Hi There~~ I was wondering if I could trim my lilac bush now (January)? why It is very messy and not well taken care of. It barely even gets leaves on it during spring and hardly any blooms. Thanks for any help I can get.

I think it sounds like you really need to trim the bush. But you will probably loose the blooms for this year if you do.

I have a hedge of them. Rule of thumb, When they look bad and do not bloom so good cut them back. Hard. I do this to mine about every 5 or 6 years. I loose a year of flowers but it is well wort it for the health of the plant. Do it while the plant is still sleeping. You will not be sorry.

That is true , they will take some time to start to flower again but it will be worth the wait. Mine are dew to be cut back to the ground again soon. It has been 7 years and they are looking kinda tired and thin. Good luck and just do it.
