never stake ours. They do bend over on top, but like you say, are thick .

well yes and no--if you were here looking,- the Mammoth have a definate advantage over the Black oil, just not a large one.

and Sheri--I took a pic of the tallest Black Oil plant.

I planted a poke of Mammoth yesterday, the seeds were only about the third of the flowers I had last year?

The flower heads don't look as large as the ones dodge had last year though.

Yes the heads develope later. I sow lasts years an some mammoth .
THe mammoth isnt near as large as the ones I collected?????

Not sure what they are.

Of course our season isnt that far along for sunflowers an corn as yet>

Doing well girls.

Your head needs to be larger than this to win.

The Black oil seeds were just an experiment--

we are in this race with our Mammoth Sunflower seeds. YERP!!!!

I thought one took the mature heads off so the seeds could dry ?

that is if the birds leave any on head while it was still growing.

i dont know that procedure.. The birds were cleaning the headsoff quickly standing in the garden.. You hide an watch.

mine are no where as tall as Johnny is but i did plant mine several weeks after sheri's--it gets warmer later here after all

Below is 2 flower heads of the Black oil Sunflower plants.
They are not a lot more than 4 feet tall but they already have heads.
The flower shown here is only about 4 to 5 inches across.
