I have been looking at previous postings on bleeding hearts and haven't come up with an anwer to my problem.

We have a large pine tree close to front of our home, a flower bed is located about 6 ft max from the base of the tree. When we moved here 4 years ago, there was a bleeding heart planted to the front of the bed, it bloomed briefly and then the leaves and stems turned yellow and appeared to be dying. I trimmed off this areas.

The next spring, I transplanted the bleeding heart further to the back of the bed, only about 3 ft back, hoping this would help the plant to endure the pine tree needles, etc. It bloomed one time this year for a short period, then stopped. Again, I have yellow leaves and stems which make it appear to be dying. I trimmed off the yellowed stems and leaves; the stems are "hollow" inside and are dead at the base. Is this normal?

I should mention that the pine tree does drip sap but I didn't think it was reaching the back of the bed.

Can someone help me?

Bleeding hearts do die off in the heat of summer. That is their life cycle so yours seem to be doing what they are meant to do. When someone comes up with a longer blooming, heat tolerant one they will be on the road to riches.

Thank you, Jonni, I appreciate the info. For some reason, I was thinking they had a longer blooming period. Being a newby to gardening, assumptions don't alwsys work! Thanks again!
