I use ginger as a medicinal herb. Can I grow a plant or plants from a piece of ginger root I buy in the grocery store? Will it spread to more than one plant? How do I dry it to make a ginger powder like you'd buy in the spices section of the store?

I am not sure about one you buy in store (has it been treated in some way?) but I have ginger growing in some of my flower plots and it dies down in winter and seems to spread each year. I have more than one shoot coming of the root. Hope this helps.

How To Grow GingerAs for making ginger powder, I found this info: 30/1/2007 Question
How to make ginger powder from raw ginger? What is the yeild of ginger powder from raw ginger? What is the price of ginger powder for quantity purchase? Answer
The dry ginger is passed through a pulveriser and ground to 40 mesh size to obtain ginger powder. The powdered ginger is fumigated if necessary and packed. There is no question of percentage (other than recovery of 16-25% of dry ginger). I use ginger root almost on a daily basis for making ginger tea and for cooking. I buy the roots from grocery stores. Unused ginger roots can be stored in a cool dry place for several weeks or in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator unit.

I planted a chunk of grocery store ginger a few years ago. (In the ground) It took awhile for the leaves to come, but it did grow. At the very least, it's the best way to keep fresh ginger around in the summer time. It will last till a freeze comes or you dig it up.
