Carol, I've had my Christmas cactus in filtered sunlight for 3 years. It's been in front of a window but doesn't get direct sun. I water it when it's totally dry. This is the first year it's bloomed. I've never put mine in darkness.

Sorry to jump in, I have a related question. I had my Christmas cactus in the same window for about five years, bloomed like crazy from October through April, every year without fail. This year we moved. I had blooms in October but it suddenly stopped and now nothing. I haven't done anything different. Could it be a life cycle change or could it have been due to our move. I left where it is, have not changed anything about it, should I just leave it be and see what happens? Thanks for your thoughts :O)

Juniegirl, I have a friend who brought an almost dead Christmas cactus home from her daughters house. She watered it a little, sat it in a window and says it's bloomed every single year without moving it or doing anything except watering it once a week. Go figure.
