It's not a downy woodpecker, but I don't know what. If someone doesn't ID it soon, I will look it up in my book.

Diane, you're finding some interesting birds. I don't think I've seen one of those. Thornius has changed our lives.

That IS a White-Crowned Sparrow. They are not all that common. I've seen two or three in my life. They are generally reported during spring Migration. Good picture! And Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers are STUNNING!!! I saw them a lot when I lived in Texas in the early 70's

I've been getting these in my yard this week as well. This is the first year I have seen them too. I posted a picture of mine this week in another topic. Really cool!

Thanks Lynne, for looking it up and providing the link to confirm,, I also found out the little browner one in the background is a juve.. I figured as much because when the senior flew off so did the little one right behind it, Thorny and Iggygal.. I saw it a few days ago as well but didn't have my camera near me,, .. I hope to see them again,

You Will. Scissor-tails are quite COMMON in Texas. They like to perch on electrical lines or other clear unobstructed perches. Now get out in the country and get us some pictures of Roadrunners. Brown, chicken sized and shaped birds. They can fly but prefer to spend much of their time on the ground.

They are??????????? Yesterday was the first time I'd ever seen them,, so I looked them up when I got home, as I was at work on my lunch break,, I read that Oklahoma see's them Most( state bird) and Nest in 7 states,: breeds from eastern Colorado and Nebraska south to Texas and Louisiana, winters mostly south of border and southern Florida & eats entirely insects and very berries, Spirited defender of territory against crows, hawks, etc. Gregarious in non-breeding season, Male performs acrobatic "sky dance" during courtship which even includes a few reverse summersaults in mid-air! << I Love to see that! I doubt very much I'd see them in the neighborhood,, BUT I will take my camera to work again,, NOW that spring is here I've noticed a few more birds I haven't seen at all. Don't get to the country much unfortunately,, Just too busy to get there. Where I work at( the immediate area) ~( Our building is isolated away from other streets and traffic other than the interstate which Now I can't see because all of the trees have their spring leaves,) is on the list of places for bird watching because of the thicket of trees and Bushes,, Common for hawk nesting ( I know where two are) and various uncommon birds for the region.I sure wish someone would cut a path thru there so I could walk it on my lunch break,, The weeds are as high as my waist No telling what's lurking in there,, also there is a creek back in there,

Another tell-tale sign that you have seen a roadrunner; there will always be a wily coyote trying hard to catch up.

I thought I had seen one on my feeder yesterday, so I just did a google search and found the following map of them - they apparently come through here while migrating for the summer up to Canada. Here is a link to the map so you all can see if they come through or are in your areas. white crowned sparrows

According to that website we are supposed to have them around my area year round. I've never seen one but they are neat looking. Great pictures!

You don't see White-Crowned that often. If some Birder does see one he reports it immediately and tries to get pictures. I have seen only two myself.

They just report them to their friends and associates. You can also keep all your sightings on eBird. They permanently store your sightings and also make your records available to others for research. eBird is free and is the BEST site on the Web.

If you go to my link, as Diane has suggested, there is a link there to the ebird sightings.
