Wow! You caught him in a good mood Thorny! He's singing. I caught a Pine Siskin chirping at me the other day.

ALL the birds have started their Springtime songs and behaviors this week. The Great Backyard Bird Count starts Friday and runs through Monday and I am getting ready for that. I am having surgery, Thursday, a hernia repair. It is day surgery, so I should be up on my feet and home by Thursday afternoon and should be able to participate in this event.

My sis had that several times.. DO not lift things.
and Thorny surely yo remembner my fiasco of a 14 month ordeal. I say do Less than they tell you---and NO, I repeat, NO lifting. when they say 5 pounds is ok to lift and carry what they really mean is a cup of coffee and a dinner plate are the max that is workable.--trust me and my 4 surgeries, I know---the Occupational therapist told me too do not bend over, if somwething is on the floor that you need, either get grabbers or squat down to reach it. I will be praying for you.

Thanks Sheri,
Looks like the red cardinal lost his top , just like thron said it did.
Very lucky you......
All I seen was a red male finch today. The chickadees drove it off the feeder.

I am having fun. With this new job I get home before dark and yesterday I took Thorn's advice. I went outside and sat with my camera for a while. I was going through seeds but I did it all outside. I had a wonderful time. The problem is that when I walk Lizzy, the Murdering Cat, walks with me.

Know what you mean, Sheri, one of our cats likes to chase birds, although it should be said, without much success. She always has my scolding echoing in her ears if she even looks at a bird the wrong way. Our older cat has learned not to chase birds. I think she got tired of being told off.

No woods here. Just suburban yards. I take most of my pics in the Weeping willow tree in my front yard that is 2/3 dead, but the birds LOVE it.

I use AUTO and flash on mine, too, along with Shutter Priority Mode, Center Focus, and Spot Metering. And I use a tripod. I sit on my front porch in a folding metal chair and straddle the tripod. I also prefocus on the area where the birds will come and then just sit back and wait. I take as many pictures of each bird as I can (My card holds 1,400 pictures), and post the BEST ones on the internet.

My birds take off so fast , I dont have time to do all that .. Quick is my only choice.. Well its too cold to set out on the porch at 20º lOL I do have a tripod but never use it .. b

Daaaaa not my style.. Before I was the Bird Man, I was known as the Cave Man. I have logged several hundred hours total in several hundred caves total. I helped explore and map the largest cave in Tennessee, Cumberland Caverns, with over 35 miles of passages. In 1971, I was the Vice Chairman of the Nashville, TN Grotto, of the National Speleological Society. NSS member # 12039. I still do tame caving. No more climbing down pits with a roaring, icy waterfall pouring over my head anymore.

Cool, Thorn. We went spelunking in New Zealand, black water rafting. Awesome stuff. But guided tours. I've never really explored a cave like I would have liked to in my younger days.

From the age of 13 to the age of 20 I was fascinated by caves. Still am, actually. As a teenager, I spent a lot of my spare time in caves. I married when I was 20 so didn't have the time to spend like I used to, but I didn't mind. Tennessee has the most caves of all the States in the U.S. with well over 2,000 KNOWN caves. Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia combined, make up the largest cave infested area in the world. There are 20 or 30 caves in the city of Nashville alone, including Demonbreun's Cave, where the first white child in Middle Tennessee was born, and a cave discovered in the basement of one of our office buildings when they were building it about 20 or 30 years ago. In THIS cave, they discovered the mummified remains of a Smilodon, or Saber-Toothed Tiger! I have been with a party that has discovered and at least partially explored 1 or 2 caves, myself. One of those was incredibly impressive......if you like to swim in ice water.

My Dad is a Psychiatrist/Musician. My Mom was an Artist/Sociologist, with a strong interest in Quantum Physics. My sister is a commercial Artist and Photographer who was living in England the last I heard. I have a younger Half-brother who is 20 years younger than me. I'm not sure what he does. My Paternal Grandfather was a Banker, Hunter, and Fisherman, and his wife, my paternal Grandmother, was a concert Pianist and soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and tells me she was a Flapper in her youth in the 1920's. All of my family are passionate about music and we all play several instruments.

There realy was a Saber-Toothed Tiger. Actually, It was not quite a cat. It was related to BOTH cats AND dogs. The correct name for it is Smilodon. Google up Smilodon to find out about it. ACTUAL SMILODON SKULL ![[Linked Image]](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Thornius/saber2.jpg) SMILODON ![[Linked Image]](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Thornius/smilodon_fatalis.jpg) And there really was a Saber-Toothed Tiger Mummified in the cave.

I had a few left and when the safflower seeds were gone I put them out hoping the grackles wouldn't return. The cardinals don't seem to like the safflower but they sure like the sunflower seeds.

just let me interject here---I am feeding safflower seeds now too--and yes the crows, crackles & brown-headed cowbirds are gone as well, just like diane promised-- --BUT so are all but 1 of my gold finches. All I have coming to that feeder is house finches, all be it a lot of them, and the occasional sparrow. The cardinals came for a few days but would sit on 1 perch & try unsuccessfully to get at the seed at the port by that perch. --IF they had of gone to the other side of the feeder, they could have sat on the bottom perch & ate off of the top port--and done it quite easily--silly birds--- so I guess when the safflower seed is gone, I will go back to the thistle and just put up with the annoying birds.

Put the safflower seed on a PLATFORM Feeder. Cardinals and some other birds have a lot of trouble eating from a tube feeder and need a large flat surface to feed from, like an old table top.

I still have my thistle feeder for the gold finches and you're exactly right Juniegirl, I have finches galore eating the safflower seeds. I'll let you know if the grackles come back.

Put the safflower seed on a PLATFORM Feeder. Cardinals and some other birds have a lot of trouble eating from a tube feeder and need a large flat surface to feed from, like an old table top. Thanks for the advice, Thorny but with all that has gone on this year I think I will wait until next year before I ask DH for any more favors such as making me a platform feeder---

Got an old picnic table? A sheet of scrap plywood you can fasten horizontally to something? That's all it takes for a platform feeder. You can even use the ground. Birds don't care what it looks like or how well it's made. My first platform feeder was a piece of scrap plywood I nailed on top of the doghouse. It worked like a charm. I now have a small stainless steel table on my front deck that I use as a platform feeder.
