I love it when things go on sale.

Springhill nursery sent me some sale information.

I got the variegated weigela and the primroses that I wanted out of the sale. Combined my order will cost 29.00 dollars this fall. That's not bad considering that the weigela normally would cost me that much.

I was going to start a thread about flower bargains, but will post here instead since you started this one.

Last week I was at the new Lowes that opened a month ago. The first 2 weeks all their plants were nice and healthy, but once the honeymoon was over, they now look mostly fried, just like at every other box store!

I really had wanted to buy some flowers that day - needed some cheering up, so I looked and looked and looked - on my way out there were some 3 tiered carts in the parking lot. I found some really nice, new pentas in 6 inch pots on a shelf that had a sign that said $2.28. Now I know that was wrong! I have paid at least $3.50 for pentas in 3-4 inch pots! So I grabbed 4 and went back inside to pay. Of course they rang up at $4.98, but I told the girl there were many of them by this sign. She walked out with me to look, wrote down the UPC number on the sign and only charged me the $2.28! I don't feel too badly about that, because these stores trash so many plants, let them dry out and die, and overcharge anyway. At least these will have a loving place at my house.

Ladies---you both have done so well--both of you have found great bargains.

Lynne---this will be the first year that I will not have Pentas in the mulched bed at this house. I really like them.

Is the penta the one with the pink flowers? I definitely would not feel bad about asking them to charge you what is on the sign. I hate bait and switch. I think it may even be illegal to some extent.

I love the variegated weigelas too. I'm hoping that I'll be able to take cuttings from them and get several going. Of course my track record with cuttings is anything but good but I keep on trying.

Yes, they are the pink flowers.
They also come in red, white, lavender, purple, or shades of pink. Some are even two-toned.

I prefer the red ones, although I must admit that the deep pink are attractive.

They look like miniature hydrangas sort of.

I went out to get the mail. I should no better than doing that this time of year. Yep there was a brecks catalog in there. They are doing BOGO also. I guess it's a change from 25.00 off. Anyway I got myself some goodies that I'll pay for in the fall.

I got 24 Alpine Rosy Bells for late spring blooming. I need more blooms this time of year. And I got 30 Early Stardrift. These have been on my wish list for awhile. I keep trudging towards my 4 seasons garden and this pushes the limit father into spring. That is since the rodents ate all of my crocuses.

So have you seen any goodies out there in the garden centers that you couldn't resist?

Tammy - the blooms on the pentas don't really look like hydrangeas - each flower in the cluster is a tubular star - that is why the hummingbirds are supposed to like it. I try to plant at least one each summer for both the hummers and butterflies who also like it.

I'm not familiar with Rosy Bells or Stardrifts - what kind of plants are they?

Here in Canada we have a 'scanning code of practice' - if the scanned price is above the price on the shelf, the customer is entitled to have the item for free if it's under $10 or have $10 off the first item it it's over $10. Any other same item would be charged the price as the shelf price

The supermarket garden center across the street was selling 4" square pots of lavender for about $4 each...I stopped by the farmer's market with my mom and picked up 3 for $5 the same size and just as healthy! I also got 2 6" pots of roses for $4 each. I've had great luck with keeping those supermarket mini roses in the ground, but these ones just say "...survive winter in most regions of North America." crossing my fingers.

I do not think it was bait and switch at all. I think it was simply a case of an employee either putting the wrong sign on the wrong shelf, or the wrong plants on the shelves. The caliber of intelligence that works at these places is not so high, I'm very sorry to say. They wouldn't know a dandelion from a dahlia if push came to shove!

The rosy bells and the stardrifts are both bulbs. The stardrifts bloom early spring and the rosy bells late spring. Both times when I'm short on blooms right now. The rosy bells are about 10 inches in height. They look sort of like very short alliums creating a ball of blossoms that are pink in color.

The stardrift are a very pale blue star like flower that grows in clusters. They are between 4 and 6 inches tall.
