that Mighty Dog
pouch products are the ONLY Purina(r) brand products affected by
Menu Foods' recall. Nestle Purina stands behind the high-quality
of our pet foods, and all Purina brand cat food products and all
other Purina brand dog food products, including Mighty Dog
canned products, can continue to be fed to your pets with
complete confidence.

On Friday, March 16, Nestle Purina PetCare issued its press
release announcing the voluntary withdrawal of our Mighty Dog(r)
brand pouch-packaged products that were produced by Menu Foods
from Dec. 3, 2006, through March 14, 2007. While we had no
indication of any product quality or safety issues specifically
related to our Mighty Dog pouch products at that time, we are
proactively withdrawing these products as a precautionary
measure, because the well-being of pets and the safety and
efficacy of our products are our top priorities.

reaching us by phone this week. While we have dedicated numerous
additional phone lines, people and other resources exclusively
for this purpose, we understand that the volume of calls still
has occasionally exceeded our system capacity.

We have prepared some Frequently Asked Questions that may be
helpful to your understanding of this situation, and we will
update these questions as more information becomes available. If

i remembered that someone had specifically mentioned this particular brand, so i wanted to be sure to pass the info on!

also, menufoods has increased the brands recalled, so if anyone checked the list when this first happened, you might want to check it again.

there's been another update on the recalled food dry cat food added to the recall

this is the second report about it that i've seen today (the other was on cnn).

i checked the menufoods site - they haven't added the dry science diet item to the recalled items list. and their press release, dated today, does not mention it either.

odd as i read the cnn article around noon today.

anyway, just wanted to provide the info to everyone.

If anyone needs phone numbers or more detailed info I have first hand information. They said I can't talk to the press, but know one told me not to talk to friends. But don't panic yet I will get all new e-mails from work today from at least 95 pet food makers.I will be pulling all updates off the shelf if the new info is correct. And I will pass along anything I get as soon as I get home.

Sorry, forgot one thing.Very important don't feed pouch dog food to your pet.No pouch food weather or not your pet got sick. These companies have known as far back as october of 2006 that there food was bad.It is only a matter of time before more is recalled. If the store you shop at has pouch food DO NOT buy it.Even if customers returns unrecalled food and tells the store it hurt or killed there dog or cat the store can not remove that product until the manufacture gives the ok.That like we know now can take months.Be safe.

Wal-Mart has pulled their Ole Roy Jerky strip treats and dog biscuits. They said the chicken strip treats were no included. I was told that today when I was in there buying stuff to cook my dogs food as will not be buying anymore for awhile even though I didn't feed anything on the recall the way things are going they may wind up pulling a lot more off before this is over.

I hadn't realized there was so many items recalled. One of the first brands recalled was manufactured in El Dorado, KS and it was all over the news. Then when it came out that the El Dorado plant was found to be clean, they news dropped it. Hadn't heard anything for several weeks--probably mid to late march-ish. Glad to find this, my cat gets Purina something (in a green bag) so I'll be checking in regularly. Thanks for the heads up!

Just thought I'd add that they are now recalling many varieties of Natural Balance cat and dog (?) food.
