Do you always cut away all the suckers that grow from your roses? I always wondered if some varieties should just be left to fill out.

My grandmother has an old rose that I always loved. One day I dug out a sucker and replanted it here. It seems to be the exact same rose bush now. It grew over a foot last year and is nearly two feet tall.

What I really want to know is, What's the real reason for cutting them away?

I don't know Tamara But I have a rose tree that has suckers growing from it BIG ones!!! my rose tree has little blooms that are yellow and pink now the suckers have blooms buds on them that are RED unbelievable!! I'll get a picture of it tomarrow!!! cut of the suckers for 3 years this year I decided to let them grow to see what would happen Mannn was I surprised!!!

Root suckers usually form on on grafted roses(roses with a root graft you will notice a roundish knot)They are forming roots from the plant the rose is grafted onto most of the time(roots forming below graft union)Sometimes a grafted rose will encounter an accident(like the power company maintaining their lines by dropping limbs on your rose bushes)And your rose may look fine,but when they busted bud union it killed the rooted rose and you are left with the grafted stock which are usually good roses which is why they we're chosen.

I've lost a few roses that we're grafted when lived in Indpls.The cold killed the grafted rose but the root stock remained.
My New year rose that I've nursed for 3-4years..........I just seen its bud color today.I was not happy either.#1 it's red.very far from orange#2 I'll be mad if that bitten bud is thripes.
Me& the power company never resolved their damage issue.They claim they have right away 10 ft on each side of line....I say they replace damaged roses.I think they disbelieved they damaged 12 roses...which is now actually 14.American Beauty was a lost cause as well.And they are back out this year....and when they are within site of my property....I'll be on guard & armed.I'll not be putting my dogs out either.I've even done most of their work in my yard already.We cleaned fence line getting ready to put up 165 feet of chain link so rest of fence matches. I WILL point out some limbs from hurricane damage for them to remove that's PAST 10 feet.(actually...if they just MOVED their lines across the road.......They'd not even be responsible for anything in my yard :D)

Diane,I'll look at my rose tree.Most roses are grafted on rosgusa's.Have you tried sealing the cuts with glue?
My 2 rose topiary tree's are in pots,But I'm thinking of grounding them.I have a time at keeping the stems stright.

I haven't tried the glue thing I've just heard of that recently from Christy( I think)

Actually it grows that way when the roses start dieing off I will trim to more of a ball shape and then it will bloom again in about 6 weeks ,, I should have been shaping it into a ball when it first started filling out again ~ about 6 weeks ago but I had soo many other things going on and it fell to the wayside but natural gowth is how it is now I just will 'groom' it up a bit :wink:

The red flowered suckers should be removed as soon as possible. By allowing the suckers to get this big and flower they will at some point take over and you will lose the Carnival Confetti - which by the way is a beauty. Suckers grow like mad, only flower once and steal engery away from the graft. All grafted roses should have a sucker removed as soon as it sprouts, especially a standard since it has two grafts.

Herbalyn~ I was afraid that's what might happen!!! Tomarrow is going to be a warm day so I'll get out there and take care of those suckers Thanks sooo much for the info it sure gave me the sense of urgancy to cut them off!!

Take it off for sure.....It that is the preposition.
I prefer the confetti......It is all pastels, and match.

When you take the suckers off, why not try to root it into another plant?

I mean root it alone and make another tree?

I like that your's is so full.Mine is skimpy.it's about the same age too.About 3 years.I just keep moving the containers.


They SAY springs new growth is easy to root.My lucks just not run that way.Just got lucky with the old growth this round is all.

Maybe confetti is a better grower than ice burg.

I had a rose that looked like confetti, it was a Cherry-vanilla hybrid tea. It died, all my hybrid teas died. I've since learned to buy floribundas, I couldn't kill them if I tried

YOu sound like me and fish.......One day decieded to raise some gold fish.....
They died in 2 days.......
My sister had some for about 15 years same ones.

I am a total flop. ;o)

Thanks Loz and Cinta That rose tree looks better every year This first year Birds built a nest right in the center of it and there were two baby bird in there!!!
