Dodge, You make some wonderful things with your serger!
Many who sew are afraid of the serger but you seemed to have mastered using it.

Thanks ......I was a Seamstress at 5 different sewing factors and I was on many types of machines......I loved the serger most.
Sergers we used to make the stretchy clothing.......Like tank tops t shirts sweats shirts pants ....All the new silky like pants and shorts are serger .. Open some of your stretch tops and look at the seams........Underwear. Most famous is blue jean done on sergers......It takes out the bulk in the seams and makes it so neat ......... Yes lots are afraid of sergers......They are my favorite and quick. Made work handkies last week on the serger for hd......No need to use the straight one for the work ones........I used a new bedsheet for the cotton handkies.
What is fantastic about the machine, it sews and cuts the seam at the same time. We took out soooooo many errors in cuttings in the factorys.. I am retired now an just goof off.
Sibyl, I think a lot of it is the machine your using. My machine is a $99 Singer POS from walmart. I hate the thing, the thread is always messing up and the stitches aren't always consistant. But, it beats the heck outta doing it by hand. lol I took a class on Cotton Theory and my machine broke, so I got to use their brand new Bernina. Oh, god, it's heaven. Let me tell you. Pure joy. Computerized stitch length, readout, and an easy-threader. And it was on clearance for only $600.
Dodge, I'm afraid that I didn't get it. We thought about how we could pay for it without charging it but we just couldn't. That is a lot more than a house payment for us and is about 3.5 car payments. It would have been so nice. But I'm only 24 and I'll have one when we're a little more financially sound.
Smart girl.......I been down that road.. Your younger than my son........They have a new baby , 8 months old.. Mortage, don't know what else..... But having a home an car is a must when you work.
Some day you will ........I am retired and didnt buy the good machine for a great while.. I have a walmart machine and it isnt the greatest one . I know ladies who invest thousands of dollars in machine, but they sell things at craft shows etc,......You need to have a business to justify the pricy ones.....
Also one thing I do know....One machine will not do all things........Like if your sewing Jeans , You need a jean machine that is very strong and reliable.Another machine to put the rivets on the jeans...... See Just like one needs special machines to do special decorations. In the factories they have all different machines, which one cant afford .
I would love to have a quilting machine.....But it is very pricey and would need to have some where to sell ........Not easy.
good advice dodge! i'm still sewing on a $200 singer, although, it would be a lot more now, it's a good machine, about middle of the line for when i got it.
i'll have a better one one day, but i'll always keep "old faithful"
Singer is a good machine.. The older simplier ones are the easiest for the home sewer to fix.
I found my serger online in california, and it was about 200 dollars cheaper than our local stores.....About 6 or more years ago....... The method I always used for buying things for the home, If i cant pay it cash, I dont need it ...........
My singer really isn't in the best shape. Adam, my hubby, has tried to "fix" it and "tune it up." Both times I've had to take it to my machine's best friend in the business, Bill, who often fixes the thing for free or very cheap. When I buy a machine, it will probably be from him. Although Bill never says it's a hunk o'junk, he does say it's "seen more miles than most." I'll have to get some pics of the other quilts tomorrow to post.
I can't wait for more pics!! I want to go sew instead of go to work today. OK??
I have 2 3 machines. One is Grandmas antique, found it on the street put out for junk, grandpa never could get it to work right, cabinet machine. The first hand me down is a singer in its own table, folds down inside, from the70's machine, a plastic gear broke apart and I havent gotten it fixed (no$$). Then I got my friend Lynnes machine when she died. Its probably late 70;s also. I think a JCPenney brand ??? Which now sits on top of the singers table, so its just a bit too high for cofort. I guess i need a little taller chair. A new machine with all the fancy stitches & embroidery stuff is on my 'when I win lottery' list.
I have 7 oldies settin her of no use except 2......... All broke . 2 of them are my husbands grandparents machines.....Broke the belts I have to look .......I think singers ..
Thank you all for sharing your pictures! You have made some wonderful projects! I haven't sewn since Home Ec class which was a long time ago. I would like to get a sewing machine and see what I can learn.
Jessica ,no harm in learning...... My friend has a machine that imbroiderys and makes me things, like deco pillows and bookmarkers, nad my favorite, is 2 penguins dress for winter.. I framed it an hung it on my wall........
Every year we trade stuff ......I love her work.. She did a quilt by hand for my granddaughter.. free.. Now thats a friend.
My most recent quilt (this winter) for my Rachael's top bunk, Just using up scraps I had. It's a 9-patch with a poorly-thought out color graduation. Machine pieced, hand quilted. The second is my entirely by-hand queen quilt, a non-traditional double wedding ring. The last is a full-size quilt, again for Rachael, for her bottom bunk which is now Lindsay's. Hand-quilted.
Last but not least, the only afghan that I still have. I made a lot but when I moved out my mother claimed that they were hers, so I don't have any of them. Made for my eldest aka Rachael. Also, this is a cotton theory quilt. I made it for Lindsay, it was a lot of fun to make and didn't require quilting which is great.
I've made plenty of baby quilts but never thought to take pics before giving them out as gifts. Same as the larger quilts. It seemed the nicer they were, they were ones that got gifted.
~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.
All that hand quilting is special for the ones who get them.
I have about 3 or 4 quilt tops I need to finish and all these pictures make me want to get busy!

I have a Golden Touch and Sew Singer. Before I was married, I bought it--cash. it was around 1973 or so. It cost me $500.00. I for the life of me do not know what a single girl thought she was doing, buying such an expensive machine. But the older me has been happy many times that I DO have it, because the married me could never have bought it. It is messed up in the tension. I have taken it to singer repair shops and to just plain sewing machine repair shops--they all say they have fixed this or that but after a few weeks the machine is back to the same old same old. I have the name of another repairman that I am going to try.--we shall see.
It is not a big hurry though, because I do not do so much sewing these days, since the girls are not home any longer.

yes, Sarah nice quilts.
When I was young & single, I embroidered pre-quilted baby blankets for my niece & nephew, as shower gifts. Then later, I would make doll quilts for my niece. I think I said earlier, but I am currently quilting 2 Christmas Tree skirts that I made for my girls. They are basically round quilts made with christmas material.

That is sad .....I worked in 5 sewing factorys and machine troubles are the biggest drawbacks there......They all break often .....Had a mechanic on duty at all of them.Doubt if it was good wages. Todays computerized machines require computer as well as sewing machine mechanics..
Now what I am getting at...The new machines today are so much more faster and easier to use, with out the computers even. That is why I dont get my old ones fixed. The best machine one can buy for efficiency , is the Industrial sewing machines. Straight sewing and Serger. I have seen them on here , for $1000......They are well worth the money if one is going to be at it alot........ The machines in the stores around arent industrial..
I'm not particularly talented. I spend far too much time ripping seams back out and swearing under my breath and wondering why I'm making yet another quilt. These quilts may look alright but only due to sheer force of will and not talent.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad that you all like them.
Landofoz............ I think all my quilts were Swear Quilts.... If only I had a real place to put a quilting frame I might try hand stitching like 2 inches apart stitiches...ha ha Like this. ============= =============== ================= Would go faster............ the thing nice thing about them ....We can use them and keep warm and laugh at our mistakes. I say who cares????
I didnt show the odd ball ones yet ......Not perfect by any means. Swear quilts, not square quilts......
