Some of mine have started drooping. I thought they needed water but I looked online and found out that when they start making seeds (the head that is) they start drooping and need less water than when they are growing. What I read said once the head makes seed to cut it off to dry otherwise the seeds might mold before they dry. Is this what you do dodge?

I arent up on sunflower doings.

I let them on till the birds eat them off. I think it would mold if picked too soon.
Birds will start to eat them right away.

The ones I picked , was cause I wanted photos of the birds close to the windoww.
have to look that up.

Read this ..

When can I harvest my garden sunflowers? How will I know they are ready? How do I roast them?
The heads will be ready to harvest when the back of the head has turned brown. In northern areas, this might be after the first killing freeze. In warmer areas, the plant will dry down naturally. Simply snip the head off the plant and rub the seeds out by hand. If birds or other pests are attacking your sunflower heads, you can cut the heads and hang them in your garage like onions often are dried. But you need to ensure that the seeds are mature. Look for the back of the head to be a banana yellow to turning brown before you harvest the heads. Remove any other plant debris. See our recipe section for guidance on how to roast sunflower seeds.

I'm not going to roast them. I'm going to leave them for the birds. I just don't want them to mold. I've never heard of that but we do have horrible humidity so maybe it can be a problem. I haven't seen any birds on them yet just a whole lot of bees. I've got little tiny ones coming up in all sorts of places. It's funny to me that they will bloom when they're only 12 inches tall.

I took a photo of the mammoth sunflowers but it was a bad shot--I will try again tomorow.

Carol - my black oil sunflower is the same size as yours - pretty even though they are small.
