HARK......JAMES ,
TODAYS story .. I went out and purchased a new computer and moniter. Brought them home , started to assemble them. Got as far as plug the moniter into the tower.. Is when I discovered the plug was not compatible. Back in the box with that dude......Store here it comes.
Was able to plug the new computer into my old moniter ......All went well , till I try to put my internet online. It kept saying some hardware was missing???????????? I burned my brain for a great while and at last resort I did get my server online, and it didnt work......Looked at my Phone an it was not working.
So I start a new journey. Why? Goes back to the install internet and read more, clicks on something that says With this machine, Dialup and Broadband will not work.
Hubby at the end of his rope by then, grabs the box from the computer to read. No book for it . It said on the side of the box ......No Modem.......Can you beat that ??????
I come to the conclusion that the 2009 new computers with window 7 will not work with Dial up and broadband.........If you have a computer under 1009 , chances are , you wont be able to buy hardware to work on them.. No one in the walmart alerted me to that.. THey were so busy..
After all the pitter patter..............I put it all back and turned on the old computer, and everything is working swell again>>>>>>>>>( maybe an angel in my closet after all. All I could do is read email on it last nite ......No surfin the net.
What do you think of my story James.......I been taught a bundle.

Yeh, monitors commonly have 1 of 3 connections: 1- HDMI 2- DSUB 3- DVI (Some can have an SVideo port as well) If you look at this picture of a video card, you can see a DSUB (the small, blue (not always blue!)), a DVI (the large, commonly white) and an SVideo. Most monitors now adays have DSUB (or an HDMI; both are "high quality" video), most older computers (or cheaper video cards) have DSUB's. You might just order a monitor on newegg, probably cheaper and usually free shipping... if you want I can help you look for one

Well, it's common for comptuers not to come with modems; most people have broadband so they only need a network card.
You can get modems that work with Windows7 just fine; I have modem drivers on two of my windows7 machines that work fine (though I don't use dialup for them)
Don't buy hardware at walmart, they'll talk out of their butt; you buy hardware at newegg.com (or ask me and I'll give you links).
I would totally recommend Windows7 over Windows Vista; much more user friendly.

Mog,
Let me explain ........I purchased a cheap emachine .. (Returned it also) First thing I found out, it knocked out my telephone>>>>>.Why??
Then it kept saying hardware missing.. At the time I didnt know. My husband looked at the box an sure enough no modem....... Windows 7 part I loved .but it didnt have a modem......
Now I am seeing on the shelves, H P new computers and in small print it has, This machine will need extra hardware an shop installing of windows 7. My friend had to take hers to the shop to put windows 7 in.
If you know which computers today carry the windows 7 an modem, I am intrested .. Pm it if you wish.
I would love the windows 7............ No I arent intrested in the moniters ......prefer to get a package with one in it. emachine came with out a moniter........ I got all my money back.
Only 2 stores in our area carry computers.. Staples/walmart.......Leaning lots toward laptops.........
Thanks for your time..Glad you have windows 7.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't buy a computer in Walmart to be able to let you know...
What it is, was Win7 JUST came out a cple weeks ago, so when they recived their stock of the models they have it wasnt' out yet, hence why you don't have it.
Most computers you buy today won't have a modem, that's just "advancements" in technology; you can pick up a cheap modem for like $9
You might go towards BestBuy if you had to buy from one of those shops

Norton is kind of worthless now adays, they sold out to Symantec so it's not even the same quality that you've grown to love... Avast is free for personal use, and is one of the largest antivirus companies around now adays.
As for the modem, your motherboard has a long white slot called a PCI slot; the modem just plugs in there. I believe they even have USB modems now (which I've never actually used since don't use a modem lol)

"Computer"? Not really, but I have been known to build the occasional computer for people, and "fix" issues here and there; why do you ask?

MOg,
Cause your one of the few and far between , who understands computer questions.
Even my server DID NOT KNOW WHAT MY PROBLEM WAS. He very firmly ordered me to get my machine to a reliable shop to fix.
I didnt ........After I unplugged the new one an put the old back, it was back to normal.......Would you suspect it is like our satellite dishes. that need unplugged now an then to reset?
That is why I wanted Norton first to clean my machine...I think it did ??? Another girl told me she had Avast.
Thanks.

'eh my first troubleshooting tip for anything is to reboot; it's the only way some system changes can push through all the way... and it works about 90% of the time.

Well, if you connect to the internet so you can read mail, you're online, so you should be able to browse the web just fine; not sure why you can't...
"Not Responding" generally means that there is a resource issue and the app isn't any longer working; have you tried another browser? (opera, firefox, etc)
As for "no dialtone", most modems have to ports, one for a phone and one for the phone line; have you tried connecting a phone into the second port and checking the dialtone manually?

I tried the last one about phone jack .. With a different server.
However not this one.. Right now all is fine...... Norton cleaned something

Well, wireless internet is differant... You have a wireless router you'd use a standard wireless network card; if you're connecting to an antenna, it'd be whatever hardware they say you need... (as it'd be a wireless internet card versus a wireless network card as you'd be connecting to their hardware antenna).
There are differant types as well, you'd probably either have a PCI card they'd send you (or you'd buy) or an external box that you'd connect a network card to via a networking cable...

Well, he has a laptop, it has a built in Wireless Network Card (they are now pretty much standard when buying a laptop).
You can buy them for desktops or laptops seperately as well; but there are no guarantees that your neighbors are going to have wireless, let alone a wide open network.
I have two wireless networks here, neither are open :P
