Yesterday evening I had a blue colored bird come a calling at my thistle feeder. It was too large a bird to be a indigo bunting, and really not so bright a blue--so I am assuming it was a blue grosbeak (?) Also, is a BG and a blue finch actually the same bird?? I TRIED looking up pictures on my computer last night, but it was to no avail. I truely miss The World Book Encyclopedia we had when I was young!!

Junie, go to the online database at whatbird.com. You can use that database to slowly eliminate all but a handful of birds that meet your description, and then choose from the pictures of that handful.

Thanks Thorny---I had gone to that site before I posted this thread---and I had no luck deciding--But at your prompting I tried again---I think in must have been a Blue Grosbeak--Thanks for the advise. I am beginning to wonder if my yard is on a bird flight pattern or something---In all the years I lived on the "farm" not 2 miles away---I did not ever have this kind of color in my yard---(not that I am complaining)

As we say in birding it all boils down to Location, Location, Location......(and habitat). I have totally DIFFERENT species of birds in my backyard than my front yard. They occasionally mix, but my house provides an effective barrier to keep the different kinds of birds separated.

You are right---And I must say while I love & miss my old yard---I truly delight in the variety of birds I get here.
