For those of you wanting read past threads on Brugmansia's some of us members documented our learning process, Hopefully this will help others wanting to learn Last fall 2008 thread //www.agardenersforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/243449#Post243449
I began growing Brugmansia's 3 years ago thanks to our member Njoynit that sent me cuttings to start me out. I've been keeping track of them for two full seasons now, and this is my 3rd season. I've since sent cuttings out to other members. I'd like to see know how everyone's brugs are doing this spring,, what are your plans, How you over wintered , are they in pots are did you leave in the ground etc,. Mine are coming back up now after covering the base(under) the cut off stocks with leaves,( I cut down to about 6 inches above ground) and then I filled large plastic buckets with leaves and covered the cut brugs. with the bucket turned up side down over the cut stocks so the leaves would insulate and keep the roots from freezing in the winter ,, All Brugs die once the roots freeze. I removed the buckets and leaves the end of February,, and so far this is how much they have grown. Unnamed Pink
Cotton candy and adora,, I've really got to separate these two. They are planted about 2 feet from each other , but Should be further apart. Another Learning experience, Don't plant close together,,
Charles Grimaldi,, another lesson learned Less Sun Less Growth less blooms .He Needs More sun I've got to get him Moved.
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
of the pieces you sent me, only a couple started roots and none of them took off too well at all. the one really tiny piece of the white flowered one that started growing new leaves before it even had roots was the one i thought would make it.
sadly it didn't - i had problems with the radiator in my plant room and i couldn't get it resolved and then i lost the heater all together on christmas day, so, the combination of lack of proper warmth for over a month and more than a full day with no heat at all did it in.
I, too, was lucky to get some brug cuttings from Diane a year ago in the spring. The only one that bloomed for me last year was the Charles Grimaldi. And MAN were those flowers GORGEOUS!!! Thanks again, Diane!!!
I had to overwinter the plants indoors, and Charles just LOVED it by the basement sliding doors. The leaves got HUGE, and a couple of Y's grew too - those are necessary for the plant to bloom. But then... a few weeks before the last frost date here, Charles got spider mites all over terribly and lost ALL of his leaves!
Thankfully, I was soon able to get him outside, hosed him off very well with a strong stream of water, and then planted him back in the ground in the pond garden. He soon started growing all of his leaves back! YEA!
But guess what I saw today?!?!? I am sooooooooooooo excited!!!
See the "Y" in this picture!
There are LOTs of buds - I am thrilled! It's a full 2 months earlier that I am seeing the buds than it was last year! I first saw them in August! I hope this means that I will get lots of "waves" of blooms all summer - the flowers are just so HUGE and BEAUTIFUL and FRAGRANT!
Mine have struggled through the winter, and they've been hardened off, and planted in the ground now. I've noticed something weird happening to them. Could this be blight?!!!

Dodge - are they really supposed to bloom in October? My Adora had a bud on it for the longest time last fall but didn't have time to bloom before a heavy frost got to it.
So here we are, just 4 days later, and this is what I saw this afternoon in between rain showers. I was so excited that they were about to open any day now!
And THIS is what I saw this evening after dinner, which was also after a VERY HEAVY rain and thunderstorm.
WOWZERS!!! These flowers continue to absolutely AMAZE me!!! And they smell heavenly too!
And yet another one, with the camera flash
[size:14pt]Thanks so much again, Diane!!!
[/size]
OHHHHHHHHHH - I saw a small bud on one of my Adora's this afternoon too! It's only about an inch long, but hopefully I will get to see it bloom this time!
those are just beautiful. I've been watering every day hoping for blooms this year. Last year I had lots of buds but we had a frost before most of them bloomed and I didn't get it covered up.
I am so thrilled to say that Charles is still blooming wonderfully, despite some leaf holes from Japanese Beetles. The flowers are so heavenly scented - I can smell them across the pond when I sit on the arbor bench late afternoon feeding the fish in the pond!
Diane - I have faith in you - perseverence will have yours blooming again soon!
Lookie what I have on one of the Adora cuttings! It looks like I am actually going to see a flower on it this year - last year was such a tease with it about to open and then we had a killing frost! This is the only bud on it so far, so I hope I get to see the colors!
And another view
See all the holes on the leaves from the Japanese beetles?!?
beautiful, beautiful flowers!! i can *almost* smell them!!
diane, so sorry to hear about the mites - it's so darn hot and dry there, don't know what to tell you to do to get rid of them. i'm sure they'll bounce back, though, and soon...getting into the 'season' so it'll be rainy and that'll get rid of the mites!!
i would love to try some cuttings again in the fall - if you don't mind sending some again! and i have something i can send you in return...not telling though - it'll have to be a surprise
My very first Adora bloom is opening! This one is NOT going to get killed by frost this time, and I can see the wonderful light salmony color already! When I looked at it yesterday, it looked pale yellow, but today the true colors are coming out. I think it will be fully open this evening - CAN'T WAIT!!!
Bottom not quite fully open yet
There aren't any other buds on this one yet, but it has grown a Y, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more blooms!
Hallelujah Ohhhhhh Lynne! I'm Soooooo happy for you! It's been a long wait but worth it huh?? See what happens when you threaten to deep six it?? Just kidding *inside joke*
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
YEP Diane - she begged for one more chance!
And here she is tonight in all her glory just before it started to storm here ONCE AGAIN!!! We were finally going to eat dinner outside on the deck, but noooooooooo - we couldn't possibly go a day without rain here this summer!
Diane - I just KNOW you are going to have some beautiful blooms this year. You have the magic of the Willy Village there, along with all your wonderful gardening talents!
I'm so thrilled for you, Diane! I know the feeling well now, thanks to you!
My Charles is getting his second round of buds now that the others have finished blooming. They are still tiny, so it will be a while as you said, but it's still very exciting!
More blooms this morning on the Unnamed Pink, I'm waiting on the other brugs to bloom,, Adora has Buds,, as does the cotton candy the buds from Charles Grimaldi dropped
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Thanks,, I believe it's the biggest bloom ever I've gotten from the unnamed pink I have another brug Njoynit sent me two years ago,, I rooted it and planted it but it only grew about 10 inches then appeared to die, last year nothing came up, BUT this year, it came up and is about 3 ft high and has buds on it,, I think it may be the Jean Pasco but I can't be sure,, I had so many starts that particular year,, I'm not sure which one it may be?? I just have to wait until it blooms and see.
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Thanks Shirley,, Dodge yours is sooooo pretty, The picture you took doesn't look like the flower has FULLY opened,, take another picture when it is fully open
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Looks like all of our brugs are blooming at the same time. My Charles Grimaldi is having a second flush of blooms and I am thrilled!!! Here are some pictures I took this evening just as it was turning dark.
See all the buds yet to open? And it smells heavenly out there once again!
This one opened this morning and is a bit darker than the others that just opened tonight.
Dodge - I cannot overwinter them outdoors here either - zone 6. Last year I dug up the trunk of Charles Grimaldi, and I also took several branch cuttings. None of his cuttings made it, but the main plant grew enormous leaves inside. It was looking so terrific when sometime around February it got a horrendous case of spider mites!!! I sprayed it with rubbing alcohol and that caused all the leaves to fall off. I was afraid he was done for, but when I took him outside as soon as I could - early May, just to get the spider mites out of the house, he started putting out new leaves. And now you see the result of that!
I will most likely dig up and pot up the main trunk once again, as well as take cuttings again. I had more Adora cuttings but they were hit by a frost, and amazingly those cuttings fared better inside. I was able to transplant about 5 of those, but only 1 is blooming so far.
I, also would prefer to be able to leave them outside, as I have to bring more and more plants indoors to overwinter. This year I will need room to overwinter some pond plants as well!
That is how I did mine.. Adora I started from seeds. It was indoors and leaves about 18 inches long. White fly hit it .Oh yuk
So this year it was in the basement all winter cut back and it is the only one in bloom. Cuttings a friend sent me most died and some are only about 18 iches tall. Was all in basement in soil. How did you do the cuttings? They say in the why..?????? How did you root them?
Dodge If you Like I'll send you cutting of the charles and Unnamed pink when I cut them back in Nov probably,, I can root for you so all you have to do is put in soil, Cuttings are easy,, Just put in water,, white nodules will appear then white roots,
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Diane your just the most maravelous person I ever came upon. I would love some rooted.......I think my problem is , they cut about Octo or nove. And my climate is already headed into winter and wont root for me.
One year I lost a fist full just putting in water.......Last year I put them directly into soil........Lost most of them again.
I will pay postage to you for them.........Thanks .. Your so angelic.........
I take cuttings every second week of September because any later, school works gets in the way :( I put them in a pot of soil and water real well. I don't water until I see new leaf buds breaking (yes the leaves will all fall off first). If they're smaller cuttings, I put them in water and then into soil as soon as I see little bumps but before roots start growing. For me, cuttings with 'bark' work better than cuttings that are all green.

Thanks again for computer help last nite.........

Your welcome Sweetie!,, Here's the thing,, when I send the rooted cutting you'll have to place in soil and keep in the house until spring,, and really watch them for spider mites and wipe the leaves off with rubbing alcohol at the first sign of spider mites. I will also send Priority mail so they won't have time to freeze!
Kenny I agree barked cuttings are far better But I've also gotten them to root with green cuttings and I always start in water and don't place in soil until I have at least 3 inches of root.

Do your cuttings bloom the first year? I have mine in the basement , and water just a little and the big one went bananas...My small are just starting new leaves and one says Equator ???????????
They all had names that rubbed off in the rain..
Now Diane,
I cant find my video part for the compute rto put stuff on cds ........Do you know where I put it ?
Yes they bloom the first year When it grows and forms a Y in the branches they are more likely to bloom from the Y then Below the Y tho it does happen some will Bloom without a Y growth of branches.
There is a Brug called Ecuador Pink,, Equador pink is this what you have ?
Dodge look in your ALL PROGRAMS for your CD Burner it should be there. right click and open it.

Know what I just found out of my Brugs??????they are nite bloomers. Went out last nite and tonite an caught the suckers wide open. In the day they close............
Are yours day or nite?
Also found out my 4 oclocks are nite bloomers too. Or are they going bonkers?
Brugs and daturas are night bloomers. Also tobacco (Nicotiana), four o clocks, and evening scented stocks. Some people have a little 'night scented garden' around their windows so they smell the flowers even at night :)

lynne, i am thinking i need some brugs for my "moon garden" i am planning. that one is so pretty. maybe you could send me a few seeds? all my gardening will be in the dark from now on, so i'm planning "moon gardens"
Jiffy - I have never gotten any seeds from any of my brugs, but I will have cuttings just before our first hard frost. I don't know about where you live, but here I have to overwinter them indoors.

the seeds are there they are are just hard to spot and get to in time. Jiffy wouldn't have to bring in brugs they can stay in ground all year,, just before the first freeze they would have to be cut down to about 6 inches then covered with leaves , and a bucket or container/pot of some kind with a "Breathing hole"(drain) in it, filled of leaves and turned over on top of the leaves, come spring take off the container, and every few days start to move away the leaves untill they are all taken off and it will grow again. I don't know about them being a MOON type plant,, Mine open during the day ,,, the same ones I sent Lynne (cuttings) (that her are blooming now,,) Sometime they open at night and sometimes day,, in the fall it's day time in the heat of the summer it's mostly very early morning, it takes 2- 3 full days for it to open and reveal it's true color. They require a lot of water and regular feedings,, I consider them a High maintenance plant , particularly in the southern states where it's much hotter for much longer thru the seasons. A Good moon garden flower would be the Moon VINE,, It will give back plenty of seeds,, Low maintenance, just needs water every now and then once established. It produces Big 5 inch white Blooms the hummingbird moths love them.
~
WOW Lynne those cutting I sent you have done AWSOME there for you this year! All that rain you've gotten,, They love all that water,, The Adora's are beautiful!
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
I am zone 9 and maybe even an 8 given my elevation. My brugs are about 7-8 ft tall now and doing well just being treated like most of my other shrubs. Sun most of the day until mid-afternoon. They are late to lose their leaves and early to regrow them in late winter/early spring. I only have to trim for shape or crossed branches and things in early spring. They do like a lot of water. I don't ever remember special feeding. I just toss out whatever I have going about once a year. They do tend to bloom mostly evenings for the best show and scent. But they are beautiful during the daylight hours also. Mine seem to bloom best when there is a full moon.

I don't think The moon matter with them in particular,, Could Be ?? But it's not something I'd vouch too for me anyway,, Mine have bloomed as late as Late November last year,, I feed mine lots when they are showing buds. The last three years I've experimented with them it's been a learning process to say the least. Njoynit taught me most from there I started experimenting, the ones that get afternoon shade don't bloom as well , or as often. The ones with full sun most of the day bloom 'skirts' as Lynne's Charles G., has done this year,, so far she's had 2 skirt flushes,, YEAAAAAAA LYNNE,, and looks like the Adora with have a chance for another Flush! It's interesting how different zones show different growth/ bloom and time of day/night blooming patterns,, ( another learning experience) I like that we members that have them are in different zones and compare notes,, Cooooool!

Quick question: if I don't dig up my brugs in time and there's a light frost, will they be ok? How bout if it's a heavy frost?

Mine have been through frosts of sorts, Kenny. Not like yours maybe but down into the upper 20's in the night for an hour or two. They will lose their leaves but they do come back in spring. I just don't know how they do with heavy frosts. I hope you can get to yours in time to dig them before any major damage.

Kenny,,,a heavy frost will turn them Black then they are done,, IF you can't get them dug up then get some thick cutting below a "Y" to the "y" with give blooms next year.
We've had a weeks worth of rain I have lots of buds on my brugs,, including Dr, suess,, I'm sooooo excited,, Dr, suess didn't grow enough to bloom last year,
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
dodge, gramma's brug was easily 5 1/2 feet tall. as tall as me, or taller. that is the gutters on her back porch you see hiding behind the jasmine behind the brug.
Mine have grown a little taller than the eaves so 8-9 ft?
Mine too My unnamed pink is now at least 2 foot or more above the 7 ft fence It now has at least 30 Buds on it,, The Dr. Suess has 7 and even Charles G finally has ONE the rain sure helped them along!.
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Thats a nice topper, but would need a ladder to smell them!
