Fermented pickles are so easy to make with cooled boiled water, piokling salt, a little garlic and dill and let sit out with a loose lid until soured or until the water in the jar starts to cloud. What I wanted to try is to add a little sugar to the water for a slightly sweet and sour taste, and wanted to know if I do this, will it still ferment?

Sugar is a natural bacterial inhibitor. Look up more crock pickle recipes online. You will find some with sugar boiled with the water.
