my m.i.l. gave us 10 or so pears from her pear tree. they are all hard as a rock. you can't even get your teeth into them safely. I guess because of the extreamly dry summer we've had?
I thought about cutting up and cooking for a cobbler or pie, but then I thought.....?????... I've never heard of a pear cobbler or a pear pie.
I hate to waste home grown anything, but I'm clueless? why

sounds like "sand pears" cricket. those are cooking pears.

peel, pare, and boil them in sugar water until they are almost tender. then make your cobbler or pie out of them, just like you would apple.

if they are sand pears, the skin will be thick and bumply. but they taste good. i love to get them and can them. and one day i'll have a couple of trees.

thanks jiff!
what's the sugar water ratio?

and, as hard as these pears are, how will I even know when I've gotten to the core? lol I haven't cut one open yet, maybe it's as simple as it should be?
the peel is not bumpy. they are a very beautiful light green, and some have a hint of red on one side.

now that you mention it, I guess a pear pie would be very similiar to an apple pie.

thanks again. thumbup

you'll know. seeds grin

as for the sugar water, when i'm canning, i use about 2 cups to a big canning pot. so for you, i'd say about 1/2 cup of sugar? something like that.
