It seems to work on just one page for the info you have there. And when people need specifics there are more pages to go to.

If you notice any spelling, punctuation, open tags showing or any other oh oh's on any of these pages, please let me know! After staring at the same text for hours I sometimes become blind to things that are staring me in the face. I promise that I won't be offended!

I re-structured both pages...

http://www.thegardenhelper.com/growingseeds.html

Was I able to fix the side scrolling issue?

Sad to say after all you r hard work I still have to scroll. But ya know if Tina & cindy say it is ok perhaps it is me and my IE???

and like I say, it is no big deal----it is not like I will miss out on some info---I can see ALL the info/buttons at one time, and miss out only on the ads. & if I want to read the advertisements, I really do not need to have access to the buttons--so not to worry. I love the font size & colors & such----of course the information is great---(have not had time to check for typos yet.... blush)

Well, I tried... and I don't mind trying to fix things like the scroll, because when I go back I keep learning new tricks and stuff that help me on future fixes I will need to make, and how to not make the same errors again.

Todays page was written in early 1999 when I didn't know a thing about what I was doing. I invented my own code as I went along, and somehow I managed to get the look I wanted. I had no idea at all about the #1 rule of html was that every starting tag requires a closing tag until one day a nice lady wrote to me and patiently explained some rules I wasn't following. The page probably had a hundred opens and 30 closers. I had to fix a lot of pages with oh oh's and was already busy busy, so I invented another billhtml rule to do a quick fix until I had time to redo it right. 10 years later, I finally got back to fixing my page. I had long forgotten about the tag rule and the nice lady and MY special codes and fixes. To do it correctly you should close your tag immediately after the function is performed. ie a centered line tag closes at the end of the line or italicized word tag closes at the end of the word....
Wherein comes my special 'no no' coding that survived on a functioning web page for ten years!
teach My secret fix is finally about to be revealed.....
drumroll please?
Waaaaaaaaaaaay down at the bottom of the page I put all of the end tags for the entire page in one long line... there were many more tags in the list but...
</font></font></font></font></font></i></I></CENTER</CENTER><CENTER</font></font></i>
I'm sure Mr Gizmo and other pros will appreciate the magnitude and insanity of Wild Willys own version of the html code. I agree... it was very bad stuff because that pretty much eliminated my credibility as a webmaster, and scared the search engines away...
but... that page has been viewed by tens of thousands of people who viewed the page as I had intended, without a clue that the page shouldn't have even shown up.... blush It used looked
Bla Bla Bla.....
OK.... I completely redesigned, added to, and revised many parts of this page, so even if you read it before I think you'll enjoy a quick re-read... maybe not...
After I get any input from you all, I will do some final polishing and
Sluggy will finally, at long last, be proper and correct!
bow

The 'notice' at the bottom is because a biologist wrote and set me straight on the facts about bananas in no uncertain terms. The 'notice' is my insurance of no lectures this time. Not sure how the notice will work when applied to the WW episode with the recipe for "perfectly sauteed Lawn Prawns" haha

While updating the Hummingbird Page I searched all the names in the list of flowers and was able to update a great many of the flowers to links to profile pages or pix pages with the pages I made after I put the hummer page together. When I started today only 4 of the flowers had any information attached to them at all...

I spent the last couple days finding and cutting out pictures of Butterflies, among other things...
Obviously, I still have some cleaning up to do on the page, but this is what just went online...

My internet is still flakey so some times it is hard for me to make speed judgments. Did everything load fairly fast (considering the number of images)
Does everything fit where you think it should fit (single line of BFs on top?)
Now I need to edit the buttons...

On one of you're first links at the top of this topic http://www.thegardenhelper.com/freewallpaper.html has a gray lines one on each side that is off center,,,, is the gray lines supposed to be there?

Other wise the font size is great,, the italicized words seem light in color but readable in all links ,, and all the link on buttons worked accordingly , and everything fit nicely on every page,,, again great job Wild Willy thumbup

The second line isn't supposed to be there... it's a background problem.

I only have one page to list this morning, but it actually took 26 different pages to make the one page work... rolz

I have to get going now, Bill, but I will come and check out all the graphics later today.

I did check oput a few of the bar graphics though. (mainly Christmas ones) I clicked on the "sleigh ride" bar graphic I got nothing but a red X in a box--all of the other Christmas bars I tried worked though.

I will beback to check more later.--of to appointments now.....

There are a couple hundred plant profile and 'how to" pages that I wrote after I put the directories together so I am back tracking and cataloging them into the directories. My site mapping software has been going non-stop for 27 hours now and has indexed 33,867 TGH pages so far.... then I will have to do a lot of editing (weeks?), but the finished map will be a nice, HUGE reference source for everyone. As I edit the sitemap I will add a lot more pages to the categorized directories (like 'Flowering Trees and Shrubs', 'shade plants', 'alkaline soil plants' etc.)

(up to 34,190 pages now, and searching slowly... after editing, there will only be half that many for the finished map.)

so I guess me printing it all out & putting the pages in sheet protectors, & then in a binder is out of the question, HUH???

Boy that is sure an ambitious undertakiong, Bill.-----
That is such a kind thing to do---to make all the information you provide for people easier to access. such a wonderful thing for you to do.
I know I will appreciate it.

It would certainly make a big book!
I'd wait until I get the directories finished, at least.... Maybe I should put a disk together? (in my spare time lol )

yea--do that------in your spare time haha (Bill, do you even have spare time??? I sometimes wonder when you sleep. why

no, seriously, what I will do is as I use something I will print it out & add it to my "gardening" binder--I use the big 4 inch binders they sell for school kids---you can print up a page identifying what the binder is for and slip it in the front or back binder sleeve (& even the end if you have the time & energy.) it works out great.

a disk does sound cool though......you could add it to the items you have for sale--you do still sell cups & such, right??

I have a garden helper cup & mangnet thumbup

No, we quit selling stuff quite a while back....

After spidering pages for 33 hours the final page count for my sitemap is 36,753 pages. I have a lot of editing to do, but here is the first draft of The Garden Helper Sitemap docs

You'll have to be pretty bored to look through all the links, but there is a LOT of good info in there. haha

Oh, my there is a lot of info there. Might just need a multi-disc set. I just love your search/google feature that searches the site. It is awesome to help guide me to info I want to know.

If you are remotely interested in seeing a 'before and after' of a page make-over, I am working on http://www.thegardenhelper.com/viningplants.html right now and the online version is still circa 1997. I won't be going to bed until it is finished and online.
Most of the re-makes so far have had little in the way of changes other than the face-lift....
This page will have a LOT of new info, so there will be a big difference to see before and after... breakfast

I did yesterday so had to go and try today.
I 'fits' the rest of the forum now and it doesn't open in a new window. (I know that because I 'x-ed' out of it and closed the forum. Had to open a new window and come back in. lol)

first let me say I love the format of these pages--it was so easy to read, undertand & navigate from & back to.
I esp love the use of symbols & the key in the Perennial Rock Garden Plant profile--
I also appreciate being able to look at some of the photos & then read what members have said in the past----old info is still good AND applicable.
Thanks much. bow

These pages are very well done, Bill. The background is a bit dark on my PC but I can still read it and that is great considering I have a hard time reading many sites at all.

What a handy format you've chosen. Thanks much.

Yep... from some "Master Gardener"
He even had the nerve to hot link back to MY images (which don't show up on his site, thanks to Mr. Gizmo! lol
tapfoot That's right up there with stealing a guy's Garden gnomes (or frogs) out of his own yard! uhuhh

About 2 years ago, some woman (with money) decided that she liked my site name so she paid for garden-helper.com to be built for her... Kinda P'd me off and still does, madd but today I discovered that some guy liked HER site name and started his site garden-helpercom.com. clap
That got me laughing pretty good! lol
Bet that neither of them will ever make it into Time magazine though! neener

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Bill, but to me this is just plain theft and bad manners.

I was in Seventeen Magazine once too... but I don't have a link or anything for it... It was for 'Plant a tree for Arbor Day' or something...

It's here, somewhere, in one of those mountains of 'stuff and things'. There is stuff here that has remained unseen since 1982. Ask Cindy... we went treasure hunting in the back (ick) room one day when she was here

haha haha sounds like a house after my own heart. I am not a hoarder but I do like to keep my stuff.---I need walls of shelves with labeled containers on them down in my basement. That to me would be heaven.

If yo ever fine it you must let us know---then you need to frame the whole book, yea ya do !!!

and ok I will ask Cindy one day soon.

fantastic, Bill. That is what I like (and I am sure I am not alone) simple & straight forward instructions, that many people can understand.

I am guessing I could treat my lilac bush the same way???
