The female is the top picture, the male is the bottom picture. I had about 30 House Sparrows and a couple of Mockingbirds at my feeders today. This bird has the adorable nickname, "Butter Butt". They like peanut flavored suet and like to hang out in suburban yards in Winter. Kingdoms RAGE and go to war...but the PEasants plant potatoes.. MASSIVE snowstorm expected here Thursday and Friday. Been having snow showers here all day and the Starlings are forming huge flocks and are feeding on the ground. But of late I am hard pressed to even see a sparrow & 1 or 2 finches. I have never even seen a Cardinal, so you are lucky! The pig pukes next door have been shooting my Stellar Jays (for fun?) I have been trying my best to care for an injured one for a few weeks. (I named him Pud). He is beginning to know his name, but he is getting very fat and sassy lately. I am beginning to wonder if he is faking his limp just to keep getting his 'special' food. I guess that's ok though.... He's pretty special to me!

This robin was so close to me I could have reached out and touched him. The cedar tree outside our upstairs bathroom was full of them today. I've never seen so many in one place and when I opened the window to take a picture they didn't fly away.

It was a mess. There were so many of them. I sort of home they don't show up this year.

Our cat kills birds too. She killed an eastern bluebird a few weeks ago and I nearly had a coronary. We had put up a bluebird box last spring and babied that box along and had 3 sets of fledglings and then to have one murdered. I don't know why some cats are such hunters. Thank you Juniegirl. It's great to see cardinals and woodpeckers. I don't see many woodpeckers. I'm going to put some peanut butter on a tree and see if they come to dinner.

I don't think I'll ever learn. The brown thrasher and wood thrush look alike to me. I didn't even know I had dark eyed Juncos around here. Live and learn. Diane, still reading my Birds and Blooms magazine and there's an article about spreading peanut butter on the truck of a tree, up high, so the birds feel safe. If you get it high enough they won't fly away as quickly as they do from a feeder. I'm gonna give that a try. do you see them every day?

In the U.K. they mainly use shelled peanuts in wire cages for the birds. Here, we use more Black Oil Sunflower seeds. They are very common next to water. In the South we have more of them in Winter than in Summer. The Northern herons migrate into the South. They look almost identical to Mourning Doves but notice that white stripe on the bottom of the wing? Mourning Doves do NOT have that stripe. I THINK you might have an Orange-Crowned Warbler, there!!! I thought at first you might have a Tennessee Warbler there, but they are FAR south of the U.S. border this time of year. Orange-Crowned Warblers spend the Winter in Texas and are VERY close in appearance to a Tennessee Warbler. SO I believe you have a female Orange-Crowned Warbler there! I've only seen what i think was a red eyed Vireo in my life. it stopped by my feeders out at the farm (prior to Dec 2004) ate & was off. It was fall, right before the hummingbirds left. I immediately looked it up and I am thinking that is what it was. ________ Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
