my clematis is a midget this year. It's not growing up like the vine it's supposed to be. It's not tall enough to be off the top of the ground.

Your lavendar looks so nice and healthy Diane! Though it's one of the scents that gives me a headache so I can't grow it even though it is such a pretty plant! I bet it smells nice for you with the roses and snapdragons - I LOVE those 2 smells!

stevie g. that's a rhododendron.
neko, I like that straight pathway. It made me realize I don't always have to curve everything. We may use your idea.
Diane, you're yard is beautiful. I have lavendar too and everyone talks about the fragrance but for some reason it's not strong to me.

Oh, I see. I don't have any of those, but they are beautiful. Are they easy to grow, because I like easy things. Our daphne died, and I was treating it so nicely. Quite disappointing; don't think I'll try that one again.

I've planted daphne a doras before and their life span for me is 3 years. They're so picky.
Rhodos love the shade. Other than that they're easy.

If you got some flowers from the Daphnes, I think you did well. Quite a few people here seem to have tried them, without success. My neighbours, who are retired, and can grow just about anything, have pretty much given up on Daphnes. Shade, we have plenty of that. So we could probably grow some rhodos. Just need a bit of space! Do they have a scent?

the daphnes smelled great and bloomed here in February. It's a great plant even if they don't live too long. the rhodos don't have a scent. but sure are pretty

WOW Diane! It's great that your pineapple sage is blooming already! The reason I stopped growing it, is that it only blooms here at the very end of the season. And the reason I planted it in the first place is that hummingbirds are supposed to love it, but by the time mine bloomed (2 years in a row) all the hummers were gone for that year!

Well Diane, I can see with my own eyes now, that there is a difference between Dianthas and Sweet William.
I thought the one you brought back from CH was that pale pink/white one that was in Cindy's garden...or just past there? Where some fairy statues were?
Anyway your photos are beautiful, as always!!!!!!

Ladies what beautiful colors at this time of the year, especially nice to see from my part of the world. We're still in winter/ spring mode around here, my perennials are just starting to show some of their leaves. I have a question for anyone....what's the difference between dianthus perennial and dianthus annual. Oh I know one comes every year but doesn't that happen with the annual one too at times...it will come back next year?

My bulbs are all blooming now. A little late this year but after the winter we had I don't blame them. I finally got outside yesterday. 5 1/2 hours of mostly weeding and I'm still not quite done yet. But, it does look much better and now the spring blooms are no longer over shadowed by last years dead stalks. I have 2 more of my daffodils this year, my red tulips are blooming as are my hot pink ones. Everything has buds and it won't be long now. Also, I discovered that my stargazer lilies are starting to poke up out of the ground. Now I just need to plant my seeds. I was afraid to do that before since we kept getting cold and then it snowed on April 1st. Last year we got an April snow and it killed the little sproutlings I had growing so this year I decided to wait a bit and make sure mother nature was going to start behaving before planting my seeds. Diane, I love that pincushion plant! Beautiful blooms you have already!

Oh I know one comes every year but doesn't that happen with the annual one too at times...it will come back next year? If the annual one came back, it's most likely that it reseeded itself and it grew from seeds that fell in the fall My tulips are showing red now, and I can clearly see the layers on my double tulip buds. It won't be long now!

I'm glad you're seeing signs of spring Kenny! rose petal ; all my dianthus come back,, When I dead head I just drop the dead heads around the base of the plant so It will re seed,, But my original plant never dies back all the way either,, because of the zone I'm in 8a,, these are court yard buttercream Argyranthemum frutescens Argyranthemum is often mistaken for or offered as Chrysanthemum. It is a great plant in containers where it isn't hardy. Will survive in zones 7-11 Full sun I love how the center is a mass of tubular tiny blooms nicotina Lime and other colors

That buttercream plant is gorgeous Diane! At first I thought it looked like a friend egg, but when I read about the tubular middle and looked closer, it reminds me of the fanfare gaillardia. Very pretty!

Diane, when you plant your various wonders, do you plant just 2, 3 or 4 plants together or near each other......or, do you have like a "bunch" of each kind, either in a bed or sprinkled here and there? Do you know what I mean?

I love this little grouping of hyacinths - I think they are so cheerful after a long winter. My tulips are finally starting to bloom. These are such a pretty and vibrant color, and it's difficult to get a good picture because they are so bright.

I'm soo excited....I can FINALLY post in this thread! Today while I was in the garden, I noticed that the bleeding hearts have bloomed. I do have questions about it tho....do I ask them here or in the shade gardening area??? Here's a couple pictures....I was surprised that they started to bloom since they are still putting their leaves out which you can see in the picture.

Well, that's my question about them. I know they are shade lovers but I have like 7 or 8 of them (more if you count all of the babies) and they are all in full sun....they get more than 10 hours of sun and one of them has started to yellow on some of the leaves. I think they did soo well where they are because there were two rhodies that were like 9 feet tall (no lie!!) that were shading them. Do I leave them where they are and just see what happens or do I dig them up and put them in the front bed where it is mostly shade (about 4 hours of direct sun a day)???

I love them. My Nanna had alot of them and they must have been very old because they were huge. I used to pick the hearts off of them and float them in the water barrel....she used to HATE that!

bleeding hearts will go dormant once it gets too hot. it's more of the sun making it hot, than the sun sunburning it...it sounds kinda strange. I'm willing to bet when the rodhies leaf out, it'll provide enough shade. The more sun they get and the higher the temps, the sooner them yellow and go dormant

Kenny, I went all chainsaw massacre on the rhodies later in the summer last year....they will most likely not leaf out much at all this spring/summer. There are also quite a few that have no shelter from the sun/heat at all. Last night I went out and looked at them again....counted all of them. There are 15 plants in total (larger ones and babies). Is it possible to transplant them before they get much larger? They are gaining probably a good 2-3" daily and I don't want to have to move huge ones!

here is my pitiful clematis again. It has rooted to the ground. The wind kept blowing it off the fence before it could twine around tight. Lots of blooms and buds though.

this dianthus is in a pot and comes back every year. Jenn, one time we had a man working in our yard and he cut our rhodos to the ground almost. I nearly had a fit but the next year they were as pretty as ever, only not as big.

Oh WOW Sheri nice ~ Very Nice group of Iris's! Heyyyyyyyy your clematis aren't pitiful They are healthy and beautiful Get a couple of Thin sticks and place them in the ground behind your clematis. make sure there is a "Y" on the upper part of the sticks and wrap the tendril's around the sick and lock it on the "Y" part so it can't fall back down,, it will then reach for the fence to connect with or use some Chicken wire attached to the fence to get it going, up, I have dianthus in a pot that has been coming back for 4 years now, But every spring I thin it out so it doesn't choke it's self out,

Thanks for this Diane:.."I have dianthus in a pot that has been coming back for 4 years now, But every spring I thin it out so it doesn't choke it's self out,"....Since I have six pots of six different kinds I will try to keep them this time. The pot full I had last year was beautiful, but when they were through...I threw them out!! ..I didn't know!!!

Shirley,,, I dead head and drop the dead heads right back onto the soil. as I dead head I get more blooms because deadheading gives new growth more energy,,.. I personally believe The seeds from the dead head germinate which makes my potted dianthus fuller each year.It never dies back all the way there is always green even in the winter because our winters are so mild, tho I do place leaves on top of my pot when it's too cold out.

You can move the dicentra, but try to move them in a clump of dirt rather than digging out just the plant. They'll adjust better because they won't have to send out new roots, and you'll damage less roots. If it makes it sound clearer: dig a hole where you want the plant to go, then go dig around the plant and move the shovelful dirt, plant and all to hole you dug where you want to transplant it. Dicnetra roots are really brittle, and if they snap off now, it'll set them back a bit (especially since they're leafing out and budding)
Helping the world one seed at a time When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

Lynne, very pretty. What is that between the sedum and the tulips?
When you mentioned rocks it made me think of whomever it was a while back who was landscaping with big rocks. Do you remember who that was?

nope. Not Bill. It is a woman who used rocks to do tiered areas in her yard. I might have read it or seen it on TV. I get my places confused sometimes.

Dodge - I don't do bright red flowers, but I do have yellow tulips behind some purple. And you are right... each year I keep adding more and more - it's so uplifting to the spirit to see these first blooms of the season! Stevie - can't wait to see yours bloom when it's spring there!

I love the whities parade there. Thats a cool way to keep the weeds out. Holly Bush that tall? I used to own some and pulled them all out. You have to have a boy and girl to get berries here.. b Good work Diane.

do you think I need to replace that holly. I'm not sure what kind it is but the trunk of it is huge. It was there when we moved in. The ones we planted don't have such big trunks.
My white clematis is supposed to be blooming on the fence in the white area but as you know it's on the ground.

I think I would take both Hollys out.. Too overgrown and hides the pretty house. No road appeal..
hgtv would say.. Too tall .

I think that would be my approach as well. When we bought our house, there were a lot of things that had been let go. I tried pruning them right back, but they were just woody and didn't want to put out any new growth. In the end I just took them out and started again. Having said that, we had a large eucalyptus cut off right at base level, and the arborist even poisoned it. He said it wouldn't come back, but it sent out a whole lot of beautiful blue-green shoots, and now I keep it pruned as a bush (it's meant to be a huge tree). So you could try pruning it at base level and seeing if it comes back.

Thanks Carol and Stevie! My first batch of tulips have now lost their flower petals, but I still have 2 batches that haven't bloomed yet, and the others that are still in bloom. I'm glad the different types are blooming at slightly different times so the bloom time lasts a bit longer. It's funny but the last batch to bloom was the first one I planted a few years ago!

Thanks everyone! And thanks Sheri but I do pull weeds every time I am out there. There are a LOT of seedlings about to grow bigger and I am guessing that they are all weeds unfortunately! Here are a few more blooms in my yard today. Ajuga along the pond waterfall A few forget me nots - so hard to photograph the color!

simply beautiful, Lynne----if that is Ajuga it is pretty---My MIL & FIL landscaped their house & then messed it all up and planted ajuga all over in it---and it spread like wild fire and messed up the landscaping-----but in all the years I did not ever see it flower so pretty--- question: are the forget me nots really such a pretty aqua???

Yep Carol -it's absolutely ajuga. I have always seen it bloom like this, but I just planted this patch last fall. And I am actually hoping it WILL spread like wildfire because I need more plants to cover the waterfall hill so it stops erroding in the heavy rains.
That said... I, too, have seen lawns that have been taken over with it, and it's not so pretty. I will never plant it near a lawn for just that reason, but again, I am hoping it will help with my hill problem.
As for the forget me nots... they are actually more of a pale baby blue, but as I said, I can't ever seem to get a true picture of that color.

Sheri - the reason I bought those ajuga was because they were variegated - the leaves turn a purple, white, green - they are just now growing out in all the warm weather we've had the past week. I have seen the solid green variety, but I thought this had more interest. I don't have a side view of the forget me nots, but I can try to take one tomorrow if we don't get rain - it has cooled down quite a bit tonight and is very windy too.
