Last year they cleared the berries off our hollies in no time flat then pooped all over my driveway, car and one side of the house. It was a mess. There were so many of them. I sort of home they don't show up this year.

I have been trying my best to care for an injured one for a few weeks. (I named him Pud). The neighbor's cat murdered Pud yesterday... So sorry, Bill.......

Gosh Bill, I'm sorry about that. Our cat kills birds too. She killed an eastern bluebird a few weeks ago and I nearly had a coronary. We had put up a bluebird box last spring and babied that box along and had 3 sets of fledglings and then to have one murdered. I don't know why some cats are such hunters. Thank you Juniegirl. It's great to see cardinals and woodpeckers. I don't see many woodpeckers. I'm going to put some peanut butter on a tree and see if they come to dinner.

Thanks Thornius. I don't think I'll ever learn. The brown thrasher and wood thrush look alike to me. I didn't even know I had dark eyed Juncos around here. Live and learn.
Diane, still reading my Birds and Blooms magazine and there's an article about spreading peanut butter on the truck of a tree, up high, so the birds feel safe. If you get it high enough they won't fly away as quickly as they do from a feeder. I'm gonna give that a try.
do you see them every day?

yes I either hear them or see them daily Both at home and at work. Well I guess I'll get a ladder and smear Peanut butter,, But I bet the red squirrels get it first, they are trying their best to get into the suet cage

What do you just smear pnut butter on something for them? Our cats help the birds eat. Today it was leftover potato chips. Cats ate the ones on the ground. b

The article said to smear it on the tree trunk but Diane is right. The squirrels will have a picnic - not gonna do it.

I also Put peanut butter on apple slices the mocking birds like it other birds pick at it and the Bluejays carry off what is left I place it in-between the slats of the wood fence It's so funny to see the squirrel pull at it, I push it down pretty snug

Peanuts, peanut butter, and Black Oil Sunflower seeds are about the best things you can use in your feeders. In the U.K. they mainly use shelled peanuts in wire cages for the birds. Here, we use more Black Oil Sunflower seeds. Even the suet I use has high concentrations of peanut butter and BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower seeds)!.

TSC (Tractor Supply Company) has the BEST feed prices. I get a 50 pound bag of Black Oil Sunflower seed there for about $14.00 and a three month supply of Rabbit Chow for TWO rabbits for $10.00. and I love to wander the aisles there and look at all the weird and cool farm stuff!

I use Rabbit manure and the shredded newspaper from their cages for my flowers and the poorer soil areas of my yard. The results are amazing!

Diane, thanks for the information. I will be sure to look around in mine the next time I am in that part of the woods.
Thorny: back when we had a rabbit, I used to dump his cage out in my garden in the winter time.
I thought it helped it too.

Could be! Check the bill. A Hairy's bill is the length of the head. The Downy's bill is about 1/3 the length of the head. Also a Hairy is 1 1/2 times bigger than a Downy. A Hairy is close to a Robin in size while a Downy is more of a Sparrow-sized bird

Not an Egret, but a Great Blue Heron a close relative of the Egrets. They are very common next to water. In the South we have more of them in Winter than in Summer. The Northern herons migrate into the South. They are superb and graceful flyers despite their HUGE size. I ALWAYS try to catch them in flight.
